Yeastie Boys Pot Kettle Black

Yeastie Boys Pot Kettle Black

Can, bottle, and keg: Filtered
South Pacific Porter

Launched 2008 as a 5.2% abv beer. Changed to 6% in 2009.

Brewed in NZ (at Urbanaut) and UK (West Berkshire).

A juxtaposition of styles: fresh and hoppy, yet dark and rich. Mindbendingly delicious.

2009 release information:

Winter 2009 sees the return of Yeastie Boys much loved debut beer - New Zealand’s original ’Black IPA’. This year’s vintage is built upon the same malt base as the original but has fired up the ’chocolate and orange character’ with more NZ Cascade hops and a zesty fistful (or 10) of imported Styrian Goldings. At 6.0%abv and 50ibu it is rich, hoppy and way too drinkable.

2008 release information:

The first seasonal release from the newest kids on the local craft beer block. ’Pot Kettle Black’ is an unusually hoppy rich and robust porter balancing the delectable dark malt flavours of traditional porter with fruity hop characteristics usually associated with modern craft pale ales. The result is a rare beer indeed: moreish, nutritious and delicious.

Tech info: ABV = 5.2%, OG = 1061, IBU = 47.

Ingredients: Malt: NZ Pale Malt, Melanoiden Malt, Crystal 55L, Pale Chocolate, Black Patent Malt. Hops: Nelson Sauvin, New Zealand Styrian, New Zealand Cascade (organic, to please the brewing gods).

