Weyerbacher Blithering Idiot

Weyerbacher Blithering Idiot

At Weyerbacher, we prefer to brew things true to European style guidelines, so our barley wine is definitely on the malty side, without being overly sweet. Notes of date or perhaps fig on the palate follow a pleasurably malty aroma to your taste buds. The finish is warm and fruity, and begs for the next sip.

3.5 Good beer....but slightly lacking for a barleywine. Thinking that some aging may help here. Alcohol is not hidden that well like some others in this style. Makes the mouthfeel a little heavy and harsh. Also a tad too sweet. Maybe more like a strong ale? Haven't had anything to rave about yet from this brewer.
3.6 Pours hazy mahogany with a one finger, light tan head. Aroma is caramel, dried fruit and light roast. Taste is plum and caramel, moving roast, buttery notes and light nuttiness. Finish is roast. A good barley wine.
3.9 Pours a hazy deep brown with a very thin tan head that eventually dissipates. Aeroma is smoky BBQ sauce and coffee. Taste is sweet, almost cloyingly so, smoky roasted malt, dried dark fruit, coffee and toffee, and a vinous character. Only a little bitterness after the swallow. ABV warmth kicks in as well. Very nice!
3.5 12 oz bottle. Pours a cloudy brown with no head. Big raisin smells. Tastes of dried fruit and alcohol. Very warming. Good example of a style I don’t particularly like.
1.9 8/7/18 Had with the gang on the roof after getting cheesesteaks. Deep brown with a thin head. Darker than I was expecting. Nose is lots of brown sugar and some piney notes. Taste follows with tons of sweet, funky molasses and soured hops. Way too much funk for my tastes. Thin but kinda heavy palate without much carbonation. Tough to drink for me. Overall, this is just not to my tastes at all. Huge dose of that - for lack of a better word - “rotten” sweet hop taste that I can’t stand. Maybe I’m just not a barleywine guy.
3.7 355ml bottle enjoyed through the second half of the world cup match between Span and Iran on TV. The bottle was bought at Vinmonopolet Sentrum, Tromsø. A rapidly diminishing beige head, no lacing, clear dark red-brownish body. Decent aromas of almond and a note of jam. Well blended taste of almond, bread, and dried fruits. Lingering ending with warmth from the alcohol. Full bodied. Nice slow sipper. (Tromsø 20.06.2018).
3.7 355 ml bottle, from Vinmonopolet Jørpeland. ABV is 11.1%. Clear reddish brown colour, head goes from minimal to none. Aroma of malts, caramel, dark dried fruits, some vinous and oaky notes. The flavour is medium sweet, with the same elements as the aroma, moderate hops.
3.3 DATE: May 13, 2018... OCCASION: Happy Mother's Day, indeed--a pleasant day will be capped by the beginning of the Cavs' fourth-straight Eastern Conference Finals... GLASSWARE: La Fin du Monde tulip... pours an intimidatingly dark ruby red body, teaming with bubbles that add to a slanted rim of white head... cranberry, fig, malty breadiness, some ethanol and turpentine that suggests abrasiveness, and a strong grape sweetness... a bit too much--brooding, thick--to call inviting... the draw is also thick, vinous, full-bodied, with a lingering sweetness... each sip brings a warming sensation... nutty fruitiness, fig, caramel apple, sugary esters, light chocolate, and earthy hops that evoke a dank mildew... not up to the drinkability of others in the style, nor is it the most flavorful... but it does move the needle with its warmth and dessert-like presence... a bit chewy too for a malt-forward representation...
3.7 Ravfarget klar uren Sterling skum. Lukter lett brent karamell, honning, røde bær og rosiner. Fyldig. Smaker brent karamell, vanilje, alkohol, svisker og trevirke. Middels lang
2.8 12floz bottle, BOD: 01.29.2018, BBD: 01.29.2023, ~$12/four-pack. Poured into a nonic glass where what little head develops then quickly dissolves to a faint ring atop a red-brown body. Maraschino cherries and caramel together create a smooth aroma, but flavor and feel is reminds me of cough syrup. Thick, and taste is caramel and metallic with touches of maraschino cherry as well. Perhaps I'm not a fan of traditional takes on the barleywine style, because this is second one in a row that has disappointed.
3.6 7 - 3 - 7 - 4 - 15 Pours a crystal clear, deep amber body with a very small, fizzy, very short-lived head. Sweet, malty and moderate aroma of caramel, rather sweet caramel. Also dark dried fruits, and chalk. In the back I find orange marmalade and apple. Quite strong flavour of sweet caramel, burnt sugar, alcohol, and dark dried fruits. A herbal background with some liquorice. Moderate sweet taste with a long-lasting, heavy bitter finish. Full body, smooth texture, soft carbonation. A good one, but not my favourite barley wine. [35.5 cl bottle, enjoyed 3 months after bottling, from Vinmonopolet Ullevål, Oslo]
