Wicked Weed Freak Of Nature Double IPA

Wicked Weed Freak Of Nature Double IPA

The Freak is our San Francisco inspired hoppy monster. At 8.4% abv and who knows how many ibu’s, this beer is our shrine to the Hop. Absurd amounts of all the big West Coast hops give this beer it’s citrusy weedy nose and big dank hop flavor. Drinking this beer is like stuffing your face into a bag of fresh hops while eating a tangerine. We dry hop with 48lbs per batch or over 3lbs of hops per barrel. In following with the classic style of the West Coast double sugar plays a big part in creating this dry and minimally bitter double IPA. The Freak is particularly pintable for the style, so if you dare to enter we welcome you to the Freak Show.

2.9 12 oz. can, 8.5% ABV. AROMA: Aroma is fairly faint with scents of citrus, pine, and just a hint of "funk". Do yourself a favor and let this beer warm up for 2 or 3 minutes. Doing so will result in the tangerine scent becoming more prominent. APPEARANCE: Pours a hazy yellow-gold with a frothy white head that dissipates slowly and has average lacing. TASTE: Slightly sweet on the front-end and very bitter on the back-end. Flavors are mostly tangerine, pine, and bitter hops. The bitterness really takes over on the finish. Which is a shame because that is where the citrus just starts to really shine, but then is overwhelmed by the bitterness. I think if they backed off the bitterness just a little, it would make for a more enjoyable experience. MOUTHFEEL: Medium bodied with slightly slick texture and above average carbonation. Finish is dry and bitter. OVERALL: I'm on the fence with this one. The flavor is great to begin with, but then the extreme bitterness takes over and that's all I taste ... bitter. And since bitter is the last thing I taste, it leaves me wanting. I got this in a sampler pack, so I have a couple more cans of it to drink. Hopefully, it starts to grow on me, because I really want to like this beer.
2.2 Smell is of a light IPA...very mild though...taste is also more mild by far than you'd think for a double IPA, but still has that hops taste exclusively and one dimentionally....so not my style...but honestly not bad for an IPA at all...pretty smooth and not too bitter....thicker mouthfeel...great for the style I'm sure...just not my style...had at polliwogs as covid restrictions lifting...still had a regular come up to me drunk and felt the spit on my face at one point 🤣 glad I got second shot 3 days ago!! Fun times....
3.8 12 oz can. Can smell the hops upon opening. Piney hop aroma, with some grapefruit notes. Dark yellow with a murky haze. Nice bitterness. Not sure why they say minimally bitter, this one is quite bitter. Tastes of pith and pine resin with a malt background struggling to come through. A bit sticky, finish is resiny bitter. A nice hop-bomb of an ipa for when you need a break from sweet and juicy!
4.5 Great flavor...8.5, 100 IBUs
4.0 Definitely west coast, just bitter enough, good palate, not too thick, not watery. Smells juicy, drinkable yet you can tell it’s a DIPA. Well done.
3.8 Found out of can from the BP in Sylva, North Carolina. Heavy hop aroma. Enjoyable yet heavy hop flavor. Better option during a cooler season but really enjoyable any time of year.
3.4 I love a good West Coast IPA, but this is a little too bitter for the malt base given. Could use a little more grain sweetness to balance out. Maybe the selected hop profile just doesn't work for me. Has a medium yellow appearance. A forgettable DIPA.
3.2 Tap at Wicked Weed, Asheville. Color is clear golden with small white head. Fruits, hops and malts. Basic stuff with sweetish body.
4.4 Pours a golden colour thin white head. Taste is hoppy with sweet notes. dry fruity long finish.nice Beer.hope in bev don't muck it up
3.7 Draft at Strangeloves. Nearly clear gold pour with a slim layer of white foam. Fragrant aroma. A complex meaty mix of woody florals and citrus pith. Nice effervescent notes. Tangerine peels. Burnished wood. Fainter mango, leather, tobacco, and ghee. Wonderfully complicated! Nice mix. Would recommend.
