Weyerbacher Muse

Weyerbacher Muse

Our latest creation, MUSE, is a Farmhouse Ale with a distinctive Weyerbacher signature. Farmhouse Ales, by tradition, were used as restoratives for workers during the warmer months under the hot midday sun. Typically made with barley, sometimes wheat and oats as well, a Farmhouse Ale could be light golden to amber in color, but always with a dry, slightly tart finish, thus being a great thirst quencher.

Weyerbacher MUSE is light amber in color, brewed with barley and a healthy dose of raw wheat and raw oats as per tradition, to give it a mouthfeel that’s both silky and light at the same time. The wheat and oats add a bit of cloudiness to the beer as well, so don’t be afraid, sometimes cloudy is good! A very special Belgian yeast strain was used to ferment this particular brew, and it was done at downright “hot” temperatures, 78 F, in order for the yeast to develop its spicy profile that is expected for a Farmhouse Ale. No spices were added to this brew, its all from the yeast.

MUSE is hopped with Styrian Goldings for bitter, and Saaz for aroma, both just adding even more to the dryness of the brew. Putting it all together, you have a slightly spicy palate, with pleasant aromas and very dry, mildly bitter finish. At 6.2%, you’ll want another one so you can ponder this intriguing taste profile, and you may find yourself wondering why you haven’t explored Farmhouse Ales before!

