2.4 I was a little disappointed in this one. It poured nicely , but followed up with a bready, acidic flavor.
3.0 Bottled. Amber with white head. Aroma of malt and alcohol. Flavor is caramel, alcohol and a hop bitterness.
2.9 Bottle from Waitrose 2007. Dark ruby with an off white head. Sweet malts with some caramel and a gentle hoppy finish.
2.9 Bottle. Pours dark brown with light reddish hue streaks and a creamy tanned head. Aroma of roasted malt, nuts, chocolate and caramel. The flavour is roasted malt, chocolate, nuts and caramel. Medium bodied and I’m getting some sourness towards the finish. Could be an old bottle which I’m more convinced as I drink this. Would like to try this again when fresh.
3.3 Cola brown pour with a light tan head. The bottle expired in 08 but it is really tasty. Mild malt aroma. Very smooth creamy mouthfeel. Nice malt flavor, everything melds together well. As the beer warms up(started at 45), the maltiness is more noticeable. Nice lacing on the glass.
3.2 500ml bottle from Ryams Party store in port Huron Pours a ruby dark brown with a small tan head no lacing the aroma is caramel malt and hops The taste is strong sweet malts Not bad but not quite i winter warmer
2.7 Bottle 500 ml, Appearance: mid light haze of pale brown , mid tanned creamy with rocks top. 3+ Aroma: straight malty base , light hint of aromatic hop with caramel touch. 6+ Flavor/Palate: medium light bodied. Straight caramel malt with slight hint of spice and bittering. Flat finish. Ordinary.
3.7 Very actice head, great color. Great smooth and rich taste. Malts slight hops. caramel, roasted nuts. Bold but not heavy.
3.4 Bottle pours clear amber with thin white head. Aroma is malt and nuts. First taste is sweet and the malt carries throughouth the whole beer. No real bitterness.
3.7 500 ml bottle bought at College Liquors in Grand Junction, CO. Pours a ruby-brown color with a very large and thick cream colored head. The aroma is very light toasted malts and nutty notes. The flavor is very nice; smooth bursts of fruit, toasted malts, light nutty flavors and a rich and full mouthfeel. Very nice. I love the label and the beer. Easygoing and yet very flavorful. Great. Also, this beer is a few years old, best by September 2007, but still quite good. I’ll re-rate when I get a fresher one.
2.9 not terrible but not much of a warmer. Pretty thin - decent favor - drinkable
2.2 Hazy and dark orange amber with very fine diminishing head. Aroma is lightly roasted crystal malts and small hints of spicyness. Very light body with a light toffee and sugar sweetness that dries out in a long rather bland and dry finish. Overall little dimension for a special seasonal brew and light in body for a real warmer.
3.0 Getting my notebook online. Bottle. Pours a cloudy brown w/o much head. Candy like smells. Taste is very hoppy but not very complex. Nothing outstanding here but a decent beer with some kick.
3.0 Not as warming as one might think. A little thin but some charcoal and caramel over an english bitter. A little sweet. Good but not great.
2.7 Pours a light brown color with a big off white head. Aroma was almost non existent, nothing bad, just not much, there. Flavor was almost the same, very bland, a bit of sweet malts and a tiny hint of some sort of spice. Not too great.
2.8 cherry cola aroma, thick creamy head, dark toffee body. thin, very clean, hardly any body. slight hazelnut hint of hops way back in the finish.
3.1 bottle. Pours amber brown with smallish head. Aroma is sweet malits, bourbon? and hint of sourness. Flavor is caramel, roasted malts but not too strong. Full bodied with dry finish. Not remarkable for its type but a drinkable beer nontheless.
4.0 ..a unique winter ale in that it is not heavy in taste not strength....wouldnt even really call this a winter beer, should be called a brown ale and available year round....very good
3.0 bottle thanks to KJ’s in Lake Dallas, TX. poured a hazy copper color with a beige head and little retention. aroma had good notes of carmel. flavor was sweet with a little bitterness. carbonation was med-high. a little more bubbly than i was expecting out of a winter warmer.
3.2 Large fawn coloured head on a dark red/brown coloured ale, good carbonation.Aroma malted and cooked hops and barley.Flavour, bitter, creamy, oily taste okay, not a lot of other flavours, caramel(smooth)fruit taste may be yeast.Finish, malty, mild bitter, dry, not the best.
3.1 Dark brown body with an almost light tan head. Aroma is a little caramel and some cane sugar. Little thin in the taste, some dark fruit along with the caramel, some roasted notes as well, drinks alright but not a turn on.
3.2 (Bottle). Nice caramel color--perfect color in this style. Overall, a bit thin--doesn’t meet expectations given the color. Less spice and less full than other winter warmers. Bottom line: Would drink anytime, but would only buy on sale.
3.3 Bottle thanks to father. Aroma is ruby malts, raisin darker fruit character, grassy hop. Taste is similar quite rich but yet thinner than i wanted. A nice drink indeed, however more body and it could be quite a beast.
3.4 0.5L bottle pours amber with tan head and moderate lacing. The aroma has a nice barleywine sense to it with tasty dark fruity esters and some vague spice. The taste seems like a very mild barleywine with fruity esters of raisins, boysenberries and sweet cherries. There’s also hints of roasted malts, chocolate malts and vague winter ale spices. Not big and bold enough to be a real winter warmer but a suitable warm up.
3.3 Mmm. Good stuff in that heavy duty bottle. It’s aroma is a bit nutty, maybe some malt seeps through as well. It’s a reddish colored brew, with a minor head. Flavor is great, a little sweet a little malty. Its definitely one of the best ESBs I’ve had to date. It’s rather smooth, very nice.
2.8 This was a fairly decent brew. I always passed on this one but at a beer fest you don’t pass on anything. I liked it, but it’s not something I will ’hunt’ for. Good enough but not great.
3.2 Dec. 2007 - Dark brown pour with nice head and lacing. Weak aroma of nuts and metal. The flavor in this one had some caramel malts and significant nuttiness, some dark fruits and earth and a faint sweetness and an herbal hop twang. Not overly flavorful and maybe a little thin. Creamy feel on the tongue and just a slight warming burn made this an enjoyable, if unspectacular brew. I’d drink it again if offered to me, but probably wouldn’t seek it out.
1.9 Pretty mediocre. Poured a thin brown color with little head. Smell was slightly caramel, but nothing to strong. Flavor was flat and boring. A bit malty and a bit sweet, but not much going on with this one.
2.2 Sweet beery smell. Appearance is cross between rootbeer and dark ginger ale. Taste is rather alky. Malty and strong, too! Finish is medicine linger. Nice label on this bottle, I heart sunsets and sunrises. Heheheh.
3.4 a dark brown beer with a large creamy beige head. a sweet caramel, brown sugar aroma with some bitter fruits. the flavor consists of nuts, brown sugar, toast, and bitter hops. creamy palate with low carbonation. fairly dry in the finish.
