Yeastie Boys Digital IPA (pre-2015, 7% version)

Yeastie Boys Digital IPA (pre-2015, 7% version)

Brewed initially for export to USA.
A lmited amount of kegs were released in NZ as Motueka Warrior (as a part of the annual Motueka/Yakima collaboration with Liberty Brewing)

The beer was then brewed for NZ, Aus and Italy under the Digital IPA label. It will be available throughout the southern hemisphere summer of 2011.

NZ Bottle:

This limited-release India Pale Ale (IPA) is an aggressive wee beast that is dedicated to our friend Joseph Wood of Liberty Brewing and to all those hopheads who love drinking IPA day in, day out.

Just as the term digital is all about zeroes and ones, the concept of IPA is all about malts and hops. Enjoy the rich golden malt backbone of Digital while you can... then feel it closing in as the fruity Motueka-grown hops dominate your palate and don’t ever fade away.

IPA as it should be.

This ale is open source - you may not be able to download the beer itself but feel free to grab the recipe at www.yeastieboys.co.nz.

3.8 From a bottle in Wellington. Decent IPA, classical kiwi hops. Not too long finish but citrous and refreshing
3.7 Surprisingly weak aroma, yet a full hoppy taste. Normally IPA are the other way round, so was great to have a strong taste. Tropical fruit and spruce, cloudy pour, light carbonation. Long finish
3.6 330ml bottle at Beer Station, Xiamen. Pours hazy yellow brown with a thin white head. Aroma of pine and malt. Bitter finish.
3.4 Bottle from The Globe, Hong Kong, poured into a tulip glass. Cloudy muddy orange colour with a small head which quickly dissipates. Fruity aroma - pine, grapefruit and some honey. Palate is very fruity wit some malt and hops - grapefruit, peach, caramel and pine. Malt and alcohol backbone. Heavy, but a good recommendation from the friendly barstaff.
3.2 22.01.2015, 0,33l bottle @ home: Small shortlasting head. Aroma is slightly sweet fruity, rubber, tropical fruits, winegum, moss, hops, pine needles, sap, strawberry, dried fruits, grass. Taste is dry concentrated grassy, leafs, hops, grass, pine needles, weeds, alcohol, moss, bark, light malts, minerals, sap. Longlasting bitterness, dry mouthfeel. Fair enough.
3.5 Bottle from beer:shop St Albans. a good beer that pours orange in colour pinaple and peach on the aroma. Grassy and strong peach on the taste very bitter all the way through with a big bitter finish a nice one that i would like to try on tap
2.6 Bottle from Vinmonopolet in Valkendorfsgate, Bergen. Pours a cloudy brown-orange body with a small, bubbly head. Aroma is rose water, diacetyl, nuts, honey, grass, straw and hints of pine and grapefruit. Taste is grass, peaches, passion fruit, pine, resin, straw, bready malts and hints of herbs, tomato plant and caramel. Lingering bitterness. Medium body and carbonation. Quite nice, but the diacetyl (or whatever it is that I detect as diacetyl, anyhow) in the aroma plus a lackluster appearance draws down the overall impression a bit. Fair enough all in all, but I was hoping for more from the debut beer from a brewery with just about the coolest name ever. :-D
3.2 Bottle from Vika enjoyed at home Pours dark copper, very hazy, with a thin beige head. Smell of citrus, grapefruit, some spices and caramel malts - sadly i think this bottle may be a bit old, the aromas is not overwhelming. Moderate sweet, citrus and zests, quite clean, medium bitter, spicy with a nice resin tail. Not sure why this bottles was sendt to Norway...... they’re too old
3.3 Bottle sample at a tasting at Dancing Camel Florentin. Thanks Tom L. Pours orange with a beige head, aroma of honey, orange, tangerine, flavor is bitter with orange and alcohol, medium bodied.
2.4 330ml bottle from Hippo Beers. Dark amber brown, not much head. Sweet fruity malt aroma and flavour. Bitter sweet aftertaste. A bit watery. More an amber ale than a pale ale. Too sweet & malty for me.
4.1 Keg at the hanging bat. Pours amber, nose is sweet toffee, tropical fruit, taste is juicy mango, pineapple.
4.0 bottle , liquorking, cromwell, 2months past sell by date. average nose quite resiny and a bit roasted pineappley, flavour quite rich and more beery than lager/pilsner which is good, excellent palate weight with the 7% and really quite a punchy little beer, finishes good nice and rich. old school IPA with plenty of booze weight and soft beery palate
4.0 Great beer, very strong and packing in punch. Not sure I could drink it all night, couldn’t afford to anyway. But a couple of these when sitting in a comfy chair after a hard days slog is no bad thing.
3.8 Bottle shared by Chris in Tahoe. Pours copper with with head. Big hop bitterness wig a clean dry finish
3.8 011101100110010101110010011110010010000001101000011011110111000001110000011110010010110000100000011000010110110001101101011011110111001101110100001000000110010001110010011110010010110000100000011011100110111101110100001000000110001001100001011001000000110100001010 - or in English very hoppy, almost dry, not bad. For a beer that they give you the recepie for this would be a cracking try at home home brew. I thought it lacked a finish is all. Nice though light florals, nice bitterness, sweet enough without being cloying and very drinkable.
