Weyerbacher Black Hole Ale

This hearty, chocolaty, dark brew is made with an intriguing amount of Blackstrap molasses added to the kettle.

2.6 12oz from bmartin08. Dark cola pour with minor mocha head. Nose of molasses. Taste is rather mild with a touch of sweet-fruit skunk ending quickly with a bit of bitter caramel.
3.5 12oz Bottle. Subtle salty roast aroma. Light chocolate. Pours a deep black, with a khaki rim above. Flavor is a subtle salty roast, backed with molasses residual tang. Some certain metallic character. Foamy. Mild flavored. Not as much intensity as I would have expected. Some nice light caramels and cream. Generally a decent porter with respectable flavor, decent body and cleanliness. Not as much bubble gum and residual sugar as I’m used to from Weyerbacher, thankfully. Quaffable.
3.2 Black color with very nice dark brown head. Very nice scent with lots of different tones in there. It was a little bit tart for a porter. Not sweet like some are, just kind of bitter.
2.7 Black with big head that dissipates quickly. Big aroma of molasses, soy, chocolate and espresso. Taste starts off innocently enough, with some bitter chocolate and significant soy. Finishes with too much metallic bitterness. Thin; this is too "extreme" to be a porter, but too weak to be an imperial stout. Does that make any sense? No? Good. Ugh.
3.6 Poured a very dark brown with a tan head. Aroma was mainly of chocolate and caramel. Flavor was also pretty sweet, mainly of chocolate, maybe some toffee and cappacino
3.7 Poured very dark, almost black, with a light tan head that retained well and left some lacing. Smell had a small amount of roastiness, semi-sweet, a bit of hops as well. Taste had some roastiness, noticeable, but not plentiful. There was some sweetness, lactose, and some bitter, hoppy flavors as well. Mouthfeel was on the lighter side of medium and carbonation was on the higher end. Good drinkability, I could probably stand to have a few of these, even at 7 percent.
3.7 Bottle courtesy tpd975. Pours a very dark clear brown with crimson highlights and a one finger tan head that fades to a ring and leaves some spotty lacing. Aroma of green hops, slight roast, molasses, and dark fruit. Taste is roasted malt, chocolate, green hops, spicy yeast, and molasses. Medium thin mouthfeel with a moderate amount of bitterness and smooth alcohol. Very good.
3.4 Bottled, pours dark brown, almost black ,with a tiny tan head. Aroma is a terrific mocha scent (little heavier on the coffee) and a tad bit of alcohol. Flavor is about the same, but not as strong as the aroma. It is really tingly and lively in the mouth early, but becomes fairly smooth as it warms. Pretty average overall, but nothing disappointing.
2.9 Transfering from tasting notes. Bottle. Dark brown pour with a small off white head. Smell of some chocolate and malt. Dry flavor of dark malt and some mild hops.
3.2 22oz from Carytown Wine and Beer (RIP). This is one of those brews that, in my opinion, gives Weyerbacher an inconsistent reputation. A fairly thick pour, oily and dark brown, with a faint tan head. Somewhat standard aroma of chocolate malts and roasts, but the taste was a bit dry and chalky, with very little of the molasses. Thin body and not a solid enough porter to begin with.
3.3 Bottle from Market Street Wine Shop Downtown. Pours dark brown with a small head and good lacing. Roasted malt, chocolate, whisky aroma. Thin and odd taste. Coffee and roasted malt with a grape-like sweetness. Interesting. 7/3/6/4/13
2.7 Ah, the other black hole...Weyerbacher. I received this in one of my first trades. This was before I wrote down who gave them to me, so I’m guessing it was john_adam2002, iowaherkeye, or eyedrinkale in March 2007. So this bottle is at least a year old since purchase. Pours black with little head, but still decently carbonated. Chocolatey and malty aroma. Taste is bland, maybe a hint of sour.
3.7 Pours a nice black with a dark head. Aroma is of roasted malt. Taste is complex and well balanced. Flavors of roasted malts, chocolate, slight coffee and some other earthy notes were in there. Nice Mouthfeel. Solid.
3.6 Black with red highlights beneath a frothy tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, dark chocolate, cigar, coffee. Taste is slightly sweet. Not bad at all. Another good one from Wyerbacher.
4.0 Bottle - from sampler pack. Black and opaque. Excellent! Very rich. Near perfect balance of malt, roatiness and hops.
3.7 22 oz bottle from 2007. Dark pour. Black with a dark brown head. Aroma is chocolate with notes of coffee. Flavor is rich, creamy. Flavors of chocolate, coffee.
