Weyerbacher Sixteen

Weyerbacher Sixteen

Caramel, crystal, munich and chocolate malts form a rich foundation for this dark and complex ale. Brewed with an absurd amount of honey from Pennsylvania bees, this braggot has a profound honey character and a nice warming finish. It is the perfect beer to celebrate our sweet sixteen.

3.2 Backlog bottle thanks to so many good ratebeerians. The look is clear, thin tan head, and brown in color. The smell is caramel, sweet, fruits, and honey. The taste is sweet, alcohol, honey, and eh.
2.2 Thanks Clint. Dark brown with a solid sheet of peanut foam. Smells like honey (as the label says), and profoundly so; there are some nougat and raisin notes in the nose as well. There are some nice things going on with the malt here, some graham (again, in the nose). Tastes sweet and...makes my face twitch. Whew, way too sweet with nasty acetone and alcohol flavors. The raisins in the nose come thru here with a fury, and with brown sugar and granola. I really don’t dig this profile. Thin with heavy carb. Semi dry finish. This beer is substantially more disappointing than I had expected. I really am hit and miss with Weyerbacher, but this is not appropriate for my mouth. Serving type: bottle 12-31-2011
3.8 12 oz. bottle. Pours deep dark brown almost black with a sudsy frothy khaki head that dissipates to a thin soapy film and lingering lacing. Aroma is rich roasted malt some licorice coming through and underlying coffee/cocoa scents. Not really any noticeable honey scents. Taste has more anise/licorice flavors with honey roasted malt slight smokiness and hidden coffee peanut brittle some chocolate/toffee. Palate is full slightly sticky good carbonation and a warming dry finish. As this warms the honey really shows well along with some spice and alcohol. Pretty tasty!
4.0 A: Deep Mahogany Hue, Passes Almost No Light, Mild Off White Head, Some Lacing S: Raisins, Plums, Honey T: Raisins, Honey, Sweet Bread M: Decent Carbonation, Medium to Heavy Bodied, Sweet, Mildly Dry Overall, a solid Braggot Ale that tastes very similar to a sweet quad, good beer.
3.6 Pours a caramel brown color. Aroma of caramel, raisins and alcohol. Alcohol dominates the taste with sweetness from the honey.
3.7 Not sure I realized this was mead until I went to rate this. I assumed it was American Strong Ale. Pours deep dark brown with a light tan head. Scent is molasses and booze. Medium heavy body with more carbonation than I expected. Flavors starts out sweet and stays sweet. Draft - Brick Store Pub - Decatur, GA
3.2 Rated in April 2012 (Backlog) - Brown in color with a small off-white head. Aroma is of honey and malt. Taste is of honey, booze and malt.
3.0 On tap at the Brick Store Sweet Sixteen Party. Dark pour, with next to no head. The aroma is sour cherries, molasses, black bread, and strong honeysuckle. The flavor is very sweet, with a little sour note in the finish. The body is medium, silky, and very acidic. Overall, this is a strange, sour, but tasty beer.
3.3 Chilled 12 oz. bottle poured into a snifter. Pours light brown. Aroma is sweet dark fruit. Taste is dark fruit, honey, and molasses. Is this a dark strong Belgian ale or mead.
3.4 Bottle from a local trade. My first mead rating on this site. Strong malt character that has complexity
3.3 Bottle..nose is honey,caramel,sweet, dark fruit..Taste.is honey,fig,caramel,honey..
4.2 This has been cellaring the for some time now. Lots of honey and alcohol notes on the aroma. First tastes are of malt, deep complex malt, honey, barley sugar, chocolate, toffee, caramel, and raisin. The sweetness of the honey lingers and takes for a nice little journey. A little bit of a warming alcohol on the tongue adds to a creamy, chewy mouthfeel. Love this ale. Great beer overall.
3.6 Smell-malty caramel honey Taste-chocolate malty with great honey taste. Tastes like candy. Has the mead aftertaste.
3.4 The carbonation generates a minor lace in my glass. The aroma is pleasant with notes of honey, slight chocolate, sweet dark malts, and alcohol. The flavor is very good. There is a nice balance between the predominant malts and honey. The combination creates a sweet wine like taste with a minor dryness in the finish. Overall this is an enjoyable beverage.
4.3 2013.01.10 - Weyerbacher Sixteen (2011 Anniversary beer) - 12 oz bottle in Pint glass. This is one of my favorite beers. I've drank several cases worth and still have about 6 cases left. Yet I've never reviewed it. Seems fitting tonight as Weyerbacher posted that tonight at the Stirling Hotel in NJ that bourbon barrel Sixteen is on tap, and I would really like to be there. Pours a semi opaque deep mahogany sort of color with reddish highlights where the light penetrates the edges. Almost as if a darker beer has been watered down a bit. Very little carbonation or head, it settles to a ring around the edges of the glass almost immediately. Aroma is sweetness, and it's obvious it isn't candy sugar or otherwise, it's complex honey sweetness. Very similar aroma to Brother Adam's Bragget Honey Ale as I recall. Taste is kind of benign on front end, very mild bitter bite and then the sweetness seems to ramp up and increase toward the back end. Mild alcohol warmth in the throat and a bit in gums, etc. As it tapers off it kind of settles almost to a cough syrupy sort of trailer. Mouthfeel is medium body, mildly creamy, no carbonation. It's not a perfect beer or perfect taste but I really really enjoy it, and have gone to the trouble of having a few cases shipped to me once I cleaned out my local bottle shops. It goes down dangerously smooth and fast for 10.5abv. This beer made me aware that I really enjoy braggots. Aroma 8/10, Appearance 4/5, Taste 9/10, Palate 4/5, Overall 18/20
