Hops + hops + hops!

Our version of the 'West Coast' IPA - the beer that sparked a revolution

When Brett arrived from California he couldn’t believe there weren’t any of his beloved ‘West Coast’ IPAs readily available in the UK. This beer is his version of the style that sparked the craft beer revolution in the US.

Among the orchards and pastures of the green and pleasant Somerset countryside you’ll find our unusual brewery. Our neighbours at Westcombe Dairy make one of the finest Cheddars in the world and Madness balances its intensity and flavours perfectly.

Our Madness IPA uses four classic American hops renowned for their citrus and resinous characteristics. Amarillo, Citra, Centennial and Columbus – used somewhat liberally in late hop and dry hop additions – make this beer what it is. We use a very simple malt bill, and a yeast with a very low flavour impact so that the hops can really shine.

Open the bottle to a tropical punchbowl of aromas, as this beer is all about the hops. There are masses and masses of late hops and dry hops to maximise the beautiful flavours and aromas, so you can experience wave after wave of tropical and citrus fruits.

3.2 330ml bottle, drank at home during a mini tasting session with myself on 1st June 2018, this was one of four beers from Wild Beer that evening. Slight haze to the golden amber body, white affair on top. Hop centric with citrus and piney notes in both the nose and taste, semi-bitter throughout.
3.2 #2236 Tap. Almost clear, amber, medium white head. Aroma of hops, resiny, fruits. Taste is slightly sweet, moderately bitter, juicy, woody, resiny. Medium body and carbonation.. Too sharp, don't like it.
3.4 Draught at Zubatý Pes. Clear, gold colored. AROMA- hoppy, mix of fruit, floral tones, tea. FLAVOR- neutral, lightly bitter, quite fruity and hoppy, malts. Medium bodied. Very hoppy IPA.

3.8 Can. It pours hazy yellow with a creamy white head. Fruity and exotic hoppy aroma. Great malty. Passion fruit and light pine. The flavor is good malty with fruity hops like passion fruit and grapefruit. Light mango and pine. Great balance between hops and malt.
3.7 Can, 0.33l. Aroma of citrus, passion fruit, pine and biscuit. Pours cloudy golden color with medium frothy white head, fair lacing and sparkling appearance. Taste starts with medium sweet and rich toasted malt, following is fruity, grassy and slightly medicinal, mouthfeel is spicy and warm, while finish is heavy bitter with long lasting aftertaste. Medium body, oily texture and lively carbonation in palate. Hop-star....
3.4 Clear golden with a creamy white head. Aroma of peach, grapefruit and pine. Taste is medium bitter and sweet wirh notes of grape, peper, citrus and peach.
4.0 Közepes, tartós hab, homályos, narancssárga szín. Citrusos, citrushéjas, grapefruitos illat. Citrusos, grapefruitos, mangós-barackos ízek, fűszeres aromákkal karöltve. Lágy, közepesen testes, közepesen szénsavas és keserű, kissé fanyar lecsengéssel. Kiváló egyensúllyal rendelkező, jól sikerült IPA.
4.4 Big hoppy, grapefruit and tropical aroma and taste. Some bitterness but not overly so. For me, very well balanced IPA and one I will be buying again. Very good.
2.9 Bottle. Green grapefruit, lime, lemon, light notes of pine, gooseberry and carambola. Dry, light overcarbonated, unfortunately also boozy. Very promising aroma, while the flavour fails to deliver.

Bière magnifique, that's all folks !