3.6 Nice dark pour with a small head that dissipates to a thin lacing around my Rogue pint glass. The first aroma I got from this brew was chocolate and alcohol. The mouthfeel is medium-light, this brew is about dead on for mouthfeel of a porter. Medium carbonation. Flavors are chocolate, smoke, and coffee. Finishes dry with little alcohol flavor that was noticable in the aroma. Not a bad beer.
3.7 22 oz Bomber-pours black w/a moderate brown head. Deep earthy aroma. Flavors of chocolate, peat, smoke, coffee, molasis, & a little chocolate. Deep rich full flavor, very satisfying & solidly made Porter; perfect after dinner drink/nightcap. Nothing that will make you say "this is the best Porter ever made", but nothing that won’t make you want another one either. Long, smooth, smokey finish; alcohol is well hidden.
3.3 Oct. 2006 - Beautiful pour, dark brown nice head. Aroma was nice...sweet roasted malt and chocolate. Flavor, though, was somewhat disappointingly thin and overcarbonated. Bitter coffee, chocolate and roasted malt...typical porter with a large lactic acid flavor. Thin mouthfeel. Not memorable.
3.5 Pours dark brown, I was expecting a black hole of a a beer I really got a brown hole. I guess naming their beer brown hole would not help the cause. Thick tan head with honey comb esque lacing. Molasses and coffee on the nose with a similar flavor, over all this is a decent porter it just does not do much to set it aside from other porters.
3.1 Dark, cola-colored body with a filmy light tan head. Sweet coffee, milk chocolate, and coffee aromas. Chocolate, cocoa butter flavor with an over-caramelized, roasty edge. Notably sweet. Not really the type of pleasant, lingering porter that I can get into like an Anchor Porter or Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald. Maybe I’m just not a big fan of molasses.
3.7 22oz. bomber: This one pours a deep, dark brown color. It has a big, thick tan head that lingers for awhile. The nose is somewhat roasty with a bit of chocolate and a hint of coffee. The taste has a slightly lighter feel too it, while it still has a bit of a richness to it. Some coffee, chocolate, molasses to the taste. Also a hint of dryness to it. No sweetness to it at all. A decent porter.
3.7 Bomber. Poured a nice shade of deep reddish-brown with a creamy initial cap of deep tan head. The aroma picked up well-roasted dark chocolate first with a hefty dose of molasses right on its heels (proud of myself for picking that up before reading the description).. very good! The flavor had dry-roasted chocolate and molasses at the core with dry coffee ground bitterness and sticky molasses on the finish.. a little stale on the back with a bit of prickly overt alcohol.. but still very good. Medium-bodied and sticky at times on the palate.. a little too sharp on the back. Overall a very good porter.
3.9 I smell chocolate, coffee, nuts and hops. The color is dark brown. This is a thick stout. There is a creamy mouthfeel. The flavor is dark chocolate and coffee with some fruity notes. The alcohol is not too intense. It is thick, but easy to drink. Pretty good stuff
3.4 22oz bottle. Poured a dark, dark brown color with an averaged sized tan head. Aromas of roast, chocolate, and molasses. Tastes of roast, chocolate, and coffee. Thinner body.
3.1 12oz bottle, courtesy of my dad. Thanks! Pours a medium dark brown color; khaki head with good retention and a fair amount of foamy lacing left on the glass. Plenty of nougat and caramel and chewy chocolate in the aroma; no hop presence to speak of. A bit lifeless in the mouth: relaxed carbonation and a fair amount of roasted malts and dried fruits; watery isn’t exactly the right word, but this beer doesn’t seem filled out at the edges - just sort of an empty, freeze-dried coffee note throughout; shows a bit of acidity mid-palate. Lacking something, and certainly doesn’t have any hops present to efface an otherwise chalky, coffee and chocolate-like finish.
3.4 12 oz bottle. Pours a thick, deep brown - close to black. Smells strongly of coffee and malt. Fairly malty. Hints of bourbon.
2.6 Pours a dark brown body with a white head. Smells of chocolate and coffee. Taste is very much like the Old Heathen imperial stout , with less alcohol and hops. A decent drinking porter, but not unique in any way. Sampled at the Weyerbacher Brewery in South Easton, PA.
3.7 Very good porter. The best that I have had. Very intense, roasty, toasty malty and delicious.
3.2 Maybe this bottle is off? Not quite sure, I’ll rerate at some point. Dark brown with an average thin tan head. Subdued roast. A fruity tartness. A small chocolate. Light. A little fizzy. A bit thin. Tart?!?! A bit roasty up front. Acidic. A bit like cola. Fruity. Lingering roasty acidity. Relatively clean, but not to my liking. Maybe infected? Dunno.
