3.8 500 ml bottle bought at Gorgeous Wine & Cigar in Yuen Long. Looks: Clear, deep ruby brown colour with faint trace of yeast particles; Three finger head with crumpety beige foam which last for 3 minutes; Very good sticky lacing with near zero carbonation. Aroma: Very fragrant dark malt, with pretty strong roastyness, strong caramel, sticky toffee, hot chocolate, coffee, rich cream, floral, sugar, light spices, dry bread, yeast, and fair grass. Very comfy! Taste: Mid to light sweet dark malt, with strong metallic, strong roastyness, caramel, burnt toffee, toast, dark chocolate, black coffee, cream, floral, fair molasses, strong earth, dark bread, yeast, lemon, strong bitter hops and strawy grass. Body: Medium body, Thick and creamy palate. Mouth Feel: Good dark maltyness in a rich and creamy background, with strong oat-influenced smoothness. Roasty, quite toasty burnt characters (toffee, dark bread) came through, with good dark chocolate and fair dark coffee well-complemented by light cream and light sweetness. Flowery, earthy strawy hops with lemon to round. Very nice! Hoppiness: Light spices, floral and fair grass in nose. Earth, floral, lemon and strawy grass in taste; Bitterness - burnt malt and hops - is quite strong for a lasting, close to high astringent bitter-sweet dark malt finish. After Taste: Dry. Roasty grassy and bitter to mouth. Comments: Thos one may not be as colorful as Young’s Double Chocolate Stout, but it has a delicate hot chocolate aroma, roast malty taste with expressive oat creaminess toasty bitterness and strong earthy bitter hops. Fulfilling, hoppy yet easy to drink. Definitely a good one to enjoy!
3.8 Bottle from Tallinna Kaubamaja. As London Stout. Pours brown with steady yellow-beige head. Lovely roasty aroma, nearing burnt and ashy, some sourish berries and black bread crust. Tastes roasty and mellow sweet with a bitter and sour berry layer. Velvety soft mouthfeel, carbonation with only the tiniest prickliness, body light to medium. Absolutely beautiful.
3.7 500ml bottle as "London Stout" 5.2% abv. Pitch black color. Medium size, brownish-yellow head, stays. Roast, spicy hops, oatmeal, grainy in aroma. Nice mellow roast, herbal hops, some nuttiness and smooth silky milky tones in taste. Smooth and silky roast with some nuts in aftertaste. Soft carbonation. Goes down very easy. Slight metallic hops in late aftertaste. Brilliant stout!
3.7 Bottle as Young’s London Stout (5.2%). Typical dark body with a medium tall creamy head. Pleasant roasty aroma with plenty of oat roast. Smooth oaty taste with some milky sweetness. Nice hoppy/roasty finish. A solid classic stout, not much that needs describing here.
3.6 Good (but not exceptional) execution of a nice style. So dark and roasty that it tastes more of coal than of coffee or chocolate. I don’t find it as creamy as advertised, body is no more than average for the style. Pleasant to drink!
3.5 That was a pleasant surprise. Dry, creamy nature like Guinness, maybe a bit more pronounced roast, but still highly drinkable.
3.5 0,5 l bottle. Pours dark ruby red with a good finger of tan, thick lasting head. Aroma of roasted malts, light coffee and chocolate, some dried fruit and a bit of grassy hops. Strong flavor of roasted malts, complemented by coffee, chocolate, sweet caramel. Light bitterness. Body is light to medium, not as creamy as some other oatmeal stouts with average carbonation. Lacing is superb. Nice, very drinkable stout.
3.7 Bottle, 500ml. Opaque dark brown with a creamy light brown head. Aromas of caramel, biscuits, spices. Medium to full bodied, moderate to fizzy carbonation. Smooth and creamy. Medium sweet, medium bitter. Roasted and spicy flavors into an astringent finish. Very drinkable and pleasant.
3.6 Bottle, 500ml. A dark beer with a red hue and a medium size brown head. Aroma is of chocolate, coffee and oatmeal. Taste is bitter, more than the double chocolate. Acidic finish with a dark chocolate aftertaste (not a very sweet one). Robust bodied with some carbonation. Nice, but I prefer the Double Chocolate.
2.8 Bottle, 500 ml, courtesy of JFK10000. Shared with him and Miro. Pours black, creamy beige head. Light roastiness, malt, bit of chocolate. Sweetish with dry finish. Also watery, and bit bland, very simple brew.
3.2 Jun ’16. A 0.5 l bottle, as London Stout, 5.2% ABV, same label as the other one listed here at 4.3%, this one doesn’t mention oats except in the ingredients. It poured a very dark reddish, almost black body with medium sized light brown head. Coffee, rye, strong roasted malt aroma. Flavor was bitterish, lighter roasted, but still coffee-driven with some finer, more creamy coffee, and chicory. Thin but with long coffee bitterish finish. Quite simple but fine. I’m almost sure this is different than the oatmeal stout, this has no characteristics of one.