3.4 Serving: 12 oz. bottle from State Line Liquors. It pours a cola like color with a frothy tan head. The nose smells a little papery with notes of dark honey. The flavor is very sweet with strong dark honey notes, a little sherry, and spiced dried fruit lurking in the back. It borders on overwhelming to me, but then I have a hard time with most meads. Still the finish peaks and then quickly ebbs into a lingering light honey finish. Interesting and I’m glad I tried it, but not one I would go back to.
3.6 12oz bottle: Pours a clear deep mahogany with a few strands of off-white bubbles. Has a sweet honey and caramel nose with a hint of cherries. Starts with pretty good fullness, light carbonation and toasted malts with plenty of sweet honey graham cracker notes and a touch of brown sugar before a slightly drier, mildly warming finish. Pretty true to style and drinkable.
2.8 On tap at the bocktown monaca. Halarious, they pour this like a draft in a big tall glass for $5! Heeheh, this mead is quite intoxicating, such a headknocker. Looks like coffee in the glass with no head nor visible co2. Yes, honey smell abounds. Quite friendly on the olfactory for a’beer’ heheh. poured a s beer this stuff is quite strong, wew. Comes across like port wine, no shit. Asa mead, it is not quite on style yet it still kicks your ass. Got a 12 oz glass for $5, no way. Kick my ass. Barely any co2. Did I say it is an ass kicker? wew. I am so used to small glasses of mead since it is quite winelike that getting a buig mug of this is off the scale. Certainly wine. Kick you in the head.
3.8 Bottle. Poured a deep, dark, but clear burgundy when held to the light. Looks dark nearly-black in the glass. Smells of licorice, raspberry, honey. Has a sweet dark-fruit taste in it, similar to plum, maybe some cherry. Despite all the fruit notes it’s not really fruit-tasting.
2.8 Bottle. Pours light amber with decent white head. Aroma of sweet honey and lemon. Taste is thin and sweet
3.7 Draft at barcade Brooklyn. Pours a deep brownish body with no light passing through. Tight off white/brown lacing. Aroma is musky cherry, basement, honey and light wood. Mouthfeel is lightly creamy - medium to light with notes of honey, light alcohol, musky earthiness, dust and light fruit.
3.0 Has some dark fruit and honey scents. Dark red/brown color with no head, taste is sweet and some funky wood like taste.
4.0 A: Pours a viscous/syrupy deep brown color out of the tap. Cream color head, minimal retention S: Definitely a massive dose of alcohol right off the bat, but I was kind of expecting that. Lots of honey, caramel, fruit? Very interesting, I don’t have much experience with the style T: This is a big beer. Lots of alcohol blends with honey, caramel, and a big sweetness. Pretty complex and many flavors are unique to my palate. MF/O: Big syrupy and velvety body, smooth and low carbonation, big honey sweetness finish.
3.7 Bottle shared by jayhawk73. Thanks Jeff! The beer appears dark brown, with crimson highlights. The beer has approximately 1/4" of light, tan head that leaves a fair amount of lacing on the glass. The aroma brings an abundance of delicious honey, sweet malt, spice, and spice. The flavor offers sweet honey, malt, and spice, respectively. A really nice braggot. I could definitely drink a ton of this and walk around Renn Fest, pretending to be a knight. Alcohol is prevalent, but not overpowering. I would certainly have this again. 3.7 Delicious and wonderful, a distinct bubblegum flavor it present in this year’s anniversary ale.
3.7 Bottle from DiarmaidBHK - 2011 edition - pours a dark brown with little head. Aroma is brown sugar and malt. Taste is sweet, with some heat from the alcohol as it warms. Overall, a nice beer to sip after a late night at work.
3.2 Bottle... Cloudy burnt caramel braggot with a small, creamy, off-white head. The aroma is a blend of honey, caramel, fruit, vanilla and a trace of methanol. Full-bodied and silky with zippy carbonation. The flavor provides loads of sweet caramel flanked by light bitterness. Pretty good balance overall. Finishes bittersweet and tongue-numbing.
4.1 12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled in mid 2011. Pours hazy very dark reddish brown color with a nice 2 finger dense khaki head with very good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Some light foamy spotty lacing clings to the glass. Aromas of big raisin, prune, honey, molasses, toast, herbal, cherry, caramel, earth, roast, clove, and peppery spiciness. Very nice and complex aroma with great balance. Taste of raisin, cherry, prune, honey, molasses, toast, caramel, herbal, biscuit, earth, clove, roast, and peppery spices. Earthy spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark fruit, honey, toast, herbal, molasses, earth, clove, and peppery spiciness on the finish for a good bit. Great balance and complexity of flavors; and quite a bit on the intense side as well. No cloying sweetness at all. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a fairly creamy, slick, and slightly thick mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is well hidden with only a warming after the finish noticed. It was a bit hot and intense at first sip, but slowly sipping brings out a nice array of complex flavors. Overall this is an excellent braggot. Very complex and balanced flavor profile; and a nice one to sip on. Really enjoyed this one.
3.5 dark amber pour with a cream head. nose is honey, sweet, malts, and rich toffee. nice on the palate, honey, malts, not much different from the nose.
3.7 Delivered as discribed and I was pleasantly treated to a nice break from what I tend to drink. will buy this well crafted mead again.