2.8 750 ml bottle. Light amber pour with light foam head-sprite carbonation. Yeast and stale dry coriander gives an odd spicy palate feel. Bread and grassy sums this up for me.
3.4 Bottle served in a shaker glass. Pours hazy gold with an inch of pillowy head. Had notes of honey, white wine, and floral. Medium carbonation. Decent but not your typical saison.
3.3 A- Translucent Golden yellow. Some haze but not as much as I would expect. Thin white head that fades. Surprisingly it leaves a good amount of lacing in the glass. S- Some yeast-but mostly an acidic smell. T- Initial taste is bland. Some yeast and very little citrus. Aftertaste is quite acidic with a burn of alcohol (surprising for the ABV). A hint of yeast remains on the palate-the only thing saving this brew. P- above average. High carbonation and good yeasty character to the body. O- Its drinkable. I’d drink more if I had more than one bottle but its not something Im going to venture to buy again. I liked Yard’s Saison much better. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 06-07-2007 20:49:45
3.0 Bottle. Pours a golden body with a white head. Herbal body with hints of spruce, earth some light evergreen, and a bit of grass. Cracker and bread y toned with a light apple ish finish. A sub par saison.
3.3 pours a hay yellow with small bubbly white head. aroma is funky barn yard, earthy, yeast, bread and hay. drinks crisp with light fruits, hay, yeast, horse blanket, barnyard.
2.9 Looks kinda like ginger ale...lawn grass scent, fruity dry taste...not excited......great label though
3.3 22oz bomber. Pours very cloudy goldish-tan with a medium-thin head that disappears into *nothing* (not even little patches of bubbles on top - looks almost like fresh-pressed apple cider). The aroma is grassy and earthy from hops with a subtle touch of acidity and Belgian ester funk. The flavor starts dry with a light bready malt character and a strong ester-fruitiness and grassy hoppiness. At mid-palate, tasty yeasty esters combine with balancing earthy hop flavor and bitterness. Finishes dry with a light grainy malt character, interesting Belgian fermentation character (fruity, spicy, light acidity), and soft bitterness. The mouthfeel is brisk and highly-bubbled (despite its cidery appearance) with a medium body. Overall, not very pretty, but interesting with a refreshing complexity and drinkability, and very Belgian. Not bad at all.
3.9 Pours gold with a white ead. Smells of flowers, hay, dry malt. Tastes dry and lightly perfumy and spicy with a grasy finish. Enjoyable.
3.3 cloudy light amber with nice head. mellow nose... fruity/cherry, grassy, spicy notes. taste more noticeable... more cherry fruityness, spicyness, grassy/earthy flavors.
3.3 Bottle [22oz] shared with HogTownHarry & garthicus -- c/o HogTownHarry. Pours a nice looking, slightly hazy, golden-orange with a long-lasting frothy off-white head. Pleasant aroma is yeasty, spicy & fruity along with biscuity malt. Flavour’s not as good as the aroma, but still fine: Sweet with yeast, biscuity malt, some alcohol and spices. The finish is a bit iffy and slightly harsh. Average bodied. A good Saison, not great, but I’d drink it again.
3.4 Draft at Rattle N Hum. Pours a nice gold with a fluffy head. Nose is pretty standard, light plums & peaches, a touch of lemon. Pretty one dimensional. Taste is a little grainy, estery with banana & coriander. Light lemon on the finish, dry. Light, watery body. Okay.
1.2 A mix of Cu (copper), wit, cloves and hay taste with a harsh finish. .
3.2 On tap at a fabulous place for microbrews, Mad Mex in State College PA. I am really starting to enjoy beers of the saison style. This one was flat in appearance (no head), gold, a bit hazy. Had wheat character, wild, sour palate, some bananas, lots of cloves, very nice body with sticky aftertaste.
2.6 I have greatly enjoyed all the Weyerbacher beers I’ve had until this one. This beer was drinkable, but really boring. There just wasn’t really anything notable about it. It poured a light orange color with a medium amount of head. Aroma was a little grassy, but pretty faint. Flavor was a touch cardboard-like, a bit cereal-y, and not at all funky nor even really remotely interesting. The cardboardiness may have been due to age, but I bought this bottle at Jungle Jim’s, who has a pretty brisk-moving beer section (there was no date code). Pretty bland and only mildly offensive. It wasn’t awful, but I can’t come up with a reason to recommend this beer, so I won’t. I picked up a bottle of this at Jungle Jim’s in the Cincinnati area.
2.9 22 oz bomber. Cloudy light brown pour with a big off white head. Aroma of dirty pennies, hay and malt. Taste of malt, faint spices and light fruit. Pretty weak for a saison, nothing really sticks out.
3.2 Light farmhouse without brett. Fruit, maybe apricot. Little malt in the background that hides the saison taste.
2.6 Poured a pale golden kinda hazy with a little white head very sweet and you definitely taste the belgian yeast citrusy, candy like with a spice taste at the end not a big fan was a little too sweet not much of an aroma either
2.4 cloudy orange with some foam. nose is odd for a saison, caremel some fruit and a weird spice that i think might be pepper, odd flavor to match
2.7 Pours a slightly hazy copper color with a fluffy off white head. Aroma is coriander, honey, orange, herbal, and some spicy notes. Flavor is coriander, herbal, some wheat, honey, some orange, and bitter spicy finish.
3.4 Bottle(22oz). Shared with blankboy and garthicus. Cloudy deep orange, large fizzy off-white head. Spicy, slightly sweet and fruity aroma.... Taste - same, a little too syrupy-sweet - maybe cardboardy. Thick lively mouthfeel, nice carbonation, spicy finish. Surprisingly good - a bit boozy is a lasting impression.
3.2 Shared by HogTownHarry with Blankboy and I. Appearance: Lovely cloudy orange with some visible carbonation, small off white head. Aroma: Pepper and yeast, some sweetness, earthy with some malt. Flavour: Nice and sweet with a mild body, some bitterness, barley, dust and mild dust in the finish.
2.4 This was a disappointing one, especially from a brewery I normally enjoy more than most here. Little taste to make this like a saison, came across more as a malty xpa.
3.5 bomber from a Village Beer Merchant in Buffalo. pours hazy orange with a huge white head. laces up my tulip real nice. dry dusty aroma with some decomposing pale malt. peachy flavours upfront with a long dry peppery finish. a decent saison but my guess is this bottle was old and IMO i think that age has helped this brew. id buy it again.
2.9 22oz bottle. ahh nice...been awhile since i’ve had a saison. muse pours a cloudy gold with a small white head. sourish, lemony aroma. flavors of sour lemon with honey. maybe some tea leaves. hint of peppery spice. hmm.
3.0 After a horrible night of studying I am ready for bed. I hope this S.O.B. puts me to sleep! Ah, so this 4 a.m. beer session better prove itself worthy. Anyways, 22 oz. from Greens on Ponce De Leon. Didn’t cost as much as any of the other Weyerbacher’s. Wow, thankfully, the head isn’t a huge issue. It actually fades away rather quickly and I didn’t even tilt the glass to facilitate that. Darker color for a saison; has an orange/caramel color. Nice looking saison if you ask me. The head isn’t a pain in the ass, and the beer looks nice, but nothing spectacular. Smells like it is going to have a bit of a sour taste to it, but there is that tart yeast-like aroma that hits the nose. Not overly pungent, but very subtle aroma that dances on my nose, and then leaves quickly. Slightly fruity and sweet aroma, but not extremely pungent. Decent aroma. Oh ya. lemon. Kind of a sweet candy lemon flavor. For having a lemon/yeast like flavor it is not very tart. Not a very smooth saison. I feel that the flavor is just flat i.e. it quickly develops and then leaves nothing but a subtle sweet yeast taste. Overall, the beer has a decent aroma, and a short-lived taste. The beer is almost borderline bland, and doesn’t carry much of a palate. Ok brew.
1.8 Horrible, taste of fish and mayonnaise. The strong palate doesn’t help either the nasty flavor just keeps coming. I would wish this on anyone. Bottle at Lucky Liquors in Miami
3.0 From a bottle poured a hazy straw color with a fair amount of head. Nice sweet spicy flavor with a lingering aftertaste.
2.5 Too much lemon, overbearing. Lacking in complimentary flavor. Overly simplistic, disappointing performance from Weyerbacher
4.0 Draft - Weyerbacher (Fresh Batch). Gold, creamy white head. Spicy fruit-like aromas warm to hints of peppered bread. Earthy fruit cream flavors balance on nutty wheat and pepper-like tones. Medium bodied, medium carbonation , light fruity finish. Always passed this up due to the low scores, but now will seek this batch out for those summer grilling days and nights. Refreshing and summery...
3.4 A hazy amber ale with a thick off white head. A pleasant rising bread aroma, yeast, light vanilla and cream, herbal notes. In mouth, light farmhouse ale with gin alcohol, grainy notes. Tasted April 25 2009.
