Weyerbacher Fifteen

Weyerbacher Fifteen

This is a celebration of our fifteenth year making craft beer and it stands as an example of the bold flavorful beers that we have come to make. This is not a timid ale; it’s an intense, full-bodied smoke experience. Fifteen has a rich flavor profile balancing notes of dark roast, burnt toast, and spicy rye with a deep earthy aroma of smoke and wood. This beer should age nicely and be a smoky treasure for many years. Recipe by Chris Wilson, Head Brewer and Dan Hitchcock, Brewer.

3.8 On draft at Meridian Pint, DC. Vintage June 2101. Pours black with a thin tan head. Aroma of roasted malts. Flavors of chocolate, dark fruits, and toffee. Boozy bitter finish.
3.6 Bottle. Pours black with decent tan head. Aroma of smoke and coco. Taste is Smokey cigar and roasted barley
3.5 Has some chocolate, raisin, bit of soy sauce scents. Taste is similar to the scent, bit of smokiness, decent.
3.3 January 6, 2012 - with blankboy, garthicus, gregclow, jerc & mabel. 12oz bottle c/o j&m. Black pour with a smallish light brown frothy head. Smells like a nutty, somewhat boozy imperial stout (heavy roast, coffee, resin) - maybe a little soy sauce. Taste follows, but a little harsh and metallic. Light body, good carbonation, but the metallic harshness grabs and hangs on - too bad.
3.8 Bottle from Brusin’ Ales. Pours black and viscous with a quarter inch of brown foam that leaves a fair amount of lacing. Big sugar and smoke and bourbon and chocolate malt on the nose. Lots of sugar on the tongue with a bit of smokiness. This could use some more hops and some bitterness to balance everything out.
3.8 Tap. Dark tan head that's creamy, pretty much black color. Very ripe prunes, tobacco, licorice, roasty malts and some vanilla sweetness in the aroma. Flavor is less sweet, burnt toast, wood, vanilla, bitter chocolate and a roasty warming finish. Medium to heavier body that's viscous.
3.8 12 oz. bottle from michael-pollack- thanks again, Pollack! Pours an opaque brown with a small tan head that leaves a little lace in the glass. Aroma of smoke, roasted malts, chocolate, toasted sugar, and peat. Flavor of smoked and roasted malts, chocolate, dark fruits, molasses, nuts, and dark fruits. Medium-bodied, with a smooth, robust mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. Nice smoked stout.
4.0 Serving: 12 oz. bottle from Julio’s Liquors. It pours black with a thick, dark tan head. The nose has a little smoked meat, iodine, peat, coffee, and lots of roasted malt. The flavor is a little on the medicinal side. Lots of earth, peat, smoke, some burnt and ash notes, light sweetness, light fruit, and roasted malt. Needless to say, there is a lot going on with this brew. Oily texture with a full mouthfeel, lots of soft carbonation, and a long finish. The alcohol does a nice job of drying it out on the back end, giving a nice warming feeling. Overall a very solid brew. Seems to be holding up okay too.
4.1 It’s a hair of the dog kind of day, thanks a lot Matt ;) This one has been flying under the radar in my cellar, but today could not stay unseen, so we drink. Pours a solid color of darkness with a stingy tan head that quickly dissipates to a ring on top. The aroma as advertised is quite smokey, with bits of roast and chocolate rounding it out quite nicely. The taste is what you expect based on the aroma. You get a bit of chocolate caramel and roast up front then some heavy smokey phenolics come in and then fade. A bit of earthy bitterness with a hint of alcohol rear up for a second before a long lingering smoke and ash lay down a pretty heavy finish. Medium to thick body with a light level of carbonation and a thick sweet roasty chocolate syrup kind of mouthfeel. I really enjoyed this one, I wish I had popped this open a lot sooner, or squirreled some more of these away.
2.7 Very dark brown but w/o much head. The aroma has light smokiness, along with some lightly roasty, rich imperial stout malts. The body is a little viscous, but the taste is neither sugary nor particularly dry either. It’s a little flabby, actually. There is some light smokey character but unfortunately it odes not integrate well with the malts.
3.6 Pours dark brown with a beige head. Aroma is roasted malt, ash, chocolate, alcohol and light cardboard. Flavour is roasted malt, tobacco, ash, chocolate, alcohol and light cardboard.
4.2 Dark black pour with caramel color head that is thick. Aromas of smoke, wood and ash. Flavors of sweet malt, campfire smoke, and touch of molasses. Full bodied, slick. Overall, I really like smoke stouts, and this one is up there by not being too sweet, and letting the smoke dominate.
3.7 Small bottle. Black, small tan head. Aroma is rich and inviting, with lots of dark, woody elements, roasted nuts, and late booze. Lots of 90% dry gary chocolate in the flavors. Body has lots of juicy elements with a good deal of fruity acidity, very similar to foreign stout in the flavor profile. Just the right amount of heat. Not the most exciting, nuanced, or sophisticated beer but really enjoyable.
3.7 Bottle [12oz] shared with HogTownHarry, garthicus, GregClow, jerc & mabel -- c/o j&m. Jan. 6. Pours black with an average size lasting frothy tan head. Aroma of coffee, roasted malt, caramel and a hint of vanilla. Flavour of roasted malt, smoke, some coffee and light hops. Long bitter finish. Alcohol fairly well hidden. Medium bodied. Very good stuff.
