Weyerbacher Verboten

Weyerbacher Verboten

It is a Belgian-style Pale Ale with an American twist. It is brewed with pale, caramel, and wheat malts, and hopped with centennial and Cascade hops to give it a distinctly American character. The medium bodied beer has a crisp palate and moderate bitterness coupled with the fruity esters from the abbey yeast strain. It is bottle and keg conditioned so expect a tall fluffy head and a small amount of sediment. Recipe by brewer, Jeff Musselman.

3.4 Bottle into an ale glass. Pour is a haze brown. Aroma is malt and yeasty. Taste is a wash between malt and yeast. Finish is full body ed. Very good ale
3.7 12 oz bottle into a pint glass. A: Pours a mildly hazy burnt copper color. Before the dregs were poured in, it was clear amber. There’s about one and a half fingers of an eggshell-colored head, having that soapy froth expected from a Belgian-style ale. The lacing left behind is pretty decent. S: This has plenty of fresh-cut apples, some hints of apricot, and a little pear, as well. The fruitiness here is good, and it’s subtly backed by a bready yet spicy yeast note. I even pick up a kiss of hops. While the aroma is ’basic’, there’s no doubt it works quite well. T: It starts off pretty fruity (apricots, apples, and pears mainly), before it’s quickly replaced with bready notes. It finishes pretty spicy, as well: the black pepper and herbs I pick up slightly reminds me of a saison. But make no mistake, this isn’t a saison. No real complaints apart from the lack of depth. M: Any Belgian ale worth its weight in ghost chilies should always finish dry and somewhat fizzy - in layman’s terms, it should feel like it’s evaporating off the tongue. This one does that. However, it seems to rely too much on the powerful carbonation doing that job, as once that goes, its residue sticks around on the tongue a bit more than it should. O: Another solid offering from Weyerbacher. They hit the basics bang on, but there isn’t quite enough ’zing’ to make this a stellar example of the style. Still, I’d drink it again.
3.4 Light amber appearance. Slight haze with particulate matter dispersed throughout the beer. A nice sized white head with good head retention and lacing. Moderate citrus notes on the aroma. Flavor has citrus notes upfront with moderate pepper notes on the end with hints of bubblegum. Mouthfeel is medium and the finish is medium dry. The carbonation is medium. Overall, it's an easy drinking beer.
3.1 Hazy amber pour. Nose of yeast spice and fruit esters with bitter pine and a weird smoke-like aspect. Flavor is fruity malt, Belgian candy, deep toasted malt, biscuit, and finishes with a deep, dry, pine bitterness. Lingering pine and fruit. Okay but a tad odd.
2.9 Aroma: a mixture of hay malt with a slight underlying floral Appearance: amber, hazy, white foam, frothy head Taste: Odd mixture of medium sweetness with a salty finish Palate: thin feel, medium body, lightly bitter, long finish Overall: a pale ale that is an odd mixture of malt and hops. The hop taste really comes out at the finish, lasts long, and gets a little salty
3.4 Pours a clear golden/amber color with a quickly dissapating thick white head. Aroma is of esters, yeast, clove, slight malt, and slight grain. Medium bodied. Flavor is of malts, hops, slight yeast and clove, with a hint of grapefruit. Leaves a yeast and hop finish. It’s surprising how it smells like a Belgian, yet tastes like an American Pale Ale. Good job.
3.2 Overall not a bad beer, but nothing out of the ordinary. Color in was nice and formed a nice head. Suckas! :-)
2.9 Unknown bottle date. Poured to NB globe. A: Pours a hazy amber ale with a persistent, peanut colored, three finger head. The residue sticks to the glass - tacky. Good looker. S: Yeasty nose. Grain, simple earthy hops. Hints of tea. Maybe a hint of banana. Very simple and straitforward. T: Very metallic. Bitter with charred grain flavors. M: Medium body with very high carbonation. Leaves little reminiscence of its presence. D: Forgettable. Worth a try. Nice as an extra. Serving type: bottle 02-15-2011
3.6 Draft at the brewery. Pours clear copper with a creamy off white head. Tastes like grapefruit, resin, hops, musky. Light body and low carbonation. Smells like light hops, light citrus, and light musk.
3.6 Tap at brewery. Pours clear amber with thick, creamy off-white head. Aroma is cereal and cookie malts, light caramel, floral notes, candy sugar and light citrus. Flavor is a good balance of bready malts and fresh floral and grassy hops with some citrus esters and faint toast; dry finish. Medium body and carbonation.
3.1 12oz bottle thanks to Jeff. Pours a hazy orange with a tan head. Belgian yeast and citrus hop taste.
3.5 Great new world meets old world beer. Notes of orange citrus, wheat, floral hops, yeast, and fruit.
3.4 Nice Belgian pale. Pours cloudy orange with ok head and lacing. Light florals and Belgian yeast and some citrus hops here. Finishes with light bitterness. Well-balanced session Belgian ale. Bottle.
3.6 Crisp and pale, but still a harsh bitterness. A bit sweet on the palate, but an aggressive beer overall.
