3.7 I poured this goose into a pint glass. It was brownish-red with a small head. The smell was of oats, malts, and cereal. The taste was very malty and had a slight hint of oats also. Very easy to drink but I can’t see myself seeking this out when there are so many other good winter warmers. Also, the label said this ages well? Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 03-20-2007 17:00:39
3.9 From the bottle, this pours a syrupy brown color with a tan colored head that fizzes a bit after the pour and dissipates quickly. Coffee, caramel and roasted nuts in the nose. Mouthfeel up front is thin, but filled with caramel, coffee, nuts and some chocolate. Finish is smooth and slightly bitter. I may be ranking this higher than I should since I live 10 mins away from the brewery, but this is a good winter ale.
3.1 Clear amber pour with a thin offwhite head. Decent aroma of chocolate, mild spices and caramel. Decent flavor of chocolate, caramel, toasted malt and mild spices. The body is light to medium while the carbonation is moderate. Nothing much to say other than it’s ok, but forgettable.
3.3 Mohogany pour with an off-white head. Aroma of caramel, hops, and toast. Taste is lightly roasted, caramel. Other tastes there that I am not sure what it is. I would drink this again. Nicee hoppy aftertaste.
3.3 Dark translucent brown, thin wispy beige head. Aroma of honey, molasses, berry, and hop citrus. Taste is roasty sweet with a hop bite. Pretty sharp hops for an English style. Medium thin body, lots of carbonation.
3.3 12 ounce bottle from Beer Run in Charlottesville, VA. Pours a clear red color with a medium creamy tan head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma is a bit odd... caramel malts, hops, vinegar, butter. Taste is caramel, toffee, berries, other fruit notes and bitter, leafy hops. A bit of alcohol warmth as well. Medium bodied.
3.3 A dark ruby color with a tan head. A nice toffee flavor with a bitter hop finish with a touch of alcohol warming. Similar in profile to a barleywine but lighter. I haven’t had this in a few years; doesn’t live up to what I remember from years back, but still nice and drinkable.
3.5 A: pours a nice shade of brown with amber highlights. Small creamy head with light light. S: Pine and Citrus hop aromas meld with aromas of sweet malt, toast, and caramel. T: Flavor of caramel malts and spice. Nutmeg maybe. Light notes of orange and molasses. M: On the fuller side of medium. Smooth, tasty. D: Not too bad, a pleasant surprise.
3.5 Bottle from family in the area. Poured clear redish brown with a small off-white head, little lace. Aroma is really malty, some roasted and sweet notes, light spice, mild fruit. Taste is extremely malty, again mixed roast and sweetness. Some light spice & fruit notes. Hop presence is very mild. Some nut flavors also noticed. Mouth is smooth and carbonation is mild. Overall, a decent winter ale.
3.7 Bottle. 12oz. Pours honey brown with a beige head. Aroma of honey, roasted malt, hops, and spice. Medium body with a strong finish. Very nice strong ale.
3.1 Bottle. Nice malt and caramel aroma. The taste was malty with a sweet finish. The carbonation seemed very fizzy to me.
3.2 12 oz bottle into a pint glass. Nice hoppy finish, but otherwise and altogether relatively average.
3.4 Pours dark copper with a thin tan head. Smells of raisins, some molasses, sweet. Tastes earthy and dry with some spiciness and a fruity finish.
3.3 Bottle from Party Source. Poured clear brown color with medium off-white fizzy head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Medium roasted malt aroma with a hoppy tone. Medium body with a smoth texture and soft carbonation. Medium flavor of roasted malt with a medium bittersweet finish of moderate duration. Good interesting brew.
2.7 A so so beer. Aroma was nice. A woody earthiness with strong caramel malt and a hint of must. Pour was a nice deep dark brown with a pinky sized tan head. Taste was a little thin but the wood and caramel malt mix well together. This is not an oak aged beer, the woodiness is more earthy than in your face if that makes sense. Weak carbonation and a thin aftertaste.
