3.1 Cask at GBBF’17, day three, 10/08/17. Light black with a decent tan cap clearing to a swirl. Nose is earthy fruits, cocoa powder, light spice, dark malt. Taste comprises toffee, cocoa powder, tobacco, dried fruits, light spice, plummy notes. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, drying close. Ok but expected a little more from a ’classic’.
3.3 Sweet grain malts, molasses, caramel, dark fruits, raisins. Clear brown, small, creamy, beige head. Medium sweet. More dark, sweet malts, molasses, dried, dark fruits, blackcurrant, prunes, soft carbonation, medium bodied. Alright Old Ale, not quite as rich as hoped for. Cask at GBBF17, Kensington Olympia.

3.4 Cask. Dark Brown, almost Black, in colour. Malty (roasty malts, caramel, toffee, chocolate & liquorice notes). Fruity (dark fruits, raisins, berries). Subtle hop bitterness. Slightly sweet fruity malty throughout. Tangy, slightly sour, fruit & hop in the finish. Nice beer! (2008)
2.8 Wenig karbonisierter, trocken röstiger Antrunk. Milde Bitterkeit, hintergründig mild fruchtig nach Birne, Okay. 9/8/8/8/6/8
3.1 Many thanks to Erzengel for sharing! Pours almost black with a mid-sized good lasting beige head. Aroma of dark malt, red fruits, some caramel. Taste of dark red fruits, dry caramelish malt, some wood, interesting!
3.4 Pours a red brown colour with a small light tan head. Aroma is fruit and malt, dark berry and caramel. A sweet malty caramel taste with treacle, smoke and fruit flavours. Medium body, a dry lingering finish with some bitterness at the end.
3.3 Many thanks to Grumbo fro this bottle! Smooth malty dry beginning. Sessionable, round and intense. The malt is round, the body is fresh. Smooth mild in the aftertaste, smooth, mild caramel, moderate bitter. Nice English Ale, round and smooth. Sessionable! The hops are typical and fresh!
3.6 Cask, quarterly ale, 1/2 pint, hand-pulled at Sir John Moore, Glasgow on 5 Oct 2016, sweet berry, toffee aroma, deep chestnut, blood red with a thin beige head and good lacing, fruity, treacle toffee flavours, little bit yeasty, sweet.
3.5 Cask at JDWs in Tonbridge. Dark pour with tan head. Smokey, roasted malt, some molasses, hint of cherries in the finish. Nice beer.
3.6 Bottle from Beers of Europe. Appearance - opaque black with a lovely fawn head. Nose - molasses, liquorice and caramel biscuits. Taste - smoke, tar and molasses. More caramel biscuits. Palate - medium bodied with a creamy yet crunchy texture and a long dry crunchy finish. Overall - enjoyable.
3.3 Cask. Aroma certainly hints at flat cola and dark fruit, as others note. Tan head, dark brown body. Bready malts predominate at first with some sweet notes and soft carbonation. The bitterness is subdued and fleeting. But as a drinker who favours the dark side the tip towards malt is fine and gives me more toffee to chew on. Nevertheless the chewiness may preclude a second.
3.4 Hand-pulled cask pint in the ground floor of the Layton Rake (Wetherspoons), Blackpool on 9th Sep 2016. Deep, dark brown with a touch of ruby (in a bright light); on top a beige blanket of tight foam. Dark hedgerow fruits sit alongside a malt laden nose, taste is semi-sweet leading to a more bitter finish, dark berries within the flavours. Made a pleasant change to all the light citrusy flavoured beers I had been drinking earlier in the day.
3.6 Cask HP at The Crosse Keys Bishopsgate as ’Woodfordes NOG’, 4.6%. Very dark brown with a red hue, opaque, foamy tan head. Aroma is cola and prunes, dried fruits. Body is smooth with soft carbonation. Taste is smooth malts, sorren loaf, currants, light toffee. Very little noticeable bitterness but is very balanced. I like it, and I could drink several pints of it.
3.5 Cask at the Paisley Beer Festival 2016. Pours clear dark brown with a thin white head. Aromas of toffee, caramel. Taste is sweet, nutty. Decent old ale.
3.7 Strange smell and taste at first but gives way to a much nicer aftertaste. Black in colour and tastes just how I would expect. Slightly sweetat first but bitter afterwards.
2.7 Cask at the Golden Lion, Newmarket. Dark brown with hints of ruby. Translucent. A nice big beige head. Sweet and slightly smoky aroma. Not much there but what there is smells lovely. Sugary taste with a tannic note in the finish. The aftertaste has more of a bitter tinge. Surprisingly watery mouthfeel. Not one of Woodforde’s better recipes.
3.4 Looks like coca cola with a fine big tan head. Ok lacing. Bready, toffee and mild fruity aroma. Ok body and a decent soft-ish carbonation for a beer like this. Mellow sweetness and a moderate bitterness. Toffee, bready and some chocolate in the flavour. Nice ale. [Bottle from Beers Of Europe in England]
3.5 Bottle from Beers Of Europe [151115] Dark caramel brown, clear, some bubbles around edge of glass, thin off white film Aroma of toasted malts, earthy hops, dab of dark fruit, dark caramel malts, dab of yeast, slight minerals Taste of caramel malts, soft toasted malts, quite malts, brown bread crust, soft yeast, light earthy hops, dab of dark fruit, taste better than aroma, touch of chocolate, nice malts in this Palate - Very soft carb, medium body, smooth texture, light sweet. Finish has more dark fruit malts, brown bread malts Overall - Easy going, good tasting enjoyable stuff
3.9 cereal, soy sauce aromas from a browny/black (think cola) coloured body with a thin tan head, tastes a bit like flat cherry cola with a smokey burnt finish, very good moreish....
3.6 Bottle at home. Pours brown, sweet chocolate nose, rich chocolate and liquorice, toffee.
3.4 500ml bottle; a gnat’s cough of carbonation on popping the crown. Red-tinted mahogany with a loose white head retreating fast. Roasted, spiced dark fruits aroma with impressions of blackcurrant, mauby, chicory, vanilla pod and a smear of dung. Fine, mildly intriguing flavour with roasted hazelnut and lingering sweet chocolate touches; root beer, spiced pear and apple. Low condition not detracting from the flavour. Decent festive effort.
3.2 Cask at The Ale House, Colchester. Poured a clear dark brown with a red hue and a frothy white, long-lasting head. The aroma is weak roasted malt. The flavour is medium to weak bitter with a thin watery weak liqourice hop bitter palate. Light bodied with flat carbonation. It’s a little weak all round to be honest. Needs more defining attributes.
2.9 Keighley Beer Festival. Very dark with a small head and as the programme notes suggested it does have a plummy sweetness and a dry bitterness.
2.9 it’s got all the right attributes but not mixed in the right way. akin to a great pop band gigging in a northern working mens club on a tuesday with Heston doing the buffet.
3.8 Cask. Strong roasted malts emanate from this dark, slightly frothy old ale. Medium body. Nice sweetness with caramel and slightly burnt malt. Low on the hops. Nice. Bottled it’s much more lively, a bit thinner and needs to be poured and left alone for 15 minutes before drinking (3.0)
3.7 Bottle. Dark brown colour. Lightbrown good mostly lasting head. Heavy malty and light hoppy aroma. Moderate bitter great flavor. Some caramellic notes. Average moderate bitter finish. Creamy palate. Wonderfull well-balanced beer.
3.1 Deep brown with essentially no head. Scent is roast, chocolate malt,...a little spray paint. Taste is darkly fruited, chocolate.....very thin. Slightly herbal sour. Very smooth.
