Sunday Morning Stout, a barrel aged stout from brewmaster Chris Wilson and his team at Weyerbacher. Aptly named too, as SMS is a stout aged in bourbon barrels with coffee. The best part of waking up.

4.3Date: June 10, 2018... OCCASION: a whirlwind trip from Michael's semi-finals victory in Sussex to Will's victory in Forks, and now a slow approach to Final Exam week... GLASSWARE: Sunday Morning Stout mug...immediately sizzles with prolonged fanfare, before its dark brown head caves into itself and disappears like magic... the mug is now basically a black coffee stunt double... powerful, thick coffee bean challenges the nostrils, with a briny saltiness, light vanilla extract, hoppy earthiness, and of course, the promise of sweet bourbon... the first sip is dry, swift, and warming--a wake-up, a salvo that I perhaps should not have started this at 9:33 in the evening... finishes sweetly, with a fierce warmth that screams its three fiery entities... full-bodied, forcing each sip as a contemplation... with plans to work tonight, this is working too... Jeff finds this more compelling than KBS, and since I haven't had that yet, i will say demure.... wow, this accomplishes its triuum goal... all this, and it buzzes without bloating or smashing its drinker.... complex and agreeable.... thank God Weyerbacher is within an hour's drive...
4.012oz bottle, into a tulip glass. Pours inky blackish brown with medium dense mocha head. Aroma is rich dark chocolate and oaky barrels with a light whiskey notes. Taste is along the same lines - thick dark chocolate malt, big fresh ground coffee flavor, rich creamy body, charred oaky notes on the finish. Not world class, but this is excellent and totally worth seeking out.
4.4One of the best coffee flavored beers I have had. A perfect mixture of coffee and chocolate deliver a well balanced smooth beer. Low carbonation. The alcohol is very well hidden. This is as good as it gets. Enjoy!
3.9On tap at Gillys in Rockville, MD.
Opaque, black-brown with a thin tan head and fair lacing.
Aroma of roasted coffee, chocolate, dark fruit and a touch of molasses.
Taste of roasted coffee, chocolate, bourbon and dark toast.
Full/medium body and medium carbonation.
4.412 oz bottle from Tavour. Nose is vanilla, light bourbon, roast coffee, and chocolate. Black with a medium, lightly lacing, cinnamon tan head. Flavor is lightly sweet, light bourbon, and coffee with vanilla creamer. Nice, my kind of beer!.
4.1Excellent beer and 12.7%. Not overly strong. Smooth coffee and bourbon notes
3.9Pours thick black with small, dark beige head. Aroma is coffee, boubon and light roast. Taste is dark chocolate and toffee, warming to coffee, vanilla and roast. Finish is strong bourbon. A very good coffee stout.
3.52018 bottle from Craft Brewed. Pours a pitch black with a finger of brown head that lingers. Big roasted coffee/espresso-forward nose with booze, dark fruit and cacao nib aromas. Good body, boozy roasted malt, more prune and cacao. Quite roasty & bitter for my liking. Lots of warming alcohol bite on the finish.
4.0Pours black with a brown head. Aroma of bourbon, chocolate and coffee. Taste is coffee, bourbon and grains/.
4.4I poured it from bottle into a glass. It pours a thick black with a brown head. The aroma is chocolate, coffee, bourbon, and leather. The taste is chocolate, bourbon, coffee, toast, and oak. It's got an oily thickness with some nice carbonation. As it warms, there's definitely a whiskey burn. This is excellent.
4.1Blacknwith a dark head. Slick, thick body. Roasted malt, coffee, sweet malt, earth, bourbon, a bit of oak. Good stuff.
4.1This is a big beer and it doesnt hide its strength. Clear cola color, no head or lacing. Port notes throughout, dried fruit.
4.0Pours from bottle black with no head. Nose is some coffee and booze. And, the taste is heavy on the coffee, very boozy, with a chewy mouthfeel. This is excellent.