3.4 Can. Pour black with lots of whitehead. Color is dark brown. Aroma of hoppy tropical fruits apricot. Taste mix of malty, dark chocolate, not porter sweet at all, quite strong bitterness, mouthfeel hard to describe - thick bitter and prominent piney finish. Body is medium-thick.
4.0 6.0% almost black in colour with a good head, a sweet aroma, with a very good licorice porter taste.
3.5 Can. Pours cloudy coffee brown with stable beige head. Clear aroma of hops, with notes of hops and touches of yeast and citrus. Bitter and roasty flavour with notes of citrus and touches of yeast and some malty notes. Bitter and acidic aftertaste with roasty notes.mDecent, but a Black IPA, not a Porter :-)
3.6 Can, 6.0%. OK piney hop aroma. Very dark brown colour, seems muddy. Good stable light brown head. The flavour is roasted and fruity with some grapefruit and a faint liquorice note in the finish.
3.3 Pours dirty reddy brown, tan head. Aroma is roasted malt, dark fruits and cinder toffee. Flavour is sticky toffee, dried plum and molasses. Light, but drinkable.
3.6 Can. Dark brown colour, with light foamy mocha head. Roasted malts, chocolate, some brown sugar. Medium body. Smooth finish. Solidly drinkable porter.
3.6 Lata. A South Pacific Porter..... Brwed on license in England. Deep dark brown colour, medium light brownish head. Soft sweet roasty malty aroma with chcolate and dark fruits. Ok palate. Flavour is soft with roasted malt, chocolate, dark fruits and some some spice notes. Soft porter with a good hop bitterness reminding me of a BIPA.
2.4 Aroma : Medium roasted chocolate Malt. Lots of citrus some of which is a tad sour; grapfruit, bitter orange, pine and with a burnt woody/ashy note. Taste : Pretty much as aroma. There's a sweet malty chocolate touch with a smoky dryness & a sourish citrus finish which doesn't quite mesh for me!
3.6 Smooth and somewhat hoppy porter with dark malt, subtle grapefruit and some dark chocolate.
3.7 Copenhagen 2/2 2020. 33 cl can from Kihoskh, Søndre Boulevard, Kbh. V. Black can with small white symbols. Pine trees, pots, bows and arrows and so on. They call it a “South Pacific Porter”. Pours opaque, dark brown with a big light beige head. Settles as thin layer of foam just covering the surface of the beer. Clinging to the sides of the glass. Substantial lacing. Aroma is medium intense, sweetish, roasted and with spicy, bitter edge. Roasted dark malts, bitter dark chocolate, tobacco. Lighter odor of tart berries and citrus fruit. Medium strong carbonation. Medium thick, smooth, soft texture. Flavor is medium sweet followed by a stronger citric bitterness. Aftertaste is citric and bitter. Lingers for a while. Dry finish. The nose Reminds me of a porter but the Flavor is full brown Black IPA. Good one from Down under.
3.6 A really enjoyable porter. Has the taste of Dark IPA , but the aroma of a porter and demands a second, delicious serving.
4.2 Growler from Liquor Land Timaru. Pours dark copper, a bit of transparency. Aroma of coffee and cream. Taste is piney, bitter hops, toasted malts and menthol. Light body. Beautifully balanced. A bit of cross between a black ipa and a porter. Delicious.
3.0 Beautiful smell of chocolate. Rich and warm. Unfortunately, the finish is a little too bitter in my opinion.
3.5 BB 07/2020. From a can poured an opaque black (clear mahogany under strong light) with a huge light tan open foam head that retained very well and laced OK. Carbonation high, lively and fine to medium. Aroma of rich dark chocolate, coffee and piney hops; sweeter than bitter. Taste moderate to strong of smoke and roasted malts with moderate coffee bitterness; rich and sweet with a malty balance; low hops bitterness. Medium body. Smooth with a lingering smokiness. Different.
3.8 Blik. Geur is ipa achtig.Cremeachtig.niet echt moutig, meer smaak door hop. Chocolade mout. Licht in alcohol
4.1 Can at the Chiltern Taps, High Wycombe. Brown-black with a beige head and a moderate fizz. Tropical notes and treacle up front; on drinking more this gave way to roasted malt, plain chocolate, pine, earth and espresso, although there's always a hint of tropical-ness dancing in the background. Moderate toasty treacle bitterness to finish. Very enjoyable beer, made me happy!
3.9 Opaque black with thick foamy tan head Aroma is strong spicy hoppy notes with hints of roastiness Flava is tangy roasty slightly hoppy and bitter Feels light with lively fizzy foaminess Finishes dry tangy roasty and moderately bitter
4.0 Nutty Porter. Smells like a port should do. Flavours are nuts, coffee and smokiness. Solid beer but not one of the best!
3.0 Hoppy taste but with a distinct porter finish, and a hint of coffee. Pours dark with a reasonably thick lasting head. More IPA than porter, especially on the nose.
3.8 330ml bottle share. Dark brown beer with a big, offwhite head. Aroma of roasted malt, mild coffee and big piney hops. Soft palate. Cocoa, vanilla and bitter notes in the flavour.
3.0 Dark brown black colour. Smokey malt choc flavour. Malt bitter smooth palate and choc finish.
3.4 Aroma: Medium-high citrus, oranges. Medium pine. Medium ash, burnt. Appearance: Opaque black body. Small, brown body. Small bubbles. Flavour: Medium citrus, grapefruit, orange. Medium-high bitterness. Dry finish with citrus, pine. Mouthfeel: Medium body. Medium carbonation. Overall: Good IPA notes, with the hint of darkness. The ash on the aroma is not pleasant, but the flavour is very nice. 330 ml can, poured.
3.3 Can @ Friends/Dr. yeast. 3.1 $6 can from Craft Cartel. BB Jun/19, drank 24/Oct/18. Appearance: Black body. Beige head. 3 Aroma: Orange hops, roast malt. 7 T: Bitter orange, roast malt, piercing bitterness. 6 P: The body is the weakest link. Low carbonation (ok) but very thin. 2 O: Decent but the store's delivery may be old. 13
3.2 Bottle from Booths Supermarket, Media City. Very dark brown with a frothy off-white head. Much more a Black IPA in taste than the porter label on its bottle. Hoppy and fruity, there's a low fusion with dark malts. Its strength is evident but not a huge factor on taste or flavour.
3.8 Bottle Aroma-caramel, chocolate, coffee, Appearance-black, hazy, tan foam, Taste-light sweetness, lightly bitter, lightly sour, Palate-medium body, slick feel, lively, long finish, Overall-very good
4.4 Can from Tesco. Pours deep brown-black with stone coloured deep head. Aroma rich with espresso, grain and dough. Slight charcoal after taste.
3.0 Can: Poured pitch black with two finger tan head. Aroma is light roasted malt. Taste is ash tray burnt malts, lingering bitterness. Not sure this can isn’t off.
