Weyerbacher Fourteen

Weyerbacher Fourteen

To honor 14 years of making craft beer we decided to brew a wheat wine. This unfiltered brew is made with over 50% wheat to give it a distinctly spicy character. Enjoy it now, or if you have the patience, give it some time in your cellar. When you are ready, expect to find notes of tart wheat and honey with crisp bitterness and carbonation. Recipe by Head Brewer Chris Wilson and Brewer Jeff Musselman.

3.6 Hazy apricot, plenty of particulates and a quickly fading odd-white head. Aroma of alcohol, wheat, light citrus, brown sugar, toffee and a touch of oak. Taste is big and malty with booze, wheat, caramel and brown sugar.
2.9 Bottle from Bruisin’ Ales. Plours brown with a thin khaki head. Lots of alcohol and dark fruiti on the nose and on the tongue. A bit of an alcohol burn on the finish. Meh!
3.2 Whole Foods, Vienna VA: For some reason there was a bottle or two of this left at the whole foods (I guess that shows how often they restock the beer selection). Pours an orange colour with a white head. Aroma is malt, booze, liquor, and some more sugary malt. Taste is very malty, but fortunately not exceedingly sweet. I suppose the wheat character makes this a little lighter than the barley wines, but it doesn’t make it any less boozy. In either case, I think this gave me a headache. I don’t know if it properly aged or not.
2.4 2nd June 2010 Light haze on this amber - gold beer. Little white bubbly head. Banana and cloves snout. Dry palate with very moderate carbonation. Dry spicy wheat, unsweet banana. Fair bit of alcohol aniseed. In your face and lacking any subtely.
2.8 Pours murky orange with a frothy, off-white head. No lacing, and the head recedes quite quickly. Aroma of alcohol, scotch, raisins, barley, lemon zest, and hints of pepper and corriander. Medium bodied with a rich, warming, alcoholic mouthfeel. Clean finish with a pretty strong burn. Overall, an interesting brew, but the alcohol is slightly too aggressive for the wheat foundation. Worth a taste if you can find a bottle.
3.6 Pour out of 12 oz bottle, thanks to Aaron for the pour! Dark brownish red with thin white head, aroma brought notes of dark chocolate, dark fruits, hints of caramel, biscuit, touch of slight yeast. Taste is some sweet dark fruits, biscuit, toffee, some slight honey and floral notes, touch of caramel, finishing fairly sweet.
3.7 Bottle @ Armin’s house. Thanks Baker! Reddish brown appearance with a light tan head. Sweet caramel, light banana, toffee aroma that strangely enough reminds me of a doppelbock. A little spicy, fairly light fruity, banana, pear, rich caramel, wheat malty flavor. This has held up pretty well.
3.7 Pours dark amber with a small beige head. Aroma is caramel, alcohol, raisin, plum and bread. Aroma is caramel, burning alcohol, raisin, rum and light orange.
3.9 Bottle @ Grand Cru in Rhineback... Poured amber/copper orange with an off-white head. Tons of floating yeast. Nose had lots of sweetness with very-like fruit eaters. Warming alcohol heat with, faint hops, caramel malt sweetness. Dense and conplex. Lots of dark fruit characters and booze.
3.8 Pours a clear and dark copper beer with an offwhite head. The aroma is malt, fruit, alcohol and wheat. The flavor follows the nose. The palate is sweetness with alcoholwarmth. Overall a good beer.
3.7 Bottle @ Odense Tasting, February 2012. Pours ruby amber with a small off white head. Sweet nose of overripe fruit, sweet malts and some clear signs of oxidation. Sweet flavor. Candy, port, fruit, alcohol and oxidation. Full bodied sipper.
3.5 Bottle. Muddy amber body with no head. Aroma is sweet fruit, banana, alcohol. Flavor is banana, alcohol, fruit, raisins, caramel.
3.3 Amber with a small white head. Aroma of bread crust, wheat, a faint hint of banana and a good amount of alcohol. Sweet fruity flavour with notable alcohol. A bit of oxidation is showing
3.4 L’acidité du blé combiné à la pomme donne l’impression d’un cidre. La présence en bouche l’arrière goût stérile font mal à cette bière.
3.7 Pours a ruby brown color with a thin off-white head that vanishes quickly. Aroma of plum raisin, dark cherry, and brandy. Sweet flavor of dark fruit with brandy, and wheat. Really nice sipping beer.
4.0 This beer pours a very dark orange color. My mistake was pouring the bottom of the bottle in with the rest of the glass, so all the unfiltered wheat is now floating in the glass. Nose is strong, sweet alcohol with caramel notes. Taste is very sweet with a slight bitterness on the back end. Lots of sweet fruit. Honestly, either I havent had a strong beer in a while or the alcohol taste is overpowering. 8 out of 10