4.1Pours an syrupy inky dark brown with near zero head.......aroma of fresh coffee, dark chocolate......taste is Booze, coffee, bitter, low carbonation, finishing bitter and slightly sweet and quite a full body.
3.7From notes, tasted at Great American Beer Festival 2017. Will add more notes if I get to try this again. Great stout!
3.8Draft, may have been at Seven Monks. Deep opaque brown-black body, thin light brown head. Inky body, lots of burnt sugars, roast, and vinous notes, with ample bourbon and oak. Tannic and boozy; rich but not syrupy. Nice!
4.2It's hard to find a problem with this beer, though it's definitely not the best in class. For a widely available, inexpensive take on the KBS style which has dominated beer for going on 8 years, it's more than acceptable.
3.8Poured from bottle dated 2/13/17 oily black pour with minimal head and nice lacing. Aroma is coffee dark chocolate fudge alcohol and roasted malt. Taste is fudgy roasted coffee and brownie batter. Nice beer.
3.7On tap. Dark opaque black with a thin quickly disappearing mocha head. Espresso, dark chocolate, oak, vanilla, booze, smoother then I expected given the booze but it does come bite you at the end with a long sweet finish, full bodied and mild+ carbonation.
3.712 oz bottle pours a dark black color with a tan head. Aromas of coffee, chocolate, roasted malt, and spice. Full bodied, complex, delicious.
3.8Bottle. Heavy malt aromas of toasted and burnt, light herbs for the hops and earth for the yeast, with tar and licorice in the background. Head is average sized, creamy, tan, with good lacing and good legs, and is mostly lasting. Color is very dark brown. Flavor starts moderately sweet and lightly to moderately acidic, then finishes moderately sweet and heavily bitter. Palate is full, creamy, with a lively carbonation and a harshly alcoholic finish. Powerful Imperial Stout with lots of dark aromas and flavors. But a Morning Stout? Maybe a little to boozy for that.
4.0Draft at Brass Rail near Hershey. Black color. Aroma is huge coffee, roast malt, vanilla. Taste is smooth whiskey Bourbon oak with big warming alcohol. A sipper. Slight cocoa. Big body. Nice. Very nice.
4.0Pours solid black. Aroma is vanilla with some Smokey backbone. Taste is roasted coffee vanilla and cocoa. Masks the abv
3.6Strong alcohol and robust malt aims. Black color with not much for a head. Moderate sweet beginning that gets somer in the finish and develops a good amount of bitterness. Thick palate.
3.9Sampled at GABF 2017 in Denver, CO. Numerical rating only - did not take detailed notes.
5.0Bourbon, bitter coffee, and a sweet finish. This is one of my favorite beers and I wish I could get it locally.
3.9Butelkowane 01/11/16 (BB 01/11/18). Poranna niedzielna kawa i ja to kupuje. Czekolada na drugim miejscu. Rozgrzewajace. Jakby mi ktos powiedzial, ze warzone z papryczkami - uwierzylbym. Bourbon jest tylko dodatkiem, absolutnie sie nie pcha przed szereg. Alkohol dobrze ulozony po ponad roku w piwniczce. Kawal dobrego piwa.
3.9341ml bottle, gift from trade. Thanks Hugo S. Aroma: whiskey, rye, alcohol, lots of coffee, chocolate, vanilla. App: dark black, minimal brown head, no retention, no lacing. Taste and palate: some chocolate in mouth. full body, medium high sweetness, moderate carbonation, light acidity finish that helps to manage all this big sweetness. Overall: good stuff. Enjoyed the aroma quite a lot, even though would have thought this was avec in whiskey casks rather than bourbon. Also glad there is a good acidity base making this beer feel less sweet than it really is. A great "shelf" beer.
3.8Aroma: overwhelmingly coffee
Taste: Bitter but well balanced with coffee
Appearance: black no lacing
Palate: medium
Overall: would buy again
