3.4 Roasty and earthy with some peppery splashes and pronounced raspberries. Basically Old Heathen with some raspberry notes.
3.5 Roasted chocolate aroma. Flavor is distinctly fruity raspberry but faint and subtle. Sort of like an expensive chocolate truffle with just a hint of the fruit. Leaves a long lasting sweet and fruity flavor. I think the fruit gimmick is at the expense of the overall beer though. Not a very exciting impy on its own.
3.3 12 oz bottle courtesy of, I’m fairly sure, TheEpeeist. Chris is the man. Pours a nice ruby over midnight, opaque blackish pour with some red around the edges. A sizable but carbonation driven coca-cola brown head that stays at a small layer overall, laces some. Aromas are of raspberry filled chocolates, a bit sweet with fruity syrup, a touch tart and pulpy, with dark chocolate, light coffee, some decent roasted malts that are covered over by the fruity nature of the brew. Not bad, different. Initial is lighter bodied for the style, a bit bland in body with creamy chocolate and roasted malts, light coffee, pretty potent bitterness from hops or the fruit on the backend. The fruit plays less of a role in the beer’s sweetness, instead providing some tartness and and bitterness on the backend, with a touch of berry pulp sweetness buried in. As far as flavor intensity goes, this beer falls by the wayside. A bit bland for it’s size and style, this beer doesn’t do it for me. Thin, but the finish is it’s strength. Not bad, but not a great example of the style.
3.5 1/27/08 12oz fresh bottle from vwcraig. This one was much better than the sample I had a couple months back. The mouthfeel is not as thin as the old one. No vinegar in the smell and the raspberries are subtle. 10/31/07 12 oz bottle from VWCraig. I was looking forward to this as I heard it is retired. The first sniff from the bottle is raspberries and chocolate. the first sniff from the snifter is vinegar and old raspberries, not good. The taste was mostly raspberries and the mouthfeel was astonishingly thin. This was nowhere near an imperial stout in my opinion and it was a chore to drink. First Weyerbacher beer I was unimpressed with and hopefully it will be the last. A:4 S:3 T:3 M:2 D:2.5 Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 10-31-2007 14:44:04
3.8 Typical roasty imperial stout aroma with the vaguest hint of sweet fruit. Drank it straight from the bottle so not too much to report as far as color and head are concerned. Smooth mouthfeel with flavors of dark malts and after-bite of hops. You can taste something a little different about it but I didn’t really place it as raspberry until the beer warmed up a little. Has a bit of a sweet aftertaste but not overdone. Not a bad beer.
4.2 12oz bottle thanks to Adrian. Big time want list beer for me so was glad to get it. Pours a super dark mahogany. Red highlights. Small tan head. Woody nose with some chocolate malt. Not much in the nose. The flavor makes up. Rich woody and smooth up front. A bit of alcohol on the backend and a massive dose of chocolate covered raspberries. Fantastic desert beer. This is underated.
3.9 Bottle at home ... thanks to space coyote ...Deep red ... thin tan head ... rich woody roast malts ... little raspberry nose ... soft smooth roast malts ... little coffee ... fruit but no real raspberry ... saying that its takes its time ... but eventually a little tart raspberry does show up... all round decent though.
4.1 12 oz bottle served in a clear pint glass. Poured black, which looked ruby when held to light, with a medium amount of thick dark head. Nose is raspberries, coffee, molasses, roasted malts, alcohol, and dark chocolate. Taste much the same with a tart raspberry that lingers into the finish, along with the roasted malts. I wasn’t sure what to expect in this one, but everything blends together quite nice for a wonderful treat.
3.6 Pours black with reddish brown highlights and a 1 finger creamy, light brown, head that has decent retention. Aroma is roast, char, raspberry muffins, some roast, a little coffee and cocoa. Flavor is coffee, chocolate, raspberry, smoke, twiggy earthiness, some mild roast, a little caramel and pepper. Palate is medium body a little syrupy and neutral on entry, with a dry slightly slick finish. Pretty good overall, I struggled to find much complexity in it, but it was tasty.
4.2 12 oz bottle. Pours a dark brown colour with a quickly disappearing tan head with a nice lacing. Has an aroma of alcohol, raspberries, dark fruit, coffee, chocolate and malts. Flavour of roasted malts, coffee, dark chocolate with a hint of raspberry. Has a vinous presence. Good one.
3.7 Nose of raspberries, roast, and dark chocolate. Pours black with a thin bubbly head and some sediment in the bottom of the glass. Flavors of roasted malts, dark chocolate, and raspberries mixed together. A touch of tartness in the finish from the raspberry. Some roast lingers on the palate and dries it out a bit. I liked the mix of fruit and imperial stout in this one. Drank rather nicely. Now I am looking forward to trying the 2001 vintage I have.
2.7 Raspberry and coffee don’t mix. Poured black with a tan head. Aroma of raspberry and coffee. Coffee and raspberry flavors fight over supremecy. Hate it.
