Yards General Washington's Tavern Porter

Yards General Washington's Tavern Porter

Detailed in a letter from the General to his officers during the war, Washington’s recipe employed molasses to aid fermentation and give rich caramel notes to this robust, roasty ale. The recipe reflected his admiration for Philadelphia-style porters, especially those brewed by Robert Hare (whose original brewery stood just blocks from where ours is now). Our Tavern Porter, inspired by Washington’s, is dark, smooth, and complex with just a hint of dried fruit in the finish

3.5 A good strong porter offering. The molasses adds a pleasant dark, dank sweetness to a malty porter. looks good in the poor.
3.3 Never rated until now, but I have enjoyed this one for years. True to the Porter style, it's not heavy like a stout, but has a dark hue. The head quickly fades with a thin lacing present. Roasted malts and dried fruit flavor hits with a slightly bitter bite at the finish. Pretty cool history to this beer, too. Cheers!
3.9 With mark and Abby cooking Christmas dinner. Pours opaque jet black with half finger tan head. Label is amazing and I adore the concept. Nose is strong porter with coffee and chocolate with toasty malts. Taste follows with tons of chocolate and coffee/dark malt. Some (but not much) sweetness and medium bitterness. Little bit of dark cherry at the end. Palate is medium and it goes down easy - esp for 7% Overall, this is an excellent porter. Super chocolatey, but easy drinking. I’d buy this again in a heartbeat + the concept is amazing!!
4.6 This is one of the smoothest porters I have tried. I really enjoy this Porter from Yards. Give it a try and I am sure you will too.
3.7 I think those who ranked it highly here pretty much nailed it. One important thing I would add is that I found it much, much better once I kept it stored on the underground basement's floor rather than chilled in the fridge. Much larger head and far better body and flavor at that temperature. A really nice Porter for the price.
3.4 Pour from 12oz bottle. Super lovely with a dark color and foamy head. Tastes of molasses with a hint of coffee.
3.1 355ml bottle. Dakr brown pour with a light tan head. Aroma is sweet and raisiny, roasted malt. Flavor is sweet and raisiny, like a dry kvass.
3.9 Robust and full bodied. Very enjoyable porter. Almost a sweet stout. Toast no harshness and enjoyable. Nice head.
2.8 Bitter, with aftertaste. 7% ABV well hidden. Like the Presidential series and the labeling. Regardless, not good enough to drink again. Sorry George...
3.5 Dark mahogany brown with a delicate one-finger head and nice lace. Aromas of roasted malt, cocoa powder, molasses and anise. Taste is similar with the roasted malt, and cocoa accompanied by leather, licorice, roasted coffee and dark fruit. Medium body, low carbonation, creamy mouthfeel and a dry finish.
3.9 Rich garnet brown, thin light brown head. Strong caramel aroma, vanilla-coffee notes, almost earthy. Smooth cocoa vanilla hops flavors. Fairly light mouthfeel.
3.3 Bottle. Hazy brown color with a khaki head and nice lacing. Aroma and flavor were coffee, caramel, roasted malt and some chocolate. As it warms, I get some dark fruit. Not my favorite porter but I can drink it. Average
4.2 Bottle from Total Wine in Gainesville, VA Aroma: caramel, roasty, molasses Appearance: deep bown with a tan head Taste: medium sweetness, medium bitterness, Palate: medium body, creamy, average carbonation, long finish, Tasty
3.6 I poured it from the bottle into a glass. It pours dark brown and black with a tan head and lacing. The aroma is coffee and fruit. The taste is coffee, chocolate, vanilla and tobacco. It’s smooth and creamy with a nice balance of bitterness and subtle sweetness. This is a nice porter and worthy of having George Washington’s picture on it.
3.1 Poured dark cherry brown - like a cherry cola; medium head with multi-sized bubbles. Caramel raisins, sweet and malty, (very) lightly roast coffee. Body was a little on the thinner side. Finished with some sourness.
4.1 Bottle. Well finished porter. Sweet aroma, smooth palate. Clean finish. No off flavors. Not punchy or overly boozy. Not a centerpiece offering, in that it won’t win awards for stand-out flavor, but very smooth and drinkable, but likely much better for regular drinking instead of a tasting session.
3.6 Poured from 12 oz. bottle. Opaque (except around edges), dark rusty brown with a fine, tan head and good lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, cocoa, molasses and licorice. Taste of roasted malt, leather, cocoa, licorice, roasted coffee and a little dried fruit. Medium/full body and medium/low carbonation. Pretty interesting, roasty and complex porter.
3.2 Nice Porter, not too overpowering with notes of oatmeal, a little light on the side for my taste however that should be a given as it is advertised as using George Washington's recipe from almost 250 years ago.
3.7 On tap at the brewery. Pours a very dark brown with small beige head that lasts. The aroma is strong roast and cocoa. Slick mouth, chocolate, roast, licorice, light finish, very good.
4.2 B. Pours a clear brown color with khaki head. Dried fruit aromas and flavors
4.0 Black liquid with rimming brown head; aroma is mild malt chocolate roast ; flava is roasty malt tangy and sweet chocolate and balanced; finishes dry roasty mildly tangy
4.1 Definitely one of the better porters I’ve had in a long time. I sampled this on draft at the City Tavern in Philly. The beer poured a black color with a light tan head. There was plenty of beautiful lacing happening inside the glass. The nose featured some caramel, vanilla, chocolate, roasted barley and a slight hint of sweet alcohol. The body was perfectly drinkable and smooth, with flavors of chocolate, cream, vanilla, caramel, fruit, very light hops, toasted bread and a hint of booze.
3.3 Dark with some red, some head. Nose is toasty, molasses, a bit of fruit. Taste is roasty, sweet malt, some fruit and coffee on the finish. Very little carbonation. It's ok.
3.7 Pours black with a one finger tan head with nice lacing. Aroma is of roasted malts, coffee, chocolate, dried fruits, molasses, caramel, and sweet malts. Taste is pretty similar to the aroma. Has a medium body with a creamy mouthfeel and a mostly sweet, medium finish. Overall, a pretty nice porter that is easy drinking, smooth, and sessionable for the style.
3.1 ポーター 香ばし苦くて、あまい。
3.6 Had at City Tavern in Philly. Pours dark brown from bottle. Pretty mild and drinkable porter - some roasted malts and hops. Good.
3.5 From a 12 oz bottle. Pours a clear cola with a tan head. Malty nose. Flavors of licorice and leather. Slightly bitter roasted finish.
3.8 Bottle to shaker glass. Pours black, red hues when held to strong light. One finger off white silky head. Moderate lacing but nice retention. Aroma of roasted malts and dark chocolate. Taste is nicely balanced, sweet malts with an even bitterness. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, creamy mouth feel. Finishes long and smoky. Tasting notes of burnt sugars, dark roasted coffee and malts, vanilla, dark chocolate and toffee. A very nice and complex porter!
3.6 Draft in shaker, dark brown with tan head. Sweet, malty start, long slightly bitter finish.