3.3 Bottle. poured almost like apple juice/cider, same color and with the same sort of bubbly unattractive and quickly dissipating head. But other than that, very good, very bready in the nose and estery. The hopping is good. At colder temps slightly harsh/metallic but smooths out as it warms up. Fruity and well rounded.
3.6 This is an American twist on a Belgian for sure. Not to say it is bad just not waht I am used to from a Belgian. Poured into Chimay glass a amber color with a slight cloud. No yeast residue in my glass or bottle. Aroma was of wheat with a slight sour note. Taste was also of wheat. Cascade hops are distinct. Finished with a mild bitterness. I re-rated this from org. First bottle had flaws that rest of six did not. Enjoyed next five much more. Yeast was in all others.
3.3 Bottle shared by ajax25g. Pours clear dark gold with a small, fizzy white head, short retention with spare lacing. Aroma is toast, cookie and biscuit malt with earthy hops, pear esters. Flavor is malt dominant with medium spices, fruity esters, light hops and bitterness with a dry finish. Medium body and carbonation.
3.6 Bottle. Review 06.29.11. A: Pours a thick head with a bubbly texture on the outside and foamy on top with a slightly dirty white color. The body is a glowing very dark orange / reddish tint of brown. Overall the body reminds me of swimming in a murky lake. Carbonation looks excellent. S: Very distinct clean Belgian aroma, with citrus notes, heavy spice, slight undertones of ginger. T: Very complex taste, yet well balanced. Not over the top spicy which can be a huge turn off for my taste buds. Not extremely light for a pale ale either, has a good body to it. Lingering taste is almost soapy. M: Bubbly on the lips then switches to a clean finish of yeasty spice. Lingers of herbal spiciness of something you would find in the woods. Slightly bitter on center of pallet, more bubbly on the outskirts than bitter. O: Verboten is spot on for the style with an above average flavor. Would recommend to an avid Belgian beer drinker. Easy to drink, but want to savor to let palate take it all in.
3.0 The beer has a decent appearance with a nice hazy orange color, the beer has a nice white head, some lacing on the glass, and is well carbonated. The smell is okay, you get a mild sweet smell from the belgian side but that’s about it. The taste is okay too, you get the spices from the belgian side and a mild citrus from the hops but it is very mild. The mouthfeel leaves you a little bitter and an aftertaste from the yeast. Overall, an okay beer but a weak offering from a good brewer. It left me a little disappointed because I was expecting more.
3.6 An enjoyable Belgian pale ale from an unexpected source in east coast Pennsylvania. A moderate, not overwhelming sour/bitter aroma and taste. attractive appearance with solid head and lacing. Relatively clean finish for a Belgian pale. Hoppy notes are intriguingly refreshing. ---Rated via Beer Buddy
3.0 slight hop aroma. light amber and slight haze in color with good head. flavor is crisp and slightly hoppy.
3.2 Draft at Devils Den. Pours a hazy orange amber with thin white head and spots of diminishing lace. Nose of pepper, banana, clove, hay. Medium body. Sweet with notes of spice.
3.3 Poured a hazy orange-brown color with no head. Aroma is very fruity with yeast notes. Some sweet malts. Taste is sweet with banana and oranges. Slightly floral notes. The finish is surprisingly hoppy, which helps to balance out the sweetness. Overall nice.
3.2 (tap at Blind Tiger NYC) amber with white head. Aroma of yeast. Flavor was yeast, some fruit, sweetish malt.
3.2 Pours hazy caramel with a decent but fleeting head and a bit of chunky sediment. While I don’t mind sediment, I prefer it to be a finer texture. Standard Belgian yeasty aroma. Nicely balanced flavor. The hops are a nice addition and keep it from being overly yeasty or even metallic like some Belgians can be. Good and refreshing, but not outstanding.
3.4 3/26/13 last beer of the night @the world cafe seeing josh rouse. Probably the best beer I had outside dreamweaver. Belgian like in cloudiness and taste. Little tart like sour apple at the end
3.3 Yeasty aroma of dried orange and banana peels. Thick looking orange to tan color. Fruity and sweet, has banana elements of a hefe, but taste is stronger than most wheat beers. In fact, on the whole, this thing feels stronger than it is. Slick, mid range body, not so much crisp as sharp. Weyeyrcher doesn’t do bad stuff, so the bar was to high for this one.
3.0 Hazy amber colored pour. Small white head. Not much lacing, but it is there. Typical plastic-y yeast aroma that most Belgians usually have. Malt and flowers. Taste is much the same, but with the floral taste being more prominent. Not bad.
3.4 Bottle from Logan Twp Giant Eagle. Pours orange with red hues, a two finger head that dissipates to a film relatively quickly. Super Bubble bubble gum dominates the nose, with grass clippings and thyme, lemon and coriander. The nose had potential, but the flavor is lacking. Watery beginning with a dry, astringent hop bitterness ending and after, some herbal qualities, cilantro and parsley, pepper and lemon. Not bad. Not a stand out.
3.6 Bottle. No idea on appearance due to power outage. Aroma is some belgian yeast and hops, flavor is more belgiany than anything, decent banana and yeast flavor with a bit of bitter hops at the end.
