Weyerbacher Merry Monks Ale

Weyerbacher Merry Monks Ale

Formerly Weyerbacher Belgian Triple. At Weyerbacher we've recreated a Belgian Trippel without limitation. We use premium Pilsener malts, candi-sugar, and yeast strains- all imported from Belgium. To be true to the style, our Trippel is bottle conditioned. This means we add a bit of candi-sugar and yeast just prior to bottling. This imparts a special effervescence to the beer, a creamier carbonation, and also extends the shelf life. The on-going fermentation inside the bottle will change the character of the beer as it ages, and you'll find it becomes dryer with age. You may want to lay down a few bottles for future evaluation. We suggest storing at cellar temperatures -around 55 degrees F- and away from light.

4.0 Poured from 12 oz bottle into tulip glass. A 2" white head drops slowly with plenty of lacing. Color is hazy orange, lots of streaming carbonation and yeast in suspension. Aroma is very yeasty with fruit and spice notes. Mouthfeel is medium and very similar to dry champagne. Flavors of banana, pear, spices, white bread, mild hops. Overall: nicely done tripel.
3.7 Aroma Banana coriander clove Belgian yeast hay golden malts yeast funk white grapes Riesling Taste sweet white grapes grapefruit Riesling white wine yeast funk Belgian yeast barnyard bread honeydew lemon zest banana coriander golden malts fruity esters rose hips wheat sweet candi sugar melon apricot
3.6 Bottled 355ml. -from Die Bierotheke Bamberg. Unclear honey golden coloured, minimal white head that lasts for not more than one second, some spices and alcohol in the nose. Moderate malty, yeasty, spicy, notes of caramel, fruits and alcohol with touch of oranges in the finish. Not bad at all but a bit over-carbonated.
3.3 10th Sep 18, 12oz bottle; BB 24th Apr 19. Bought at Bierothek, Bamberg and drank in my holiday apartment just down the road. I allowed the sediment to leave the bottle so my golden beer was cloudy, nice white head though. Malty and fairly sweet in nature, light fruity notes too. Boozy and interesting, liked it.
3.4 2018/07/18 - Pours a hazy gold colour with a soapy white head that quickly dissipates and leaves no lacing. Aroma is caramel and bready notes, yeast, bubblegum, banana, cloves, spices, floral notes and alcohol. Taste is plumbs, lots of candi sugar, yeasty-bready notes, bubblegum, banana, spices and alcohol. Mouthfeel is medium and silky with low carbonation and a sweet, spiced lightly boozy finish. Lots of great flavours but a touch overly sweet.
3.4 Pours clear dark golden with ruby tints and thin, fizzy white head that disappears quickly. Aroma is bananas, light clove and some Belgian yeast. Taste is plum and caramel, moving to banana and light roast. Finish is smooth malt. A decent Belgian.
1.1 Bottle form Village Beer Merchant. Unclear golden. Malty, esters, candied sugar, very sweet, cloying, artificial banana. Alcoholic. Very poor.
3.2 This just didn't do it for me. I am finding Weyerbacher to be sort of hit or miss. Appearance is a pale/cloudy yellow-gold color. There is a lot of flavor going on here, mostly sweet and tart. I am tasting wheat, caramel, citrus, plum, banana....all kinds of goodies. At first I thought overly-sweet, then the tartness kicked in, then back to the sweetness. Both ends were a little extreme for me, as in the end it was mostly sweet & tart fruits with tons of sugar. This beer had potential to be better, but was just a bit above average overall...I'd say below average for it's style.
4.0 2/24/18 With Abby while watching New Girl after she beat me 5-4 in speed. Poured from bottle. Deep orange with a fluffy white head. Label is okay looking. Nose is yeast and lots of banana. Maybe some pear. Smells great. Taste is super sweet. Fruity and spicy - almost bubble gum like. Yeast up front with cloves, banana, and pear as well. Palate is thick and sticky with a lingering sweetness. Basically no bitterness. Goes down easy for 9.3%. Overall, this is a nice sweet tripel. Easy drinking with lots of yeasty banana and spice. I would definitely have this again!
3.5 Surprised I've never rated this, Bottle from Harvest market. Deep yellow gold color without much of a head. Sweet bready malt candi sugar and light clove an bubble gum. Its a bit sweet for a tripel but it is pretty tasty.
2.0 Bottle from Total Wine. The monk on the label urging silence has been replaced by two monks carrying a barrel. Beer pours expectantly with great head that dissipates quickly. Aroma signals it's big on alcohol, but taste is a big disappointment. Cloying candi-sugar sweetness, in-your-face clove phenolics and harsh back-of-the palate bitterness doesn't bring the right balance to make it a worthy BelgianTrippel.
3.9 Currently enjoying my fourth bottle (on a fourth separate occasion! lol) from a six pack of this my wife picked up for me a few weeks ago, had not previously had a beer from Weyerbacher in years. This brew is true to style from start to finish, with notes of bubblegum and candy on the nose, but in a distinctly clean and fresh - rather than musty and rustic - way. The flavor features clove and other spices along with a soft fruity note of pear and green apple. Notes of banana also, as described. Dry - rather than syrupy - estery notes, with a mild warming booziness in the finish. Distinctly pear fruit aftertaste. Just an impressive rendition of the style, especially considering it is a relatively mass-produced brew. Well-executed, approachable, drinkable, this Belgian tripel is comparable to Victory's Golden Monkey, and subjectively at least I do prefer this. The smooth natural bottle-conditioned carbonation really is exquisite! Highly recommended!