3.7 Aroma- Roasty with some smoke/campfire smell. Appearance- Dark as night, not light coming through. Khaki head, but very little of it. Taste- Smoke right up front that lingers throughout. Definately getting some of the big roasted flavors i would expect. Bitterness toward the end. Smokiness mellows as you get farther into the glass, with more bitterness taking over. Do not taste the alcohol in it. Overall- My boss gave this to me because it was the last one in the store (and probably a year old). Very much like a rauch beer but a little more complex and not as overpowering. Not a bad drink, but should have waited to pair it with a food.
3.6 Pours a black beer with a beige/chocolate head. The aroma is malt, roasted, licorice, chocolate, smoke, alcohol and peat. The flavor follows the nose. The palate is sweetness and smoke. Overall a good beer.
3.4 [4244-20120106] 12floz bottle. Barbecued roast beef aroma. Black body with a long-lasting creamy light brown head. Smoky roast malt flavour has a long-lasting roasted aftertaste. Full body. Good, drinkable. (7/3+/7/3/14) 3.4~ (w/ blankboy, garthicus, GregClow, HogTownHarry, jerc) Overheard: "Check your brain at the door and enjoy the ride." -- referring to Crank
3.7 Bottle @ Odense Tasting, February 2012. Pours black with a small beige head and lacings. Dark malts, roast, honey and fruit. Smooth, sticky and soft. Sweet flavor with hints of smoke.
3.8 Bottle. Very dark brown body with a tiny head. Aroma is smokie notes, toffee, dark fruit, fruity notes. Flavor is toffee, liquorice, smoke, alcohol, roast, burned caramel. Thickling alcohol finish. Nice.
3.6 Black with a small tan head. Aroma of caramel, toffee and licorice, with a faint hint of raisin and smoke. Sweet roasted and bacon smoked malt flavour with a bit of wood complexity. Despite the sweetness and alcohol, it doesn’t feel heavy and sticky, and grows with each sip
4.1 Fifteen pours pitch black with a small tan head. Good lacing and retention. Right off the bat you know this beer isn’t messing around. Aroma of alcohol hits the nostrils first but is blended nicely with smokiness, wood, chocolate, coffee, and roastiness. Really a lot going on here but it has everything I enjoy about a nice big stout. Taste here is fantastic. The smokiness and wood come through more here. I’d say the smokiness is the biggest thing in the taste. Fills your mouth. But everything else catches up. Chocolate and coffee meld in nicely with the alcohol but don’t forgot this is a boozy son of a bitch. Smokiness lingers on the palette along with roasted malt character. Mouthfeel is on the heavy side. Coats the mouth nicely. Silky.
3.6 12oz bottle in Guinness pint glass. Pours very dark and opaque. Little carbonation makes a feeble attempt at a caramel colored head, giving up before even a full surface layer forms. it settles on a tiny ring around the edge. Aroma to me is like many other stouts, and my nose incorrectly implies to my brain an oatmeal stout. Mouthfeel is medium thick. Taste is pretty smooth given the ABV. As it warms up the aroma begins to betray a bit more alcohol. Taste is not as overly smokey as I’m led to believe, but it’s there. Mild alcohol in the aftertaste/throat. Nice one.
3.2 2012-01-06. Black with a nice foamy brown head. 4+ Modest aroma has an ashen smokey quality, muted chocolate undertones. 6+ Flavour is similar, sweet rich malt core with modest smokey undertones. 6+ Smooth medium to full bodied palate. 3+ Solid base beer but the smoke puts me off. Bottle from biegaman
3.9 12 ounce bottle. Pours a very nice jet black color with a small beige head. The aroma is sweet dark fruit and some light smoke. This is a rich brew with loads of Impy character, some roast and lots of dark fruit, caramel, light metal, smoke, but not a ton of smoke. Certainly I don’t see this as a Smoked beer but a Imperial Stout with some smoke. Very good. I’m digging this, some char and rich roast. Vanilla.
3.9 Thanks to Jerc & Mable. Appearance: pitch black, tiny brown head. Aroma: Super boozy, tons of chocolate, leather & coffee, bacon & smoke, tremendous !!! Flavour: smokey, bacon, chocolate, treacle and a long thick sticky finish.
3.6 Un nez très faible pour une impérial stout, même la fumée est discrète. En bouche c’est tout en rondeur mais les saveurs sont étrangement camouflés. Café au lait, fumé et mélasse mais rien ne veut dominer.
3.6 Date: June 28, 2010 Mode: Bottle Source: Crabapple Bottle Shop Appearance: black, wispy tan head, streaks of lace Aroma: dark chocolate aroma, nice smokeyness, touch of roasted Flavor: rich chocolate flavor, lots of roasted, well balanced and growing smoke, hint of fruit, long bitter finish Date: February 21, 2011 Mode: bottle Source: hop city picking up more of the fruity character to balance the smoke and bitter dark chocolate, Aroma: 7/10; Appearance: 7/10; Flavor: 7/10; Palate: 7/10; Overall: 14/20 Rating: 3.6/5.0 Drinkability: 6/10 Score: *** /4
3.9 Good beer. Pours a medium bodied black with light head. Aroma is nice earthy smoke and chocolate. Taste is roasted malts, a light peppery tingle, and a really nice amount of smoke that isnt overwhelming the base beer. Good stuff.
4.1 Bottle at last random beer tasting, this one is awesome, amazing smokey flavors, smokey like aecht but less bacon, huge body to back it up
3.8 Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a nice dark brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma consists of light smoke and dry roasted malt with light notes of black chocolate. Taste is also a nice mix between some notes of smoke though not as dominant as expected with some dry roasted malt and some subtle chocolate notes. Body is quite full with a somewhat of a creamy texture and good carbonation with no apparent alcohol. Very tasty though I bet this would have been better had it been fresher with more smoke presence.
