Xbeeriment Barack

Xbeeriment Barack

NOTE! In the US this beer is marketed as Xbeeriment #44. The reason for this is that any references to President Obama would only be permitted by US authorities if we had a written permission from the White House. So the dressing’s changed, but the beer stays the same!

Also please NOTE that the first US edition of "Xbeeriment #44" is erroneously labelled 10.4% ABV.

English: Brewed to celebrate Barack Obama’s inaugural as the 44th President of the United States, and the first black person to hold the office. A potent stout with a fair amount of peated malt in the grain bill. This adds a smoky character to the beer which obviously also has roasted aromas from the dark malts and roasted barley as well as loads of citrusy hop notes from the US hop varieties.

NOTE: From 2009 - 2012 this beer was brewed at Amager Bryghus. From the summer of 2012 it will be brewed at Herslev Bryghus.

2.7 Mild würziger Antrunk, kernig malzig. Im Mittelteil etwas laff, nur noch wenig würzig, süß getreidig, monoton. Zum Ende wieder etas malziger mit bitterem Unterton. 11/11/9/7/7/8
4.0 Bottle - 500ml. Pours an opaque black body with an average beige foamy head. Wonderful, complex malty/hoppy aroma with roasty, chocolate, and some smoked ham/bacon hints. Its robust, well balanced taste carries licorice, roasted coffee, and smokey notes. Ends with a long, warming bitter/roasty finish. Very well done.
2.1 As smoked stouts go, this one is pretty lame and tepid. Definitely not worth the price for this one. Needs more smoke definitely.
3.7 Rated as Mikkeller/Xbeeriment #44 smoked stout... Brown black in color... Light tan head... Aroma of roasted malts, oak, heavy peated malts... Flavor is fairly sweet roasted malts with smoke coming through late and especially on palate... Fairly enjoyable but smoke kind of overwhelms other nuances... Solid
4.0 pours unclear very dark brown with a creamy beige head, good retention and lacing. chocolate and roasted coffee beans, bold yet under control smoked more than peated malts, red fruitiness, piney and resinous, peppery and dusty-not quite ashy roastiness - some welcoming minerals too, moderate sweetness - pinch of milk. moderate carbonation, medium body - oily, assertive and bold bitter coffee-smoky-piney finish. balanced smoked stout. tasty and good too! solid.
3.6 Dark, almost black. Has a light brown head, lasting. Dark, roasted aroma with notes of port-wine, soft and still some faint coffee notes. Yeasty too. Flavor starts heavy sweet, more roasted, lightly burnt notes. Smoke? Perhaps. Moderate bitter finish. Soft texture.
3.0 grass, brown, off white foam, light sweetness, medium bitterness, medium body, creamy, soft carbonation, bitter, long finish,
3.8 Bottle (500 ml). Dark brown with a medium beige head and good lacing. Aroma is of smoke (more fire than meaty smoke), vegetal coffee, dark chocolate, peated notes, wood and light citrus notes. Taste is of peated malt, smoked malt, wood, dark chocolate and light bitter finish. Medium/full body. Medium/good carbonation. Roasted presence mouthfeel is still velvety. Good smoked Stout. Well balanced and enjoyable. Well done.
4.0 500 ml bottle. Pours an orange tinted black with a beige head. Aroma is coffee, smoked, peat, meat. Flavor is coffee, earth, boozey, dark chocolate, herbal. Finish is strongly smoked, peaty, boozey, coffeeish.Lingering smoke, coffee, booze. Full body, velvety mouthfeel, weak carbonation.
3.7 Pours a really really dark brown and is topped by a thin beige head that receeds into a ring that leaves OK lacing. Aroma is indeed smoky, but also woody and a little vegetal (someone said green coffee beans, I concur). Taste is highly roasted and no real sweetness is perceived. Flavors of hickory, coffee, slight green peppers. None of the ashy character I despise in some stouts. Body is full, carbonation moderate. The smoke gets a bit tiresome as you reach the middle of the bottle but that might be just me. Nice one!
3.8 Bottle. Pours black with small tan head. Whiskey is prevalent in the nose - also charcoal, burnt wood. Taste is whiskey, roasted malt, smoke...boozy but well balanced. A nice beer.

Vanille. Sucré. Bien fumé. Jambon fumé. Fine amertume qui évolue jusqu'en finale pour finir sèche et torréfié. Très bien fait.

4.0 Botted gift from Abemorsten. Pours pitch black with a small tanned head. Aroma of roastes malts, liquorice, dark chocolate and weak smoke. Taste is more smoky than suggested by the aroma, smooth mouthfeel, well balanced between malty sweetness and roasty/smoked bitterness, good one.
3.6 The initially generous dense beige foam slowly diminishes to nothingness atop the clear/filtered cola brown pour. Fairly complex aroma with both chocolate and coffee aromas to the foreground and a broad range of more subtle nuances, from jammy blackberries/blackcurrant to trace iodine, leathery, coal smoke. Despite the relatively pale colour for a stout, there is more than a trace of roast in here, mostly in the form of coffee overtones and this brings forth a fair bit of acidity which acts, together with the smoke, as a counterpoint to the healthy dose of residual sugars bathing in here. This brings about a thicker than average mouthfeel which is accompanied by a warmer than expected general presence - I suppose I would have guessed it near 9% if blind-tested. In the end, it’s impactful and bigger than the sum of its parts, with fair complexity. On its own, it feels a bit rough edged to me, playing on many fronts at once and lacking focus, but I imagine its smokey, charry, warming character would do marvels with meats from the grill.
(Rating #5181)
