Widmer Brothers Upheaval IPA

Widmer Brothers Upheaval IPA

Brewed with 6 different hop varieties and 3 different grains, including wheat, Upheaval will be a fitting tribute, not only to the bold Northwest-style IPA, but to Kurt and Rob Widmer’s unapologetic attitude in legacy of innovation.

3.6 12oz Flasche. Trübes orange farbenes Bier, wenig Schaum. Fruchtiger Hopfenduft. Citrus, Aprikose. Schöner bitterer Antrunk. Hopfen, Karamell. Sehr rund. Passt gut zu Käse.
3.6 Leicht trübes dunkles gelb schwacher schaum, Geruch fruchtig hopfig schwer harzig; Geschmack kräftig herb trockenfrüchte harzig recht rund
3.6 Unclear, golden-amber colored, small off white head, not too lasting. Aroma is of some caramel malt and mostly tropical fruits and orange with some lighter citrus notes. Taste is medium sweet caramel malt, tropical fruits, orange, some grapefruity hops, medium bitterness, dryish finish. Medium+ bodied, soft carbonation, oily. (bottle, Bierboutique Graz)
3.9 On tap it pours a honey amber color with a nice head. The nose has fruity hops with some citrus. Taste has a nice hoppiness with some malt to balance it out. Tasty beer.
4.0 On tap. Yellow, little but cloudy with nice white head and not bad lacing. Medium aromas of citrus and herbs, could have been stronger. Medium body with very stron bitterness finish. Really a good one.
4.3 Upheaval is a hop-forward IPA with a 6-hop bouquet of Northwestern America’s cones. Lovely floral aromatics. The flavor profile has lots of citrus and forest hops. While there is quite a lot of bitterness, the balance is still nice and approachable. A beautiful example of what Western America’s IPA’s are all about.
3.5 Somewhat cloudy orange-copper pour with aroma of citrus, grain, and some pine. Citrus flavor with bread, pine, and some caramel. Very nice beer.
2.6 12-ounce bottles poured into a large dimpled mug. Unfiltered, tall head, strong floral aroma, hints of grapefruit. I am not a fan of most IPAs but this one is not as bitter as most. Easy drinking for a 7% abv. The best IPA I have had.
3.0 Sadly the best before date was almost due with this one. Orange beer with small head on top. Aroma has caramel and cookie malts with some pines. Taste is malty, caramel sweetness and cookie malts with pines in the end. Medium body and medium carbonation. Definitely the best edge has been mellowed here.
4.0 12oz bb06/2016 from Bierhandlung Freiburg. Light orange, mid-viscous pour. Sweet apricot marmelade, pine and cooked pineapple aroma. Satisfyingly rich, jammy mouthfeel - something not easily replicated by EU cover versions. Best of sweet, resinous C-hops in taste, quince and pineapple marmelade sealed with dewy resins and a kafir lime leaf floral finish. Satisfying classic.
3.8 Good aroma, very potent, could smell it out of the bottle. Floral, yeasty, with a bit of citrus. Appearance was nicely amber with a small white head, slightly hazy Taste was bitter with a bit of sweetness Palate had medium body with slick texture average carbonation and clean short finish Good for a cheap IPA I liked and would definitely try it again.
3.6 Bottle from Chevy Chase Wine and Liquors. Hazy gold body with thin head. Nose is floral, hoppy. Taste is hoppy, spice. Peppery. Clean finish.
3.6 22oz bottle pours clear amber gold with a finger of head. Nose and palate have toasted honey, malt grain, medium-low sweetness, sticky orange, pine, apricot, spice. Finishes with moderate sweet hiney malt biscuit, piney round orange, medium citrus fruit notes, strong bitterness.
3.4 Bottle. Pale amber, hazy. An inch of white head. Aroma is OK but not the boldest. Has mandarins, tropical bubblegum, some pine. Thin for 7% - thinnish for 5. More rambunctious on the palate, but not necessarily an improvement - it’s bold but a mite disjointed. Sweetish, weedy and fruity. Herbal and boiled orange notes with medium to high bitterness. Bracing.
