Wiper and True Stout Milk Shake

Wiper and True Stout Milk Shake

Milk Stouts are brewed with sugar from cow’s milk to give the beer a sweet, creamy tone. Bristol breweries were once famous for making the best milk stouts around. For our take on the traditional recipe we’ve used copious amounts of chocolate malts and laced it with vanilla to create a milkshake rich, velvety and satisfying dark beer.

MALTS • Maris Otter Pale, Chocolate, Crystal, Roast Barley, Torrefied Wheat.

HOPS • Phoenix

Previously 5.1% in 2014 changed to 4.8%. In 2019 back at 5.6%.

4.3 03-12-2020; can; at home (bought at Saveur Bière, as part of their November 2020 discovery box). The beer looks like a true Stout. The colour is a nice deep dark chestnut/ruby red blend, almost black on the eye. On top a nice grayish brown layer of foam. Foam retention is low and a minimal drape is left on top of the beer. It does look quite nice. The aroma of the beer is nice too. It is very full and rich. Malts give nice aromas of chocolate and coffee, nice vanilla. It has that milky softness and richness. Nice creamy note. It does have something of a chocolate milk shake. Hops are mild, and give just some slightly herbal notes. It is nice. Not too complex, but nice and really chocolate milkshakey. The taste of the beer is very nice too. It has a nice sweetness, both from the malts and form the lactose. The lactose doesn't make it too sweet, since it also gives a smooth creaminess. Hops are nice and bitter, so is the roast. The result is a well balanced beer. Also the palate of the beer is nice. Medium carbonation, full body and a smooth texture. The finish of the beer is nice too. Full of chocolate, some vanilla, a touch of coffee. Very rich and creamy. The end is nice and long, fades away slowly. All in all, a very good beer and truly a milkshake Stout. I like it when a beer does what it says on the label.
3.8 Can at home. Black with a tan foam. Scent is intensive brown sugar, lactose stout. Mild dough. Taste is relatively mild, silky stout. Thankfully some roasted malt. Even so, still mild. Surprisingly quaffable. Very mild, gentle herbal pepper. Great beer. I want the XL version.
4.0 A really nice stout from hb
3.8 Pours a black with small brown head. Aromas of coffee, roast malts and chocolate. Creamy and smooth texture. Chocolate, vanilla and sweet milky aromas with notes of coffee and roast malts. Nicely balanced with a subtle bitter finish.
4.0 330ml can. Black pour, thin beige head, some retention and lacing. Aroma of roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, lactose. Taste is creamy, roasted nuts, chocolate, quite sweet. Smooth mouthfeel, low carbonation. Finish is dry with a low but lasting bitterness and is enough to balance the sweetness. Very impressive.
4.0 330ml can from Honest Brew. Dark brown with a small off white head. Aroma is coffee, vanilla, dark chocolate and a little leather. Flavour is lovely, sweet cream, chocolate, coffee Earlier Rating: 7/31/2019 Total Score: 3.9 330ml bottle. Very dark brown with a creamy tan head. Aroma is creamy coffee and chocolate. Flavour is more of the same with a lovely sweetness. Splendid

3.6 Can from Beer52. BB May 2021; Drank July 2020 - Black. Medium frothy tan head. Roasty malts, milk chocolate, vanilla, coffee, caramel. Dark fruit notes. Moderately sweet milky chocolate and vanilla roast malty. Enjoyed this. Good stuff. (2020-07)
3.5 Vanilla-flavoured milk stout by this successful craft brewery in Bristol, thanks to Pieter for sharing the can! Mousy, pale greyish beige, medium thick head on a very dark chocolate brown beer with reddish burgundy hue. Aroma of cold black coffee, milk powder, Ersatz chocolate, caramel sauce, fig jam, hazelnut purée, prunes, sugared tea. Sweet onset, clear lactose effect from the start, candied figs, raisins, medium carbonated with an oily, yet slender body; very caramelly middle with hazelnut- and toffee-like layers, some 'koetjesreep' in the end, all edged by 'blood'-like, naturally feeling iron; herbal tea-like aspect in the end, 'pepernoot' and gingerbread, but the vanilla was either very subtle to begin with or has already faded by now, as I am getting very little of it, regrettably. Light roasty bitterness in the finish, but the lactose remains dominant, with a bubblegummy effect in the end. Traditional milk stouts are not the easiest style to get right - and I doubt if they get any better with additional flavourings, to be honest... This one is about halfway there.
3.4 Aroma : Medium roasted chocolate malt, rich sweet chocolate fudge cake with a hint of vanilla. Taste : As aroma. Medium bodied. Moderate to high chocolatty sweetness throughout. Good; but would have been superb with a little more bitter roast!
4.0 Can from Beer Hawk Aroma: cappuccino, blackcurrant Pours espresso black with small beige head. Mike carbonation. Creamy mouthfeel. Taste is perfectly balanced with great depth and a just-right sweetness. Easy drinking for a stout. Excellent; one of the best stouts I’ve tried.
3.7 Nice grainy, earthly aroma. slightly bitter taste with a dry finish. Nice beer , but not as good as their lager.
3.7 Can at home picked up from Beer 52. A jet black dark brown coloured pour with a lasting loose dark tan head. Aroma is nutty roast, hazelnut, lactose, milky sugars, light praline. Earlier Rating: 7/3/2015 Total Score: 3.5 Bottle picked up from Oddbins London bridge. Aroma is sweet nutty choc, praline, vanilla, little wood. Opaque black caramel borwn coloured pour with a lasting loose light tan head. Flavour is composed of sweet milky lactose sugars, milk choc, praline, woody, light toast. Palate is medium full, semi-sweet, lowish to moderate carbonation. Decent sweet stout.
3.8 330ml can; BB 15th May 2021. The first of my 'Day of Dark Beers' tasting session with myself at home on 7th Jun 2020. Beige/light tanned foam on top of the dark brown/black body. The nose is full of vanilla, coffee and chocolate with a nutty trace or two. Semi-sweet malty molasses give the taste a good base for the flavours to express themselves; milky chocolate, vanilla, mild coffee beans and a mini nutty undertone.
3.0 From Beer52 had at home in may 2020, can't remember what it was like. 330 ml bottle.
3.7 Dark brown appearance. Aroma is nutty, coffee and chocolate. Flavour is coffee, lactose, chocolate and nutty.