3.5 Keg at Euston tap west. Pours clear golden, nose is caramel, sweet toffee, floral, light spice, taste is sweet, chewy caramel, floral, little varnish.
3.8 Bottle. Pour is somewhat unimpressive. Little head and no lacing. Aroma is impossible to review. Fruit? Golden kaluba? Hard to pinpoint. Alcohol is undetectable. A slight sourness in the beginning. Gumball penny arcade. That candy coating attacked by a sour sweet tart? Then some flatness. I had a big question mark over my skullcap as I drank it. The lack of alcohol was prominent as it was strong. But there was some warming up in the olfactory. Flirting with genius. Almost....there.
2.7 Earlier Rating: 7/26/2015 Total Score: 3.7 Date: July 26, 2015... Glassware: Affligem chalice... Occasion: recovering from Shan’s 20th LVR reunion while dealing with the (un)usual water in the basement--this time, a loose flexpipe in the air conditioner... Appearance: soft, hazy, orange amber body; swift, fizzy off-white head thins to a strong ring; .... Aroma: tangerine, candied sugars and some fruity esters--but subtlety of smell suggests this one could be monkish, quiet but powerful ... Palate: soft, lightly textured and vibrant on the tongue, with a fizziness that promises life; creaminess is apparent; aftertaste is brief and rounded... Taste: tart, puckerish and flavorful--grapefruit, apple, spiced alcohol and wine-like grapes--the profile is agreeable but not overwhelming for a tripel; .... Overall: I should note that this is a bottle consumed a few months after bottling; the alcohol is well packaged within a reasonably flavorful ale; the strength is in its softness, but the profile is not as diverse or enjoyable as others are..
4.3 Drank from the bottle. Great triple. Fantastic high ABV beer. Would absolutely purchase and drink again.
3.7 Draft to snifter at Cappy’s pour avg gold with thin white head. Nose sweet malt, Belgian ester, bubble gum, banana. Taste sweeter flavors, fruits, esters, and some balancing malt.
3.3 From tap. Pours clear gold with two fingers of fluffy white head. Nice Belgian yeast nose, lightly funky fruit. Flavors are banana, clove spice, yeast. Medium bodied with ample carbonation, medium length finish. Holds the alcohol well for 9%
2.7 Not sure what’s going on with this Tripel, but there’s a strong medicinal sweetness soaking through all other aspects of the pint, combining with the sugar to give it a banana Ny-Quil flavor I’m not enjoying too much. Not a dealbreaker; the normal grassy, sunny notes mix with mild green apple for a pleasant brightness, and the finish is somewhat dry. But the banana weirdness makes it a bit hard to get through.
4.0 May be the best tripel i’ve ever had.amazingly sessionable for such a big beer.great balance of malt and hops.being from the easton pa area i have been on their brewery tour and have tried almost every release, and merry monks is the best..its too bad their other beers are so foul and most of the guys employed there are such pompus arrogant snobs.
4.3 This beer is smooth as fuu. Pours golden and very cloudy. Has a very soft, creamy, and pillowy palate, with a sweet taste of apricot. The 9.3% is completely hidden- not even a hint of alcohol. Have seen it in the store and was slightly creeped out by the weird monk shushing me (NO YOU SHUSH) but ordered it in the bar and it was my favorite of the four of the night. Gonna have to ignore the creepy susher and pick up one of these next time I see it!!
3.3 Along with Yves at home philip golden blond colored body with a small white head with a spicy fruity yeast hops aroma a spicy fruity sweet yeast hops taste with an alcholic bitter finish
3.0 Shared with wim at phil’s place. Clear goldblond colored beer with no head no carbonation floks of yeast visible. Spicy yeasty aroma. Full sparkling palate. Finish is yeasty spicy.
4.0 12 oz. bottle. Poured a slightly hazy straw/gold with a 1/2" white bubbly head. Mild Belgian yeast aroma with scents of bubblegum, banana and clove. Sweet flavor with all of the above present. Mild flavor of some apple and pear. Medium bodied with a mild alcohol burn. Very nice.
3.7 Pours a deep golden amber. Frothy white head leaps from the pour. The nose slightly biscuity malt is notable, but then comes clove and maybe pepper. Taste is a nice balance of malt, some plum, date, clove, and banana. Mouthfeel is medium with medium/high carbonation. Overall, this is quite good.
3.5 Over carbonated. Sweet with some banana flavors but more fruity from Belgian Esther's not bad overall.
3.8 Got home tired from work and poured a bottle into a Sam Smith’s pint glass and... it was gone before I hardly noticed it. Easy drinking and to my surprise on pulling up RateBeer it is a 9.3% alcohol brew. Frankly, I didn’t even notice what this looked like in the glass, but it had a small and rapidly vanishing head after a vigorous pour. Good yeasty tripel aroma, redolent of fruit and mild spices. Pleasant sweet flavor, carbonation up front, medium body, definitely worth another try when I’m more alert.
2.2 The alcohol is too up front. Try to avoid this one as it usually means instant headache. Have heard the same from two other serious beer drinkers.
3.5 Thanks to my Vermont friends for this one, Canada Thanksgiving 2016. Hazy golden colour with fizzy-bubbly head, short retention and minimal lacing. Nice aromas of pears, Belgian Ale yeast and other sweetness. Hints of vanilla and candy notes. Fruity taste with the yeast. Alcohol is well-hidden.