3.7 Bottle@Oak Barrell, Helsinki airport. Pours golden light hazy amber. Aroma of hops, tropical fruits and slight caramel. Taste brings in also some herbal notes and pine. Texture is surprisingly thick. Typical tasty IPA from the US.
3.5 Bottle@oak barrel. Hazy orange color with medium light brown head. Aroma has malt, citrus, grass. Taste is malty with quite long bitter aftertaste. Flavors of malt, pine, grapefruit.
3.4 Bottle @ home. Aroma of pine and citrus hops. Light hazy amber with white head, mostly diminishing. Taste is moderate bitter and light sweet. Medium body, oily texture, avg.+ carb., bitter finish.
3.9 17/II/16 - 12Fl. Oz. bottle @ home - BB: n/a, bottled: VIII/25/15 (2016-162) Thanks to Kristien for the bottle! Bit cloudy orange beer, creamy yellowish head, little stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: sweet, tropical fruits, lots of caramel, mango, malty, honey touch. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: bitter start, resinous hops, some citrus, pineapple, very bitter. Aftertaste: hoppy, resinous, bit floral, soapy, some alcohol, medicinal bitterness lingering in the end.
3.5 Bottle thanks to my father in law. A: Cloudy darkened yellow with a thin white foam head. Some lacing. N: Grapefruit, pine, earth, some orange, cracker and biscuit, lemon rind, hint of marijuana. T: Quite bitter but not astringent. Propped up by crackery malt. M: Very very dry, hint of alcohol, spritzy carbonation. O: Solid IPA. This one hits all the quintessential IPA points and is well built and clean.
3.8 Poured from the six pack of bottles, looks orange with white foam. No apologize needed on this one, solid IPA at a good price.
3.2 Bottle->shaker at BWW in Buckhannon. Hazy orange-gold with moderate white head. Citrus and pine hops, caramel malt. Unbalanced.
3.4 В аромате и вкусе хмель и хвоя, довольно нежное на вкус. Горчинка в послевкусии.
3.6 Slightly hazy orange amber with soapy head. Sweet pine aroma with orange and lemon. Very juicy mouthfeel with sweet finish. Sweet lemon taste. Very refreshing.
3.7 330ml bottle served in a pint glass. A: Pours a cloudy orange color forming a small and soapy white head with medium to low retention and lots of thin soapy lacings left in the glass. S: Nose is very grassy. Strong notes of resin, pine and citrus fruits and zest. Sweet caramel malts and grapefruit.T: Slightly sweet upfront. Strong notes of grapefruit, orange zest, pine, resin, grass and caramel malts. Strong hops bitter punch in the end. Persistent bitterness. Good bittersweet balance. M: Medium body. Soapy and molasses. Bittersweet aftertaste which is very grassy and piny. Persistent bitterness. O: Good drinkability. Good American IPA.
3.3 Tao at Brickhouse. Unfiltered thick orange-tan body. Big head. Pronounced citrus hop aroma. Hmm. Awkward mix between dull APA and new school IPA. Like a hop extract bomb, neutered, hospital IPA. Artificial West Coast IPA. Unimpressive.
2.7 Yellow color with foam layer. The smell is hoppy grassy. The taste is bitter tart without compromises. Too dry and too little substance to justify the level of hopping. Not bad, but not balanced either.
4.0 Bottle. Juicy, resiny, floral, orangey hops, subtle tropical notes, soft and crisp flavour, subtle sweetness, balanced by a strong yet not overbearing bitterness. Lovely beer.
(Rating #6518)
3.4 Draft at Sioux Falls fest. Hazy golden amber color, medium white head. Aroma of citrus and pine. Taste is balanced, fruity. Easy drinking for a 7%er.
3.4 12 oz bottle of Upheaval IPA into a lager glass. Bottled date on the label of March 2015. Pours with a medium amber body that is slightly hazy. The medium size (~1 cm) bone-colored head is quite durable and leaves plenty of sticky lacing on the glass. Tropical fruit hop aroma with some baked bread and herbal hops precedes the very fruity (citrus) flavor. Moderate-mild bitterness is below average for American IPAs, which is fine by me. In fact, for just a moment it is actually sweet when it hits the tongue. O: a very good IPA, at least for those who like the fruity hop varieties and limited bitterness.
