Weyerbacher Seventeen

Weyerbacher Seventeen

Seventeen is a Saison Ale brewed with pink peppercorns, orange zest, lemon zest, and grapefruit zest. Brewed to the classic “Weyerbacher anniversary requirement” of a strength of 10% abv or more, Seventeen weighs in at a style-obliterating 10.5% abv. Seventeen releases subtle notes of fruit, berry and pepper upon pouring. You’ll notice a balanced sweetness with a touch of citrus and spice with a dry and peppery finish.

Seventeen is a once-and-done release only and will not be here for long! This style of beer should age very, very well. Be sure to get some before it’s gone!

3.6 Bottle cheers to Leighton. Golden pour with a big white head. Looks great. Nose is full of herbal hops, lemon curd, leafy greenery, grass, yeast, lemon morange and light funk. Taste has loads of lemon curd, lemon tart, pepper and spice, grassy hops. Alcohol shows itself with quite a bit of warmth although isn’t too bad for the abv. Spices right on the back end. Solid stuff
3.5 A: Hazy Golden Straw/Orangish Hue, Passes Some Light, White Head Ring, No Lacing S: Oranges, Corrainder T: Oranges, Grapefruit, Corriander M: Mediocre Carbonation, Light to Medium Bodied, Mildly Sweet, Mildly Bitter Overall, for a saison, it was poorly carbonated and just a boring nose and flavor...very disappointed for an anniversary beer.
3.7 Bottle shared at Bruce’s in London - this one I got at New Beer Distributors in NYC. Pours mostly clear gold with a frothy white head. Aroma holds doughy white bread, lemon meringue, hints of straw. Medium sweet flavor with lots of pale bread, herbs, yeast, semi-dry citrus. Medium to full bodied with fine carbonation. Warming finish with further yeasty, doughy pale malts, subtle spices, hay. Strong but pretty tasty overall.
3.5 Golden, mildly hazy body; delicate white bubbles dirty my glass. Smell of sweet malt, tons of Brett, spicy, lemon peel. Actually smells like it will be sour. Pink peppercorns, floral, funky, some sweetness in the middle. A bit boozy on the finish. Add more fruit and let this sour a bit and I'd drink the shit out of this.
3.3 It’ll get ya drunk. Hazy yellow orange. Aroma is musty and light fruit. Taste is sweet and bitter. Over-rated, but descent.
3.5 12 ounce bottle. Thanks Brenton! Pours a somewhat hazy golden orange with a small white head. Aroma of fruit, yeast, and spice. Taste is lemon, yeast, cloves, pepper, and malt. Nice.
3.3 Hazy golden colored pour. Slim layer of white bubbles. Some lacing. Aroma reminiscent of an infected beer. Some citrus notes. Taste is a sweet citrusy malt. Slight bitterness. Tastes way better than the aroma.
3.5 12 oz. bottle. Hazy orange color, with a thin off-white head. The aroma is orange slices, white bread, strong sugar, overripe bananas, and syrup. The flavor is stickily sweet, with some very light bitterness. Light to medium body, very sticky, and sugary. Overall, this is a big, sticky saison.
3.9 Delicious! Rich and flavorful, with copius fruit and spice notes. Just bitter enough. Very small head.
2.9 Bottle: The aroma consists of moderate-heavy orange, moderate peppercorns, light bubblegum, lemon, grapefruit, and alcohol. It pours a hazy, bordering on cloudy, yellowish-orange with a small white head that quickly fades to a thin ring. There’s some minimal thin webbing left on the sides of the glass. The flavor starts with moderate citrus with a touch of bubblegum. Alcohol is very noticeable in the finish in flavor and heat. It’s way too much for me in this style of beer. There’s also some light peppercorn, apple, and grapefruit. It’s medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Overall, just way too much alcohol and it’s not working in this "imperial" Saison.
3.1 Burnt citrus peels and yeast funk fill the nose. Probably the strongest beer of this type I have had. Hazy orange, pretty obvious that it’s aged a year. Mean sour-puss bitterness, which is the only thing hiding the strength, as there’s very little malt. No, just lots of citrus booze. I also can’t imagine it doing well with long term aging. Not really heavy but filling. Even the clean hitter strikes out sometimes.
3.4 A little sticky on the palate. Definitely sweet, but not too bad. Tastes fruity but cannot nail down which fruity. Really tastes like a Belgian triple with abut too much candied sugar. Good but not great.
3.5 Pours an orange yellow with a slight white head. Aroma of Belgian yeast and some citrus. Some white lacing down the glass. Oily feel but nothing special.
4.1 Fabulous spicy sweet flavor. This is excellent. I just saw it was retired and am now disappointed.
3.9 12oz bottle, from Jungle Jim’s in Eastgate. Hazy yellow orange color. Yeast chunks in the bottom. Thin white head. Couple dots and ropes of lace. Very nice zesty, citrusy flavor, light spice. Some baked banana bread. Love the taste, assertive, light bitter, lot of zest, pleasant amount of alcohol twang, and the perfect level of sweet. Bigger body. Light, kind of crisp carbonation. Surprisingly easy to sip. Awesome, bold saison. Drinking great at the moment