3.1 Flaske 330ml fra Vinmonopolet Tromsø - Sentrum. Dyprød med et middels høyt skum som daler raskt med en kraftig bruselyd. Lett sherryaroma. Smaken mandler. Lett tørr alkoholisk ettersmak.
4.1 Pours hazy brown with minimal head, aroma of figs, lemon peel, some malt. Taste is dark fruits, sweet maltiness. Thick mouthfeel. long finish with sherry and figs.
3.7 31-01-18 // bottle at home. 2 1/2 years cellared. Murky brown. Nose reminds me of marsala. Taste of strong sweet malts with some raisin and fruits and sherrylike finish.
4.3 dark color, no head, high alcohol, big beer, big malty flavor, very good example of a smooth barleywine.
3.4 27.01.2018. 0,33l Bottle. Vinmonopolet Oasen. Dark brown colour with tan head. Rich malty flavours. Strong and very rich. Sweet with lots of alcohol. Notes of liqorice.
2.7 From Aug 2007 I got this one in a trade with Wasatch. Thanks again, John! It pours from 12oz bottle a cloudy orange-brown with a very small head of foam that shrinks to a few small islands near the center of the glass and there's no lacing to speak of. The smell is a strong dose of caramel malt and some hop bitterness. The taste has a good malty flavour...the caramel is big and in your face. I can taste some bittering in the background and it cuts the sweetness a bit but the malt sweetness is *still* king here and I can't deny that it isn't tasty. A few more sips in and I'm starting to notice the alcohol both in the taste and in the swallow. Very warming indeed. Maybe this is too fresh a bottle(no dates on label or bottle) and it needs some aging but whatever, I opened it and I'm going to finish it, even if it takes me all day. ;^) Oh and don't get me wrong, this is far from a drain pour, it's just not at the stage where I want a BWSA to be. Same thing happened with the most recent Bigfoot that I now have tucked away.. Bottom line: This one has potential to be a really good BWSA. From what I sampled, it's just a tad too "hot".
4.5 Sweet, highly alcoholic, sometimes too overbearing. Almost worth it.
3.6 Bruiser batleywine. Big malt sweetness with dark fruit and some Belgiany bubblegum aspect. Boozy burn. Does the trick.
3.7 Aroma is caramel, dark fruit, a hint of bubblegum. Taste is mostly caramel, some dried fruit notes, alcoholic warmth at the end. Good beer.
3.5 This barleywine is brewed in the European style, malty rather than hoppy. Very rich and caramely with Notes of dark fruits. very low carbonation. Seemed to mellow as it approached room temperature
3.7 Ladna barwa, taki ciemny bursztyn lub mocna herbata. Piana szybko znika. W smaku ciemne owoce, wyrazna slodycz karmelowa. Troche jak w Quardupel. W smaku gladkie, dobrze ulozone, oleiste, alkohol dobrze ukryty. Przyjemnie sie pije.
3.7 Hazy amber/cider color; Medium creamy body; Aroma of sweet malt, caramel, & rich fruit; Flavor of sweet malt, caramel/toffee, hops, dark fruit, and spice; Warm finish; Dangerously drinkable - I enjoyed it.
3.9 On tap @Brasserie 4:20 (Rome). Ramato intenso, lievemente torbido, schiuma bianco sporco medio-leggera. Al naso note di caramello, frutta secca, canditi, leggero vinoso, leggera ossidazione. In bocca è dolce, con finale amaro a bilanciare, anche una lieve nota di amaretti. Corpo pieno, carbonazione medio-leggera. Niente male davvero.
3.7 Tap at 4:20, Rome-Italy. Dark and cloudy amber with chestnut skin highlights, regular and tick off-white foam. Nose: dates, under spirit cherries, red fruit. Mouth: caramel, ripoedvred fruit, alcohol is quite there. Clean and rich on the cherry side.
3.8 Crystal clear copper color, fine bubbles creating a lasting, tall head. Very heavy body, well covered by lots of flavor, extreme heat but low carbonation, lingering palate with a candy finish. Intensely bittersweet, very well balanced not only by bitterness but for a sharp acidity snd alcohol. Hops and malt fight for predominance but neither wins, we do. Caramel, blood orange pith, herbal. Fulfills all expectations for an American barley wine.
4.0 Hazy dark brown pour with just a tan ring on top. Aroma tells me I’ll enjoy - cooked sugar, dark fruits, and a hint of booze. Flavor follow similarly but more intense all around, very sweet from start to aftertaste and boozy with some woodiness in the finish. A little less alcohol burn and more dark fruit flavors would have ramped this up considerably. Still a very solid offering for the style. I’ll have it again for sure.
4.1 Bottle, thanks Christina! Dark fruit aroma with notes of caramel and a bit of booze. Pours dark caramel colored with a nearly nonexistent off white head that has poor retention and lacing. Starts with sweet dark fruit flavors of dates, figs and raisins with a full body and luscious mouthfeel. Finishes very smooth with some caramel malt and a hint of booze. Really nice barleywine.
3.2 light malty aroma. red and clear in color with no head. taste is of darker caramel malts, some residual sweetness.