4.6 very hoppy aroma. the hops and bitterness continue throughout. a really solid west coast DIPA. impressed with this brewery.
3.6 34.5cl fles. Helder goudgeel van kleur, fijne romige witte schuimkraag. De geur is citrus en ananas. Smaak is zoet, droog mout, citrus en sinaasappel. Medium body, veel koolzuur.
3.9 Had it @ The Pedalin Pig in Boone, NC
4.6 Copper with a white head. Aroma is citrus, pine, resin, black tea and peach. Taste is medium sweet and heavy bitter. Palate is medium body, sticky with average carbonation.
3.8 I like me a big IPA, fully bodied, boozy, this fit the bill, a tad earthy, but very drinkable. Pine , malty notes, grapefruit all present. Would love to get this again.
3.5 Bottle. Golden color. Slightly herbal hops, Peach and citrus in the aroma. Pineapple. Firmly hopped, almost Woody, berries, oily hops, grass, citrus. Pleasant.
3.8 Tap at BeerTemple, Amsterdam, 9th May 19. Pours clear, bubbly white head. Aroma is citrus and aromatic. Taste is smooth and citrus, some pine. Good stuff
4.1 On tap at Thunder Burger & Bar, Georgetown (Washington DC) on 09-May-2019, served in a 12oz stemmed snifter. Clear pale golden in colour with a small white head. Aroma of malt, citrus and resinous hops. Full body with soft carbonation. Taste of sweet malt, grapefruit, orange peel, floral hops and alcohol. Medium bitterness, slightly alcoholic with a dry fruity finish. Enjoyable.
3.8 Bottle from Drankenhandel Leiden. Aroma is fruity and grassy hops with (wicked) weedy tones, citrus, biscuity malt, some pine, orange, tropical notes, touch of bubblegum. Flavour is sweetish with a medium bitterness. Body is medium. A bit more grassy than I expected, and could be more 'Imperial'. That being said, this is a very fine IPA.
3.8 THT April. Clear golden with white head. Sweet malts, oily and greasy, hoppy, resiny. Big sweet and bitter. Full body and soft carbonation.
3.5 Sampled at THT April. Clear golden with white head. Thick sweet malts, soft spruce, grapefruit, honey, dry malts, dried tropical fruit. Quite sweet and bitter. Over medium bodied.
3.8 Bottle. Pours golden with a small white head. Aroma was dank with pine, citrus, and grass. Flavor of pale malts, pine, grass, citrus and grapefruit.
3.8 Same as previous rating, but with little less aroma intensity and a bit less hops flavor. Still very enjoyable.
3.6 Bottle from Trio Nag's Head. Nice Aroma of caramel malt and rose perfume hops. Very balanced flavor with mild bitterness and earthy hops. Nice enough.
3.6 Bottle shared by Tipple at Craft CG. It pours clear pale gold with a small white head. The aroma is earthy, wood, bready, oily, sticky, citrus peel, resinous, grass, weed and dankness. The taste is dry, bitter, oily, resinous, chewy, metallic, herbal, grassy, spice, resin, orange peel and some wearing alcohol. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Green and weedy. Perhaps not too much depth, but enjoyable anyhow.
3.6 Amber with small off-white head. Slightly sweet aroma. Medium strong hoppy bitterness with sweet notes.
4.0 355ml bottle. Hazy orange with a small white head. Aroma of pine, resin, grapefruit, tropical fruits. Taste is resinous, pine, grapefruit, tropical fruits, dank, malts, caramel, bitter finish. Medium bodied, smooth, soft carbonation. Great DIPA.
3.8 16th July 2018 Craft TCR bottleshare. Thanks to Tips. Light haze on this gold beer, small pale cream colour head. Smooth palate, semi dry, decent fine carbonation. Soft dry pale malts, light dry creamy sweetness. Nettley hop spice. Light citrus. Nice tropical fruits underneath. Whisper of candy fruits. Light finish. Nice.
4.2 12 oz bottle, pours a clear golden with a medium white head. Aroma brings out piney hops, with moderate dankness and crisp biscuity malt. Flavour is wonderfully fresh, with piney hops, light citrus and crisp biscuity malt. Wonderfully constructed, with impeccable balance. Don’t get classic IIPAs like this much anymore. Excellent.
4.2 bought a four pack, planned to bring some home but too good. has it all, hops, malts and full mouth feel.