3.3 Traded bottle floating around the cellar (had no idea this had so relatively few ratings or I would have rated it earlier). Pours a hazy gold color with a bubbly white head. Lighter than expected aroma of fruit and yeast. Wow, the flavor something akin to an imperial saison. Flavorful but a little too booze forward for me.
3.4 Pours a medium honey in color with chunks of yeast and other particles floating around. Aromas of lemon/orange peel, coriander, and slight pepper. Flavors step it up from aromas with lemon/orange peel upfront, hay, slight alcohol in the back, and a slight faint hint of pepper. Medium bitter all the way to finish. Slight sour note. Light to medium sweet. Expected more with this one. The alcohol is well subdued in flavors as you can only faintly notice it.
2.9 August 2012. Bottle. Pours straw yellow with a short while head. Aromas of citrus, grass, yeast and spice. While there are some saison style elements in the beer, the high alcohol is a bit over the top for this kind of beer. Guess you don’t know till you try.
2.9 Indiscriminate spice and fruit flavor, citrus dominant with a hint of hops, doesn’t quite come together. Not bad, but not too good either.
2.6 12oz bottle. Not a great effort. Some funk on the nose with citrus. Taste is citrus, cloves, and a shit ton of booze. Far too boozy for a delicate style like this. It just kills the flavors that appear to be there.
3.5 Bottle to snifter (shared with the Mrs.; thanks hopdog). Looks good for the style; a cloudy orange with thin white lacing. Smells solid; Belgian yeast, citrus, hops, and pepper. Tastes like it smells with a nice, smooth mouthfeel (especially for the abv). Solid beer.
3.0 Bottle. Pours a hazy yellow. Nose of citrus, sweet, fruity, a hint of spice. Taste of sweet fruit and a bit of spice. Has a nice malt balance. Pretty good. Surprised this was a saison.
3.1 12oz. bottle, cellar aged for 1 year. Fruity, sweet and floral aroma, spicy and sugary with notes of melon, pineapple, banana, honey and citrus, some faint clove and dried flowers in the background as well. Lightly hazy light-medium golden in color, very carefully poured off of any sediment (which was because it was quite a lot) to keep it as clear as possible in the glass, and managing a very fine, uneven, white head and fine lacing to match. Flavor profile is richly sweet, fruity, spicy, estery and malty with a hint of warming alcohol appearing at the finish, showing more tropical fruit, clove, and faint pepper towards the end. Mouthfeel is thick, heavy and full on the palate, slightly creamy with a low degree of effervescence, body is also substantial. Certainly a liberal and high-gravity take on the style.
3.3 Hazy yellow beer with a short white head. Aroma is heavily spiced with pepper, lots of orange and lemon peel and some yeast. Taste is very full of spice...too much so,. Lots of pepper and lots of booze. Not a really great balance for me, but interesting none the less.
3.4 Bottle (12 oz). Thanks John! Unclear straw/golden with a small diminishing white head and no lacing. Aroma is of orange peel, lemon, peppercorn, alcohol, yeast and slight fruits. Taste is moderately sweet with a strong alcohol and spices presence, orange peel, malt, lemon and yeast. Spicy finish. Heavy body. Dry and hot. Too much alcohol and spices for my liking (maybe a tad overdone) but still a good beer. Not so drinkable for a Saison though.
3.9 Bottled. Poured clear, lighter straw golden with a short, uniform white head. The aroma picked up a hefty dose of orange peel and peppercorn with honey behind.. some lavender and black pepper accents.. big, but quite well done. The flavor found sweet, strong honey at the core with citrus zest, peppercorns, and meaty floral notes laced throughout.. tangy citrus and peppery notes on the long, slightly-syrupy, belly-warming finish. Heavier-bodied with low-moderate carbonation on the palate.. bordering on heavy-handed, but I enjoyed the way it came together.
2.2 Bottle. Cloudy golden with small head. I’ve had really good luck with Weyerbacher, but this is way overdone. Boozy and over spiced.
2.6 Bottle. Hazy orange pour with minimal head that fades quickly. Nose has lemon, banana, and yeast. Dear lord, finish is a muddled candy mess. This is no saison in my book. Improved slightly after sitting a bit, but no thx.
4.2 Amazing lemon yellow pour with hazy yeasty’s floating amist. Head is white and is only present under a heavy pour. Taste is grassy, wheaty, orange corriander spice ginger and lemon Zest. Palate lingers on anise malts probably from use of maris(?). Excellent taste alcohol is well hidden. Shame its my last one.