2.9 "english style leaning with the malt balance. not really my thing. i dog the hops used, spicy and floral, but the beer is too malty for what i like in the style.
2.8 Bottle sample at a tasting at Dancing Camel Florentin. Thanks Tom L. Slightly hazy deep golden-orange. Aroma of stale fruity hops. Flavor has light malt sweetness, a bit of honey and somewhat stale fruity hops. Medium-bodied. Might be good when fresher, hope to try again.
3.1 Very hazy golden with a white head. Aroma is quite hoppy. Citrus, caramel malts, grapefruit, wood, a bit floral. Thiner than expected but a decent medium body. Flavor is floral, citrus, orange, light candied malt. A decent IPA but I don’t see the big draw with this one.
3.6 Poured from a bottle into a pint glass a light yellow with a nice white head. Aroma is hoppy citrus sweetness. Flavor is juicy sweet with some mild bitterness. Less hoppy than the average IPA yet quite doable. Very smooth & palatable. Would like a second bottle. Please.
4.0 From a 330ml bottle on 10/8/2014. Pours a murky golden with a mall head. Has a pleasant aroma featuring lots of caramel malt and fruity hops. Taste wise, it’s quite malt forward, with lots a caramel and a touch of toffee. There’s a fair bit of sweet tropical and stone fruit in there, leading to a firm, satisfying hop bitterness at the back. Has a fullish body and lively carbonation. Not typically US in style, but still very flavoursome, All up, another good’n from Yeastie Boys.
3.4 Tea grain bread fruity nz hops. Golden pour thin head. Flavors of grain butter. Fruity nz hops. Tea and grain. Lingering fruity Flavors but with weird tea.
3.2 From Sips. Translucent dark orange-copper with creamy looking off-white head. Smells of overripe pineapple, bubblegum/slightly artificial sweetness, hop. Tastes of crisp malt, hop, some soap and the same bubblegum, a little spice in the finish. Body is a little light, almost frothy. Sweetness is not cloying but quite odd; other flavours not big enough to be that interesting.
3.2 Bottle from Sips at home. Hazy dark orange amber pour with dense head and lasting lacing. Aroma is surprisingly candy sweet. Like hops and donuts - like a pineapple that's been sitting out. Interesting. Taste is pleasantly fruity hops but with some underlying tanginess that's not that good - again an overripe fruit flavor. Probably the best Yeastie Boys I've had but have been a bit let down overall by the 3 offerings available in HK at the moment.
3.5 From 330 ml bottle. Pours a clear honey-amber with a small white head and vigorous carbonation. Aromas of toffee, baking bread, peaches, white wine and flowers. Taste starts out with some sweet caramel and peach before a zesty grapefruit bitterness in the mid-palate. Falls away a bit after that but there’s a touch of fresh white grapes at the back end. Clean finish with a lightly spicy aftertaste. Not bad but a little out of whack.
2.4 This beer is a light amber colour with a very small short lived head. It smells of citrus and caramel. The taste is a little off. Just saw it is 3 months pad the best before date. Maybe that's it. Not great.
4.0 OK this is one of those ratings... bought this in Hong Kong but there was as much barnyard (and I mucked for a year in my late teens so I know more than I’d rather admit) as hops in the nose, lots of rustic barnyard there, this is as much Saison Dupont as IPA (looking over the recent and top ratings I don’t think that’s the intention or regular taste). I am therefore drinking a different beer than intended, with pineapple and earth and barnyard in the flavour, but I love it. 4.0. Beer of life, dude.
3.8 Bottle from Whole Foods. Pours clear golden with a small white head that has decent retention. The aroma is a powerhouse of pineapple and mango.. a touch of honey, a bit floral. Really inviting juicy nose. The taste on this is fruity as it gets. Pineapple, peach, mango, apple juice, and a bit of sweet honey. This is very good but a bit over the top on the sweetness.
3.2 12 ounce bottle. Minimal foam on this clear golden beer. Served at 42.9F which is too cold. First sniff is of clover honey. I also taste that honey. It is along with floral notes and some citrus, but not a lot. Cereal and grain. Not a lot of excitement.
4.0 Bottle: Clear, amber with a small, off-white head. Semi-tropical fruits,...soft/sweet aroma. Taste is mild, sweet fruit....very malty. Light fruit rind bittering. A very nice, tropical, smooth IPA. Extremely Tasty.
3.6 Clear golden color, slightly cloudy, quickly disappearing white head. Big fruity, sweet smell (apricots, pineapple, grapefruit) that fades away as the beer warms up leaving space for some malts and caramel. Taste is again quite fruity with honey-like sweetness, citrus and a not too heavy dry final bitterness. Once again the label is misleading describing this beer as "aggressive".