3.8 {March 22, 2009] Bottle. Pours near black with some rich red tints in the body and no real head forming. The aroma is roasted and chocolatey with the raspberries held in check. There is just enough there to make an impact. The body is reasonably dense. Dark chocolate, raspberries, and a slightly sour twang are in the flavor. The use of raspberries is very tasteful in this one and it keeps everything juicy. This is a good example of how to use fruits in an imperial stout. *cough* *cough*
4.0 Thanks to ClockworkOrange for sending this one out to me Bottle poured into my snifter produced a finger worth of tan head that settled to a thin case. The body was a typical stout black no light comes through this at all. I love the smell on this brew, chocolate covered raspberries. How can you go wrong? The flavor is like the nose in a lot of ways but with a coffee twist so it keeps the raspberry sweetness in check. The only complaint is it needed to be a bit thicker in the mouth. I enjoyed this brew while kicking back to night. I grab it again if I found it or saw it on tap
3.2 Bottle 355 ml Appearance: murky dark brown ale with smallish contrasting crown. Nose: blend of alcohol, raspberry and chocolate. Rich and vinous. Flavor/Palate : Medium bodied. Woody, brown malts with darker roast backing. Raspberry with alcoholic burn on top. Proper yet cant step up to higher level.
3.8 bottle poured into a snifter has a black color and a frothy light brown head. aroma has real fresh raspberry, sweet malt, and chocolate. sorta like a raspberry chocolate cordial. flavor has a nice malted chocolate stout with sweet pureed raspberry. the stout itself is average but the fruit is authentic and interesting not syrupy. this is a little light to be considered an imperial but it does mellow on the taste buds after a few sips and settles in well. a desert type beer.
3.8 I liked this a lot. Pours a black with a red hue. Aroma is very much like chocolate raspberries. Sweet and enticing. Flavor is more what I would call a weak stout than imperial stout, it is not big and bold at all, and kind of thin. However, it mixes perfectly with the raspberries. Chocolate, raspberries, candied sugar, and molasses all mix together. I enjoyed it.
3.5 Thanks to Bobby for sharing this one. It was either a 2001 or 2002 bottle. Man, how does this thing still have so much carbonation? The head was practically out of control! More like an ice cream float than I was anticipating. Fairly smooth and chocolatey stout, just a hint of tartness and mostly sweet. The body is thin, but my expectations were exceeded.
3.6 Thanks kp for sharing. 2002. Pours a dark black that allows a profuse creamy tan head. The nose is fruity, shows raspberry, crisp tartness, base stout has survived fairly well. Flavor is tart and fruity, some chocolate comes through, raspberries contribute a crispness it feels like.
3.8 Bottle thanks to MrChopin. Black pour with small tan head. Tastes of raspberry with some tartness in the finish. Roasted malt and chocolate present as well. Enjoyed this one.
3.0 2000 Bottle shared by eclectic at Eric’s place. Pours a pure black color with a thin brown head. The aroma is really sweet berries, some alcohol also. The taste was decent; some sweet berries, light roasted flavors, a very thin body and some medium malts. The flavor seemed a bit off, perhaps aging has not gone well, maybe some oxidation. Not bad though. Thanks Kevin.
3.9 This is a very good and tasty beer. It is definitely thick and chewy. It has a good mixture of chocolate and raspberries, yet it is not too sweet. My brother hated it but I like it. I have had better, but overall I would certainly drink this again. It hits hard but is definitely full of flavor. A good meal in a bottle!
3.1 Bottle in trade from Pnista. Thanks man. Pours a dark black color with short lived tan head. Smell is chocolatey malt and raspberries and some oxidation, but still nice. Taste is a bit ashy with lots of raspberry flavor and a dark maltiness with some chocolate. Medium body and carbonation. Overall, flavor was too oxidized at this point and didnt impress too much.
3.7 12oz bottle thanks to Johnykat. Pours black with a brown head. Smell is of raspberries and chocolate. Taste is of chocolate and raspberries. This tastes good, but is not complex enough. Mouthfeel was a bit disappointing in that it was medium-to-thin and not as thick as most imperial stouts.
3.8 Moderate robust malt aroma. Black color with a small brown head. Mild sweet malt beginning developing a balanced sweet raspberry finish.
3.4 Bottle shared by Crosling. Poured a deep brown/black color with a thin beige head that quickly diminished to a ring. Aroma of strong raspberry, chocolate, roasted malts, and some light smoke. Sweet, lightly tart entry with some light raspberry leads into a moderate roasted maltiness with some sweet raspberry and a bit of coffee and a lightly chalky finish and undertones of raspberry. Low carbonation, smooth on the palate. Pretty solid.
3.9 Bottle thanks to Dakine. Nearly black pour with one-finger tan head. Nose of roasted barley and a bit of chocolate as well as raspberries. A little overly roasty on the nose, hitting a bit weird with the raspberries at first, but tasting much better as the beer warms. Even better on the palate, with some hops showing up as well; quite tasty.
3.5 Poured dark brown with a thin, quickly dissipating tan head. Smells like raspberry mousse, tastes like raspberry mousse with slight hints of plum, coffee and caramel. I was pleasantly surprised by both the smoothness and the nolt-so-bad application of fruit flavor.
3.9 Bottle, and sadly... the last one. Raspberry leaps up at you along with earthy chocolate and a faint hint of alcohol. Small 1 inch head when poured into a pint glass, which vanishes fairly quickly, but contrasts against the midnight black body. Tastes of coffee, with hints of smoke, and has a soft but lingering finish tasting a bit of toffee.
3.9 12oz bottle. Pours dark brown almost black with a 3 finger tan head. Tons of raspberry, dark cherry, cocoa, and coffee on the nose. Flavor was very coffee like and lots of dark fruit flavors, very underrated in my opinion.
