Weyerbacher Heresy

Weyerbacher Heresy

This is an incredibly intriguing ale is made by aging our Old Heathen Imperial Stout in oak barrels that were used for making fine Kentucky bourbon! The result is an extraordinary, dark, and mysterious stout whose very essence has been enhanced. The aroma is filled with vanilla, cocoa, and roasted coffee beans. This silky-smooth brew has notes of oak, whiskey, roasted barley and vanilla that meld together on the tongue to create an incredible sensation. Heresy is released in February.

3.8 Poured from a bottle. Not much head, but amazing lacing, indicative of an incredibly creamy consistency. Terrific aroma of coffee and bourbon. Smooth and rich as it goes down. Delicious beer.
3.9 Bottle. Pours black. Aroma and taste are bourbon, vanilla, roasted malts and coffee.
4.6 12 oz bottle from Giant Eagle in Pittsburgh. Hits you hard at first but soon mellows in on the palate. Tons of whiskey taste throughout. Comes on too sweet at times.
3.4 Deep clear almost-obsidian, just with some warmer touches. Good sized velvety brown head that lasts quite some time Nose starts kind of thin with sweet figs and char. Not much more. Sweet dark fruits dominate and then an alcohol wallop that tickles the throat long after it’s been swallowed. Sweet dark fruits and alcohol. I get no barrel outside of the alcohol itself. Maybe a faint hint of oak part way through but not much. Not bad per se if it were just a basic overly boozy stout (but still not GREAT [I’m not as big on the fruitier stouts like Anchor, preferring more roasty/char/etc. But thats just me]), but looking for a BA it leaves much to be desired.
3.8 Nice oaky scent in a deep black color. Light notes of tar and tobacco but vanilla shows through. Rich coating. Tap
3.8 Bottle: Dark brown with a tn ring head. Smooth aroma of bourbon and berries. Tangy notes with a sweet finish.
3.3 Darft at Pour Taproom in Asheville. Poured dark brown with decent tan head. Aroma was great, dark fruits, coffee, oak, vanilla, perhaps a bit of dark chocolate if you dive deep. A lot of oak in the taste along with, whiskey, coffee, raisin, sour.
4.0 Appearance: silky near-black pour, with a short, dark tan head. Aroma: strong dark bitter chocolate, vanilla, burnt molasses, light soy sauce, and a light undertone of whiskey and wood. Taste: sweet, with very dark chocolate, espresso, prominent vanilla and cream, burnt wood, brown bread, and bourbon. Finish: lingering sweetness, lightly syrupy, a low and smooth heat from the bourbon. Notes: Liked this a lot. Often these barrel-aged stouts are north ot 10% abv and kick your teeth in with the bourbon. This was light enough that the bottle was a savored pleasure, not a chore to finish the final sips. The well-restrained alcohol let the flavors shine. Bottle from Total Wine & More in Fairfax, Virgina (Pickett Center).
3.8 Nose is heat/whiskey, coffee grounds, faint cocoa. Flavor is same plus some red fruit, wet oak, touch of paper/oxidation, vanilla, chocolate more prominent than in aroma. solid especially for the price.
4.4 12 oz. bottle from Total Wine, Chesapeake, VA (bottled February 11, 2015). Dark brown, nearly black, pour with a short brown head. Great aroma of chocolate cake, vanilla, whiskey, and oak. Nice flavors of coffee and chocolate blended with vanilla, coconut, bourbon, and wood. Moderate alcohol warming. A great imperial stout!
3.6 Bottle, a few years old. Nose of chocolate, vanilla, coffee, oxidation. A bit light, minerally, somewhat thin but tasty.
3.5 Bottle. Thick pruney nose. Dark fruit flavors, blends and moves into a light boozy chocolate mid palate, and then it flattens out. All fairly mild, compared to what it should be. 3-4 years-old. Unfortunately, some oxidation has diminished the flavors
3.8 Black pour from 12oz bottle from trade, at home. Off white head. Aroma is a lite fruity and toasty. Tastes more like a sour than a stout to me. Grape, fruits, whiskey and a hint of cocoa. Really unique. Pleasantly drinkable
4.0 Pitch black color. Dark brown head. Huge bourbon nose with massive caramel, dark chocolate and oak nose. Slightly sour mouth with lots of caramel and dark chocolate. Slight umami finish.