3.6 Serious beer glows like a jack-o-lantern and goes dead after a lively pour. Can’t hold a head. Smells fruity like a real wine, but also a bit like freaking whiskey. Intensely bitter, but if one holds it on the palate for a time, the taste goes sweet and sour. Wheat evident cannot assert itself as a dominant element. Fruity alcohol punishes the palate and sticks around after finish. The kind of stuff that crosses the eyes as you drink it.
3.7 BGBB dinner @sierra first course. Hazy golden color, reminded me of a nice german hefe. Aromas centainly didn’t and niether did the smooth texture and palate. Comparing to smuttys wheatwine, this one is much more refined and flavorful. This does compare to the gamma ray however, but damn this might be the best wheatwine i’ve had.
2.5 A: The beer pours a hazy dark amber color with a finger of off-white head. S: Smells pretty boozy. There’s plenty of citrus aroma to it as well as some other fruit notes such as tropical fruits (pineapple comes to mind). Quite a bit of wheat and some brown sugar. T: Heavy on the booze as well as banana, grapefruit, and pineapple. Some wheat and bready malt, as well as brown sugar. A little bit of candied pears, too. M: Medium bodied with medium carbonation. O: Some decent flavors but just totally over the top boozy.
3.6 Bottle. Pours a clear amber color with a small off-white head. Has a fruity malty spicy dark fruit aroma. Fruity malty spicy yeasty dark fruit flavor. Has a fruity malty spicy dark fruit finish.
3.4 Deep dark cola coloured body with a nice thick tan head that lasts quite a while. Aroma of pit fruits, grapes, cognac, whiskey, oak and a bit of malt - plus tons of sweetness. Full-bodied; Potent at first with a lot of pit fruits, toasted malt, oak, cognac, scotch and a touch of nuts thrown in. Aftertaste is just as potent, perhaps a bit dry from the oak and bitter from the alcohol and malt, but a touch of sweetness remains after all. Overall, a decent barley wine, a touch strong around the edges, but the deep and complex flavours make for a long time to enjoy even a small bottle - plus, perfect small size. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Liquor Outlet in Boonton, New Jersey on 11-July-2010 (over a year old) sampled at home in Washington on 06-September-2011.
4.0 Bottle. Pours a clear cherry/ruby red color with a small light brown head. The aroma is apple juice, plum, and prune; lots of sweet, sugar-coated fruit, and brandy. The flavor is sweet plum, cherry, and toasted cocoa, moving to bitter grass and citrus with plenty of alcohol. The aftertaste is burnt sugar and toffee and plum. Moderately carbonated and full-bodied, this beer is creamy and still quite hot, with spreading alcohol warmth. It’s boozy, for sure, but also sweet and a touch brash. This is good stuff, I’m really enjoying it! [772]
3.3 Candy wheat wine first time trying this style sweet and not much for hops. Tastes a little produced and fake, dumbass
3.1 Bottle. Poured slightly hazy red/brown with small head. Huge yeasty/malty notes with smooth, dry finish.
2.9 Bottle, pours a dark brown, almost black colour, pretty harsh to drink, not a huge fan of what this was, tasted similar to other american strong ales I have tasted, it was interesing, not my favorite.
2.9 bought this one by accident so im not surprised i didnt like it. a little too sweet for me.
3.6 12oz bottle. Reddish color, white head. Aroma of sugar and alcohol, just like a Barley Wine should. A hint of raisin and bread in the nose. Flavor is dry and chalky, a good amount of golden raisin, sweet wheat malt syrup, citrusy hop oils, and a hint of apricot. Thick, heavy body. Burns a bit in the finish. Very heavy, strong, and full of fruit. 6,5,8,3,14
3.7 A lightly hazed mahogany amber ale with a thick frothy moka head. An interesting and herbaceous malt aroma, not typical, somewhat vinous, loads of treacle, orange peels, almost Belgian-like. In mouth, a sweet oily malt with loads of herbal hops, licorice, loads of fruity esters, alcohol warmth. Very nice.
3.3 12oz bottle. Rating #220. Dark copper pour with a thin white head. Sweet wheat aroma, alcohol and a sweet spice aroma, kind of strange actually. Big alcohol up front, sweet dark caramel and a light spice, very rich and warming. (1707)
2.3 341ml bottle from trade (thanks JB84). Pours a deep amber with decent tan head. Aroma is odd; smells a little like paint thinner, some spice, a touch of malt, but the acrid chemical assault is too much and a bad sign. Taste is certainly better than the aroma. Some caramel malt, raisins, treacle, but there’s also a really unwelcomed acidic bitterness. Hard to describe beyond saying this is burning hot in alcohol and just not pleasant. Finish is just too much burning alcohol. It’s been a while since I’ve had a beer so totally bombed out by the boozy burn of the alcohol. Can’t imagine this one will appreciate further with aging. Yikes!