2.7 Bottle shared with curly at woody’s. The abv was listed as 6.3%. Pours a clearish brown with fair tan head. Pretty bland, malty, a little cardboard. Lightly roasty with some chocolate notes. I would like to taste this again fresh.
3.5 Poured a nice dark reddish-brown, and smelt of roasted malts. Had a malty taste to it with a bit of spices, overall it was a very enjoyable winter brew.
3.1 12oz Bottle: Pours walnut brown w/ red highlights & a very small beige head. First thing to pop out of the aroma was roasted malt & caramel, followed by hops. First taste: Roasted malt, caramel, light hops & spices w/ a slightly metallic finish. Yay, done.
3.6 12 oz bottle. Pours relatively clear crimson-brown, with a small tan head. Aroma is roasty, malty and slightly spicy, with some nutty and dark fruit character and citrus hops. Malty, spicy, nutty and dry flavor with some chocolate up front and a lot of citrusy hops in the finish. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation, slightly astringent finish. Good solid winter warmer.
3.6 THOUGHTS: Nice beer, very British. A little too sweet, but the funk makes it interesting. A little barley wine-like. Yet also wee heavy-like. My bottle said the ABV was 6.3%. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a clear, medium to dark, reddish amber with a small, off-white head that mostly diminished and left fair lacing. The aroma was moderate to heavy dark bread and caramel malt, light to moderate herbal hops, light leathery and cobweb-like yeast, apple, cherry, whiskey, candy, slight tea and lemon and slight smoke. The initial flavor was sweet and a little acidic; while the finish was a cidic an rather bitter with and average duration. There was caramel, cherry, apple, tea, herbal hops, citrus, dark bread and candy. The medium body was slightly syrupy and also oily with very fizzy carbonation and a light to moderate astringent finish.
3.1 well it had some spices, overall it was not too bad. It was a good winter beer. Hazaah!!!
2.6 Rating from Feb ’09 Overall Impression: Decent winter ale, with a toasty flavor, good effort I guess, but there’s something missing that makes it just not work quite right.
3.1 Bottle- Dark amber brown pour, off white head. Sweet malts with a slight toast, caramel, nuts. Medium body, earthy hops, better as it warms.
3.9 On tap at Heroes in Annapolis, MD. Dark brown with a thin tan head. Not too heavy, with a little bit of hops. A great beer to have 3 or 4 of on a night out at the bar. I’m not going to go on with details, I’ll just say I enjoy this beer very much.
3.0 Pours a dark brown with red highlights when held to the light and a creamy off-white head. Aroma is malty, rock candy sugar and chocolate, and a bit of white grape juice scent. Very interesting smell overall. The flavour found spices, coffee, dark chocolate, and some roast to it. Medium body with a coffee aftertaste.
(Rating #2195)
3.2 In short: A basic sweet malted and slightly woody ale. A bit approximate-amateurish yet also rather pleasant How: Bottles, tasting session with Montreal crew. The look: Almost clear amber body topped by a small beige head In long: Nose of toasted bread and some woody hops. Taste has the sweet malt upfront with a pie crust character followed by toasted bread with caramel, dry wood, some unexpected milk chocolate and everything ends with a decent amount of leafy hops. The beer feels imprecise, a bit off even, yet I found it inexplicably very drinkable. One of those little pleasure that cannot justify, like smelling the paper after whipping my ass.
3.4 Bottle. Pours a dark amber color with a small off white head. Aroma of malt, caramel and hops. Taste is light hops, spices, and malt with an earthy undertone. Has a slight astringent, dry finish.
3.5 Dark brown color with some reddish hues. Aroma of malts, nuts, On the palate, caramel, roasted malts, nuits, and some hops. Medium body. Very enjoyable
3.3 12 oz bottle purchased at Frugal MacDoogal’s in Nashville. Poured a dark brown color, kind of like a coke, with a two finger tan head. The aroma nuts and sweet malt. The flavor is heavy with caramel and toasted bread. The palate was average, with a medium/full body, mild carbonation and a chewy mouthfeel. I was pleased with this beer.