2.2 Pours black with the usual chocolate and coffe notes. Hint of sweetness but very subtle. Found the lactose bit strong but i suppose its just doing what it should. Not outstanding
4.0 Pours black with a yellow head and thick lacing. Aroma is vanilla, hazelnut, dark chocolate, plums and raisin. Taste is sweet with a lingering bitter finiah with great body. Nice milk stout.
3.0 A 500ml bottle from Waitrose, still in date. Pours a very dark brown with next to no head. Aromas & tastes of chocolate, vanilla, lactose & sweet malt. Medium body with very little carbonation. Sweet malty finish. Decent & enjoyable even if it was a little out of condition.

3.9 Creamy tan head left a decent cover on a dark oak coloured still body. Dark chocolate, lactose & coffee aroma. Medium bodied, smooth & silky over the tongue with light clean back. Lactose, malt, demerara, dark berry & sweet citrus tastes. Nice one! Earlier Rating: 12/11/2016 Total Score: 3.9 Creamy tan head stayed on a near black still body. Dark chocolate aroma with brown sugar & hints of coffee. Very smooth on the palate, slides down! Medium bodied, silky & smooth on the palate - feels bigger than the ABV. Sweet chocolate, dark chocolate, milk, dark sugar, vanilla & slightly burnt flavours on the back. Lots of flavour.
3.6 Aroma of milk chocolate and vanilla latte. Pours dark brown almost black bodied with thin lace top. Taste is medium sweet but there's a backnote of lactic toothpaste bewilderment. Palate is medium bodied clammy feel average to soft carbonation and a light bitter finish. Still decent despite the taste confusions.
4.0 Tasted this at the Shilling Brewery, Glasgow on the 1st November 2019. Keg dispense, 2/3 pint sampled. Dull black in colour with a thin creamy off white head. Malty aroma with creamy notes of vanilla and milk chocolate present. Thin but creamy mouthfeel and poor lacing. Dark malts give a chocolate torte base with smooth creamy lactose in abundance. There is a subtle hint of hop resins present in the brief aftertaste but sweet malt is dominant here. Finish is malty sweet and very smooth with rich drinking chocolate powder to the fore along with creamy vanilla pods. Good complexity and mouthfeel for 4.8%
3.8 Just... A reall solid milk stout. The lactose in it doesn't overwhelm, the creamy chocolate isn't sickly, the malt is dry and toasty enough to balance it without spoiling the other flavours. Really good, rich stout Earlier Rating: 1/13/2017 Total Score: 3.6 At Hippo Tap Room. Black beer, thin brown head. Hefty aroma of chocolate malt. Taste is rich malt, creamy chocolate, light vanilla. Very mellow but it’s rich and sweet. Very pleasant and because it’s not sickly for all the sweetness (certainly when slightly chilled as mine was) you could probably happily spend a night on it.
3.7 Smooth, creamy vanilla ice cream and Tia Maria flavours. A little espresso bitterness but not excessive. Cola float sweetness. A tad cloying but par for the course with a milk stout. Good for one.
3.6 (21/10/2019) 330ml bottle. Jet black with a thin tan head. Aroma of powdered chocolate, milky coffee and lightly roasted malts. Light to medium body, perhaps a touch thin for a stout but I don't mind it. Taste of milk chocolate, milky coffee, a bit of vanilla and lightly roasted malts. Very nice milk stout overall.
3.9 Black appearance with a small head. Chocolate smooth flavour with a medium body. Quite a mild flavour but still pretty powerful. An easy to drink beer and another good one from this excellent brewery.