3.5 bottle. black with one finger head. sweet with chocolate, light coffee and mild bourbon. i find a lot of bba stouts to be overdone -- this is definitely on the other side of things. good, but not great.
3.9 Deep oily black thin slick head that sticks to glass. Aromas of bourbon, dark chocolate, oak, vanilla. Very sweet on the palate, caramelized sugar almost milk stoutish. First beer by Weyerbacher, nicely done.
3.3 Pours black brown with almost effervescent head that dissipates quickly. Smells of chocolate and whiskey. Very sweet chocolate with cinnamon finish. Whisky prevails through thin mouth feel. Good sipper but not sure if want more than one. Almost too sweet. And carbonation throws it off. Want to age one for a year and see what happens
4.0 Bottle, black beer, walnut colored head fades. Aroma vanilla and oak, bourbon, molasses, dried plums, cherries, toasted barley and coffee. Taste is molasses, vanilla and oak, with a faint red wine like astringency, coffee, bourbon. Palate is rich and thick, carbonation subdued. This is a nice dry roasty BA stout, with all that goes with that, and it’s still easily drinkable. Excellent.
4.1 Aroma coffee, roasty, caramel, chocolate, alcohol, Appearance black, brown foam, minimal head, Taste chocolate, coffee, caramel, alcohol, whiskey Palate full body, thick feel, Overall not for a new to craft beer person but a really nice barrel aged stout that I would suggest to a friend.
3.9 Bottle from Bruisin’ Ales. Roasty bourbon caramel aroma. Similar taste. Sweet, dry finish. Good stuff.
3.0 12oz bottle. Pours black with a foamy tan head. Aroma is of malt, chocolate, wood, dark fruit, and vanilla. The first few sips were all wood. There is a lot of dark fruit and chocolate, with a nice malt base. You can definitely taste the alcohol. Mouthfeel is light and sticky. Body is definitely on the light side. It’s decent.
3.9 Pours an opaque black with two fingers of khaki head with decent lacing. Aroma of bourbon and sweet vanilla that mimic a bit of banana and a hint of umami and mild roast. Nice blend of roast, coffee, bourbon and mild vanilla with a bit of dark cherry and plum. Finishes semi dry with a bit of roast and alcohol warmth. Medium/full body with moderate/high carbonation. Very well blended flavors that are not over the top like many barrel aged stouts.
3.6 (On Tap) Jet black with slight white head. Little aroma. Smooth medium bodied with bright carbonation. Very pleasant taste - vanilla, oak, bourbon. Very pleasant beer.
4.1 Aroma of Roasted, chocolatey malt with oaky vanilla and bourbon in there. Taste is the same. Super smooth and balanced. Slight sweet up front with a bitter cocoa finish. Very full bodied. Vanilla bourbon flavors are pretty noticeable. So much flavor and so much balance. Maybe a slight boozy harshness, but it is slight. This is another great stout from weyerbacher. I have been very impressed with their stouts lately.
3.8 Black pour. Small tan head. Little lacing. Chocolate and coffee nose. Taste is chocolate coffee.
3.7 Bottle. The pour is black with little head. The aroma is nice, lots of chocolate and vanilla, not getting much from the barrel. The taste is full bodied, but a little thin for what I was expecting. Solid flavor profile, and some smokiness in the end which I attribute to the barrel.
4.0 Sweet oak and cocoa aroma. Nice barrel presence, with flavors of coffee, vanilla, bourbon, cocoa, toast and raisins. Hints of cherries and berries. The flavors were by no means mild, but also not as strong as expected. Body felt a bit thin for the style but still good.
3.4 Aroma of coffee and chocolate but subdued. Creamy feel full bodied with a taste of chocolate and cocoa. Mild palate of cocoa.
4.8 Aroma: chocolate, caramel, Appearance: black, clear, tan foam, Taste: medium sweetness, lightly bitter, Palate: full body, creamy, average carbonation, long finish,
3.8 Bottle into snifter glass, opaque deep dark brown color with thin dark tan head. Aroma notes of heavy roasted malt, smoke, whiskey, vanilla, cocoa, light coffee and some wood. Taste adds caramel, more wood, bourbon, dark fruits, char, some vinous notes, dark coffee and light licorice. Heavy-medium body, low carbonation, slick, oily with boozy roast finish. Nice solid barrel aged RIS, the price is quite nice too.