3.5 Pours black with medium off-white head. Aroma is burned bread, light sweetness, raisins, caramel, some spices, some grass. Taste is a bit watery, coffee, hops, softness, oats, some other grains. Light creamy. Nice drinkable beer!
3.5 Bottle. Pours dark brown with pale brown sticky head. Aroma: roasted, chocolate, cold coffee, hay. Taste: sourish, roasted used coffee powder, bitter chocolate, oat. Not bad for a such a low alcohol. Medium body. Bitterish finish.
3.5 Bouteille. [notes 2006]
4.0 Rated from notes. Pours black from the bottle with a wonderful creamy head that lingers and lingers. Strong chocolate aroma with a hint of fruit liqueur. Taste is rich roasted malt, chocolate, and oatmeal. Very rich and quite sweet, but still balanced enough to drink in relative quantity. Excellent stuff.
3.5 Bottle, 0.50l. Pours pitch black with medium soapy light brown head and good lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee, oats and grass. Taste starts light sweet grainy and coffeeish, follows by bitter chocolate and herbs, maybe some licorice, mouthfeel is dry, while finish is mild bitter. Medium body, creamy texture and soft carbonation in palate. Good and smooth...
3.6 Dark brown, almost black opaque colour with creamy light brown head. Aroma without notice of an alcohol, but with notice of toffee, milk chocolate, coffee. Taste is similar: with slight or poor notice of an alcohol, and dominant notes of oat, milk chocolate and toffee. You can detect also little roasted. Malt sweetness is medium, also hop bitterness. Finish is dry and slightly bitter . Body is mouth-coating.
3.5 Cerveza de color negro con una cabeza de color marrón claro. Aroma a malta tostada con notas de regaliz y malta chocolate. Sabor tostado con toque de café. cerveza muy agradable.
3.5 Old rating. Bottle from Old Town. Solid bready aromas with hints of grain and toasted malt. Full-bodied with a creamy mouthfeel. A heavy beer for sure. Nice sweet grains and toasted malts. Smooth finish.
3.6 Almost black, one finger thick creamy head. Aroma of roast acids, port wine and coffee. Medium body. The taste is dry with notes of coffee, chocolate, some earth. a good one.
3.5 16.9oz bottle (Old Notes)-Pours black with a nice tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, and sweetness. Taste of the same. This medium bodied brew is well balanced and smooth.
3.3 Keg at the riverside. Opaque black coloured pour with a steadfast creamy head. Aroma is soft roast, choc and light berry. Palate is smooth and somewhat creamy. Flavour is milky choc, lactose sugar, soft roast. OK
3.5 "i’m grading this half way between what i’d give the bottle (better) and the can (worse). the flavor is nice, but like a Guiness, when it’s on nitro, it’s too unassuming. kinda boring, but smooth. the flavor comes out a little more in the bottle. the double chocolate, on the other hand, is better in the can...and better period."
3.5 Typical representative of the oatmeal stout style revived by Samuel Smith in the seventies. Loose, irregular, yellowish beige head, colour near black with reddish hue, clear. Strong malty aroma, roasted grains, caramel, coffee, toasted bread, dried plums, candied dates, raisins, subtle spicy hops. Mellow, creamy and velvety palate, very soft, fruity with a gentle, not too sharp roasted bitterness, dryish but not so much as an actual dry stout, long finish with elegant spicy hoppiness, subtle.
3.8 11/7/14 Keg on tap at Moscow Airport, TGI Fridays. Labelled as Youngs London stout 5.2%. Almost black with a creamy white head. Aroma of chocolate and burnt malt. Very smooth.
3.6 Bottle from backlog notes. Pours dark brown to black in color with a medium sized beige head. The aroma and flavor have roasted and sweet malts, chocolate, decent flavor, mild bitterness with good mouthfeel.
3.6 Backlog. On tap at Green Lion Inn. Subtle with the regular hints of coffee and chocolate. A fine beer.
4.8 Draught, Celtic Dolmen - Irish pub in Novosibirsk. Color - dark brown, almost black, is opaque. Foam - abundant, delicate cream ( light beige ) color, fine-grained, dense and very resistant, stick to the walls of the glass. Aroma - cocoa beans, chocolate, coffee and light refreshments grassy notes. Body is not very dense, carbonation is weak, soft carbonation. The taste is very mild, delicate, all the classic ingredients for stout - light black patent malt, dark chocolate, coffee. The aftertaste is long, coffee- burning, somewhat dry. No bitterness and kislosti sweets also virtually none. Taste reminded me Youngs Double Chocolate Stout. Now I am puzzled - how to make a comparative tasting. Understand what is the difference. Just gorgeous Stout! Highly recommended!
