2.7 500ml bottle (motorway service station between Dusseldorf and Olpe) Has the same pale lagery aroma that previous kolsches have had, but this has way more fruity esters. Ditto in the taste. Palate a little thin, carbonation high. Finish bready, estery, some slightly extracty hops. Yup, this is a style that’s best fresh and close to the source.
3.1 Keg at Piccadilly Tap, Manchester. Clear golden shade. Patches of white head atop. Aroma and taste consist of lemon, honey and breadiness. There is however a slight chemical note which detracts from both. Decent enough even if I’m not a huge fan of this style.
2.5 Bottle. Bready aroma with some floral notes. On the palate it is sweet, but I pick up cardboard (slightly oxidized).
3.1 It’s been a while since I’ve had a Kölsch, and I hope I can find it on the site. The very stylized calligraphy on the bottle makes it difficult to tell if the first letter is a Z or a J and the fourth letter may be an F or an S. Anywhat - Nice pour, a clear golden yellow body with a creamy white head. The aroma is light grasses over a softly sweet graininess, which pretty much describes the flavor as well. Light and refreshing, this would be dandy to drink in much warmer weather than what I’m experiencing now.
2.7 Decent drinkability and light German hops. Pours golden with OK head and lacing. Finishes with a touch of hops and some sweet malt. Easy drankin. Bottle I bought to drink with non craft beer enthusiasts.
2.7 Golden clear colour with a thin white head. Aroma is sweet malts and light herbal and fruity notes. Taste is fresh, sweet cereal as lightly honey. Light hop touch. Light body. Dry finish. Easy to drink.
3.1 (Zunft Kölsch) Bottle 500 ml at home, served into a kolsch glass, ABV 4.8% Golden yellow colour on the body, small frothy white head, with okay retention, light lacing on the glass. Sweet but refreshing aroma, fresh grass and a bit of lemon. Taste also has lemon notes, malts, straw. Thin body, average carbonation. Overall okay, good thirst quencher.
2.6 500 ml bottle. Pours a golden colour with large bubbles. Aroma of grains, some wet wort, dough and grass. Flavour of grainy malts, grass, harsh bready notes, some paper and mild bitterness. Light bodied and hard carbonation. BBE in two months, so this isn’t as fresh as it should be.
3.7 This is a damn decent Koelsch, I must say, very Pilsner-ish. It is golden in color w/ a small head of fine bubbles. It’s nose is all fresh, herbal hops with some doughy maltiness around the edges. This is a very light and drinkable beer. It’s light sweetness brings out some floral notes from the hops and maybe a touch of fruitiness from the yeast. I kind of wish the carbonation was just a little more crisp on this one but it is a really nice beer all around.
2.7 Bottle @ Home. Pours light golden with a white head. Aroma of malt, grain, grass. Flavor is light sweet, malty, bread, grass, light dusty. Thin to medium body, lively carbonation. 300914
2.3 Aroma of grains, hay, corn, sweet malts. Flavour is light to medium malty sweetness. A bit dull.
3.0 Bottle: The aroma consists of light honey, sweet grain, and a touch of grass/straw. It pours a transparent gold with a creamy here finger white head that has good retention before eventually fading to a thin film. There is a good amount of soap webbing left on the sides of the glass. The flavor starts with a quick dose of light honey. The finish has light sweet grain and lighter grass. It’s light bodied with light-moderate carbonation. Overall, it’s an okay lawnmower beer...nothing exciting...nothing offensive.
2.2 Draught at 18. Internationales Berliner Bierfestival. Pale yellow beer with a decent white head. Malty bready aroma, grassy hops, caramel, hay, some cereal notes. Malty bready flavor, plastic notes, a bit artificial.
3.2 50CL bottle at home, yellow golden beer with a small head, aroma is neutral, taste is light sweet/bitter nice one!
