2.9 275 ml (is that all?) bottle at the Prince of Wales, Bromham. Copper colour, little obvious carb or head. Enjoyable caramel malt scent marred by a metallic hint in the aroma. Taste a bit metallic as well, but also bittersweet and well-balanced. Carbonation more obvious in the mouthfeel. Passable, but maybe not the best bottle? I prefer the cask (although I haven’t seen it in 7 or 8 years).
3.2 Bottle in The Bear, Esher. Colour is standard clear amber, medium white head. Nose is caramel, bread, cereal grainy, slight English hop earthiness. Taste is caramel, cereal malt grainy, dryish hop character, touch straw or grass hop character alongside earthiness.
2.9 Bottle @ Calthorpe Arms, London. Clear golden with an off-white head. Aroma is sweet, malty and light hoppy - straw. Flavor is medium sweet and moderate bitter. Sweet finish. 270413
3.2 Bottle. Amber with small offwhite head. Malty with earthy hops. Mild bitterness. Decent.
3.2 Bottle @ The Britannia. The pour’s medium amber with a small head. The nose is brown bread, rich toasty malts aromas, honeyed grain. The taste is slightly hot runny toffee, some caramel-covered haystack, nut bar. Mildly astringent on the finish. Medium body, this is one of those beers that drinks above its ABV. Rich, full. A nice ESB for winter.
3.2 500ml bottle pours a brownish color with a finger of off-white head which leaves some spotty lacing. Aroma is some dark fruits with some citrus and earthy hops. Taste is a fruity and caramel malty sweetness with a citrusy and earthy hop bitterness. Medium bodied with decent carbonation. A decent ESB which is easy to drink and highly recommended.
2.4 Copper orange colour with a white large bubble horrible soapy lasting head. I’m sure the pasturisation is not going to be nice here. Smells of toasted malt, caramel malt and a skunky chamical cardboard staleness from the pasturisation. Medium biscuit oily body. Sweet caramel start with a soft bitter hop dry finish. Very common and average. Some honey sweetness on the aftertaste.
3.2 The label may change but the beer is always a good one. The golden hops come through without overwhelming you like an IPA, and the depth of the beer has more to offer than a simpleton.
4.4 cooked vegetables, barnyard, spruce, cereal, orange, cloudy, frothy, light sweetness, very bitter, lightly sour, full body, thin feel, soft carbonation, long finish, bitter,
2.5 Bottle at Three Kings in London. Noticeable notes of fruity malts, and some bitter hops to balance the body out. Seeing at this was a struggle to finish, I can’t see myself ever trying it again. Plus, 5% = strong? I dont think so, but it did taste stronger.
3.2 Surprisingly light character, malty with hints of spice and caramel, fairly sweet. Nice enough.
4.0 Used to have quite a bit of this at Gingers Ale house. Nice English ESB and nicely balanced. Serving: Bottle and tap
3.4 Pours amber, almost copper in the glass. Nose and taste of malts, toasted malts, caramel and some hop bitterness. Rated 7/20/2000
3.1 Ram Rod Ale--ESB--16.9 oz. Bottle. 1997-1999 Release. 5.5% ABV. (3.75 / 5.0) Clear copper color. Malty aroma with hop accents. Smooth crisp malty body with toasted flavor minimal sweetness and light texture. Fruit character develops towards end along with smooth hop spice. Sampled 5/25/1999. 2001 Release. 5.00% ABV. (4.0 / 5.0) Clear thin copper red color. Light hop toasted doughy front. Rich thin London pale ale malt ESB like body. Light toasted earthy caramel doughy fruit notes. Dry mild hop end. Light white lace. Crisp. Sampled 6/22/2001.
2.1 Bottle @ pre-GBBF shindig, August 2009. Old bottle, best before August 2001, presumably from the Silk Shropshire Stash. Darkish amber colour. Nothing but cardboard in the aroma. Less cardboard but more tin in the flavour. Well past it. Not entirely undrinkable. Wouldn’t expect this to be a beer for aging and it wasn’t. Although I now see I rated it higher at this age than Mes did when fresh. Flagged for re-rate anyway.

3.2 Bottle at The New Wheatsheaf, Borough. Given it a good 30 mins to open up. Mid brown lasting beige head. Spicy aroma. Some malt, some hop, soe yeast all on aroma. Bit of pukie malt in mouth but the spicy hop finish is decent enough. Good hop sting. Bit of syrup for a 5% beer. Thought it was stronger. Had to decant it to get rid of some of the bottled gas. Some fresh raisin. OK.
1.8 Bottle 50cl. Unlear medium orange amber color with a small to average, fizzy, fair lacing, mostly diminishing, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, caramel, oxidide malt, old celler, cardboard. Flavor is moderate sweet with a average duration. Body is light to medium, texture is watery, carbonation is soft to flat. [20090802]
3.3 A good solid Bitter. Doesn’t do anything special, but has a good balance between malt profile and hop body. Easy drinking. Would love to have this on tap.
3.1 275ml bottle. Deep orange to ruby in colour, murky and hazy with no head, only a ring of white bubbles around the edge of the glass. Strong fruity aroma of peaches and apricots with some hop undercurrents. Strong bodied with a good texture and mouthfeel and nice aftertaste.
3.4 Not bad at all. A classic bitter style with balls. Dark apricot in colour with a very thin head. Very clear. Nose is fairly traditional but shows a slighly cooked / heavy malt note. Caramel, toffee and mild fruits drive the flavour. lots of malts here and I couldn’t really pick up much in the hop department. Late bitter kick.
3.1 (Draught at Bishops Arms, Västerås) On March 16, 2005 Clear golden to amber color, medium off-white head. Malty sweet and caramel scent. Taste is similar to the smell. Smooth mouthfeel, medium bitterness.
2.2 Good head on misty brown pour,ample carbonation,aroma chocolate,malt,caramel.Flavour ceisp caramel,hop at first,light malt,chocolate weak,now a taste of bitter or salted cocoa.not really a winner.Finish bitter,bad.
3.0 Pale amber body with a decent white head. Hops mainly on the nose to me, grapefruity, thin in body and the bitterness is delightful although a 275ml bottle just wasn’t enough for me.
1.9 A Mes rate: Bottle from the Queens in Primrose Hill. Amber gold with a decent white head. Full on rusty metal aroma with some slight tobacco. Malty, lager-like flavour with some light wheaty hints. Surprising, no, startling medicinal and metallic finish. Gorgeous... no wait... FAIL!
3.1 Bottle poured a dark brown color with a creamy beige head. Sweet malt aroma with some hop bitterness. Good balance between the malt and hops in the flavor as well. Decent, but I would easily choose a Fuller’s ESB over this one.
2.9 This was an interesting beer that changed its character as it warmed. Initially, a metallic flavor jumped out, which then gave way to a malty aura. As the beer grew warmer, a tart grape flavor predominated.
3.4 Bottle - Slightly brown color, medium thickness white head. I taste a good amount of hops, balanced by a smooth malty flavor. Some citrus to this, but mostly just a hoppy flavor. Spicy at the end. A good brew.
3.2 a hazy orange/amber colored beer under a small off white head. aroma is of caramel, toast, and light hops. flavors of caramel and spicy, bitter, citrusy hops. medium bodied and moderately to sharply carbonated. good, but there are much better english bitters out there. for some reason i had a real hard time finding this beer.