2.9 500 ml bottle. Pours a clear yellow with an average, frothy, long lasting, off-white head that laces nicely. Sweet aroma of fruit and malts. Sweet flavour of fruit, malts and hops leading to a dry finish. Medium body with a watery texture and soft carbonation.
2.6 Keg Holborn Whippet London 27/05/14. A lager gold coloured beer with an off-white head. A bit of puke and a bit of hop. Hints of metal. A lager with flavour but not all of them good and actually there’s a bit of corn.
3.2 Bottle. Pours a very clear, straw pale yellow color, minimal white head. Sweet, grainy aroma, some faint notes of skunkage, no notable hop aroma. Crisp sweet malt character followed by mild hop bitterness. Fairly robust, almost wheaty flavor.
2.7 Pours a clear light yellow with a fairly small dense white head. The smell is light grain, grass and mild fruit. The taste is quite dry which balances with the light malt and fruit flavors. There is a hint of metallic flavor and a very crisp dry ending. Light in body with active carbonation that is a little prickly.
2.6 Goldgelbes Bier mit schöner Schaumkrone. Geruch malzig, getreidig, hopfig. Geschmack malzig, blumig, leichte Bitterkeit.
3.1 on tap @Lagerhaus-white-pale yellow. A-sweet grain. T-grain, slight hops. 3.1
3.1 Bottle. Pours a clear golden color with a moderate white head on it. Nose is grassy and corn-filled, and reminds me a lot of a more fragrant lager. Taste is light and crisp, and refreshing like a good lager can be. OK, but nothing remarkable overall.
2.6 The beer starts mild and smooth, but less aroma than the Erzquell-Pils from the same brewery. The smoothness is the same, so the harsh and sharp bitter ending, which is a lot smoother here at the less aromatic Kölsch. Easy drinkable, slightly sweet. Not much aroma. Typical Kölsch, but I don’t like the shark bitter ending. It tastes a bit cheap… --> 8/12/8/8
4.3 Slight grainy aroma and corn. Pale to gold color. Sips dry and effervescent. Subtle sweetness from malt and moderate bitterness to balance leaning towards a dry bitter finish. Leaves the tongue slightly numb and wanting a second sip. Very refreshing.
3.5 Honestly, I’ve been thinking it isn’t quite fair for us in the States to review the Euro brewed beers. They’ll never arrive in their freshest state and who knows what light, heat, etc. they experience on the trip from brewery to my glass. Anyway...I poured from the bottle in traditional Cologne form into a traditional stange to give it every chance possible to shine. Decent head but not a trace of lace. Aroma fell flat. Color was a decent straw, light golden hue. Taste was average. Sames goes for palate and mouthfeel. No lingering aftertaste. Overall pretty average. I won’t go out of my way for it but I wouldn’t pass if someone offered me one. I suspect that it is much better served locally, enjoying in a German cafe.
3.3 Pale body, small white head. Biter, herbal aroma. taste is grass, citrus. dry finish. Refreshing.
2.9 Poured two fingers of head on a clear, golden colored body. The aroma has a clean grain smell with just a touch metallic. The taste is lacking body. Watery and grainy with a little malt sweet. The texture is crisp with moderate carbonation. The less than good flavor really brings this beer down.
3.2 Pale golden color with thin white head. Grassy aroma . Taste is bittersweet , malty , hops and fruity.
3.5 Rating from yesterday. 16.9 oz bottle. I realized the other day that I’ve never had an authentic German Kolsch, only American versions, so I had to get this, even though I’m not a fan of the style really at all. Pours mostly clear golden with a large-ish fluffy white head. Smells like hay, unripe berries. Taste is sweet and grassy with faint bitterness; very dry. Not bad for what it is.
3.0 Draught @ BBF13. Pours clear pale golden with small white head. Clear aroma of hops and yeast with a distinct note of paper. Sweetish, estery flavour with touches of hops and a clear paperlike finish. Not bad, just anonymous and rather standardlike.
2.5 Decent clean crisp refreshing kolsch. Great for summer. Lemony, slightly pungent
